We talk about what sensory processing really means, how parents can recognize differences, and why shifting from “disorder” to “differences” matters for kids’ self-esteem and support. Laura shares her own parenting experiences as a neurodivergent mom raising a neurodivergent child, and we break down myths that leave parents feeling judged or confused.
We cover:
- What sensory processing is and how it shapes daily life for kids
- The difference between typical toddler behavior and sensory differences
- Red flags that suggest a child might need more support
- The “sensory cup” analogy for understanding overstimulation and meltdowns
- Why discipline doesn’t fix sensory needs, and what actually helps
- Practical ways parents can validate, regulate, and advocate for their kids

Walking into the formula aisle can feel like a pop quiz you never studied for. So many cans, so many claims. The truth? There’s no one “perfect” formula. What matters most is finding the option that keeps your baby fed, growing, and comfortable. In part two of my Formula Series, I break down the different types of formula, what’s marketing vs. what actually matters, and how to make the best choice for your baby (and your peace of mind). Subscribe so you don’t miss part three - how to safely prepare and store formula.

To be honest--it's all marketing: Authoritative parenting with different flavors.
Here’s the thing: most parents just want to know… what actually works?
Decades of research point to one clear answer: authoritative parenting. High warmth + high expectations. Connection + boundaries.
The trouble is, the buzzwords often get twisted:
✔️ Gentle gets read as “never say no”
✔️ FAFO turns into “make them pay”
✔️ Attachment sounds like “never put your baby down”
✔️ Positive gets confused with with positive all the time
But here’s the good news - when done right, each of these can actually fall under the authoritative umbrella. The problem isn’t the style itself, it’s when we cling too tightly to the label and drift away from the balance kids really need. The problem is many do not know what the styles even mean and drift out of authoritative parenting benefits.
Parenting doesn’t have to feel like picking a “team.” Share this with a friend who’s tired of the style wars and just wants clarity.
Which parenting “style” has confused you the most?
And thank you to The Wall Street Journal for bringing awareness to this topic in their article, ‘Goodbye Gentle Parenting, Hello ‘F—Around and Find Out.’”
This clip from last year was just too cute not to share again! In it, I walk through simple, kid-friendly strategies that help reduce anxiety, build trust, and keep vaccine visits positive. You’ll learn:
✅ How to explain a shot without making it scarier
✅ Fun ways to practice at home
✅ Small choices that give kids control
✅ Comfort tricks that really work
Flu season is here again, and a little preparation can go a long way in making your child’s next flu shot quick, calm, and (almost) tear-free.

That’s why I sat down with Congressman Maxwell Frost, the youngest member of Congress and a voice for Gen Z leadership, to talk about where we go from here.
We dig into what it means to lead in such a polarized time, the dangers of politicizing health, and how younger generations can push for change. Congressman Frost opens up about his perspective on the vaccine mandate debate in Florida, the role of misinformation, and why community and courage matter more than ever.
We cover:
- How public health became politicized—and why that’s so dangerous
- The impact of Covid-19 on trust in science and communication missteps we can learn from
- The real stakes of rolling back vaccine mandates in states like Florida
Why Gen Z’s voice and skepticism can be a strength in leadership
- How grassroots advocacy, calls, and community action can still influence policy
- Congressman Frost’s perspective on staying hopeful and grounded in the fight for public health and democracy

This press conference was hard to watch. Instead of facts, it elevated misinformation, sidelined scientific rigor, and painted autism as something that needs to be ‘reversed.’ That’s not just wrong—it’s stigmatizing. It felt reminiscent of how the LGBT community was once told their identity was a ‘crisis’ to be fixed.
Autism research matters. But what we know from decades of studies—and what we see clinically—is that autism is largely genetic. Yes, it’s multifactorial, but placing blame when evidence says otherwise is misinformation. Autism is not a public health crisis like opioids, which killed thousands. Autism is how a brain is wired.
The President said he was flanked by the ‘top medical and public health experts.’ In reality? Dr. Oz, Marty Makary, RFK Jr., and Dorothy Fink. Oz built his brand on daytime pseudoscience, Makary has minimized real public health crises, RFK Jr. is a leading anti-vaccine activist, and Fink is a political appointee—not a leader in autism research. That’s not the crème de la crème of evidence-based medicine.
And then hearing Marty Makary say that ‘seeing a kid with autism is brutal’? That’s stigma, not science. Autism is a spectrum. Raising a neurodiverse child isn’t easy, but what makes it hardest isn’t the child—it’s the lack of support.
As a pediatrician, what I want are sound answers—not a stream of consciousness, not fear, not a podium yelling ‘DON’T DO THIS.’ What we heard was: if you take Tylenol, you’re not tough enough, and if you do, ‘whoops—autism for your kid.’ That’s false, harmful, and stigmatizing.
In Florida, I see families waiting months for evaluations, fighting insurance cuts, and losing access as professionals leave the field from low pay and rhetoric like this. Parents don’t need more shame from a podium. They need resources, honesty, and respect.”
Check out the PedsDocTalk YouTube channel for my deeper dive where I separate the scary headlines from the actual evidence—something every parent should see before stressing over Tylenol or vitamins.
– Why reflux meds don’t always fix feeding issues
– How body tension can make feeding harder
– The surprising ways our stress affects our babies
– How craniosacral therapy can support better feeding
– And most importantly, how to find joy in feeding again
Whether your baby arches, spits up, refuses bottles, or just won’t relax, you’re not alone and there is support. Search “PedsDocTalk Podcast reflux remedies” wherever you get your podcasts to hear the full conversation.

In this episode, I sit down with my longtime friend and child passenger safety technician, Michelle Pratt from Safe in the Seat, to talk about the most common car seat mistakes parents make and how to fix them. We both share our own missteps (yes, even as a pediatrician and as a safety expert!) and the lessons that changed how we buckle our kids in.
We cover:
Why “winging it” with installation is risky, and how to practice before you leave the hospital
Chest clip placement, shoulder strap positioning, and the “one-inch rule” every parent should know
Rear-facing myths, what age to turn forward, and why “rear until 2” isn’t the full story
The truth about aftermarket products (like those head straps) and why they can be dangerous
How to empower kids to notice and speak up about their own car seat safety

What’s happening in Florida isn’t just about Florida. Rolling back school vaccine mandates doesn’t just affect one state-it sets the stage for outbreaks that travel across communities and borders. Especially concerning in Florida, one of the top travel destinations in the U.S.
Here’s what we now know: starting 90 days after the Sept. 3 announcement, immunization requirements will be removed for hepatitis B, chickenpox, Hib, and pneumococcal vaccines. Other vaccines-including polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, and rubella-will remain for now, unless changed through legislation.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by this, you’re not alone. But you can make your voice heard.
What can families and advocates do right now?
✔️Stay informed: Laws like this move fast. Check out my newsletter archive (link in bio) for a deeper dive on what this means for every family and honest answers to common concerns.
✔️Add your voice: Physicians can sign the open letter urging Florida to protect school vaccine requirements. Parents and community members can also call or email their local legislators to demand that school vaccine protections stay in place.
✔️Talk about it: Misinformation spreads in silence. Share accurate information with friends, school boards, and local groups.
✔️Support your pediatric community: Doctors, nurses, and hospitals will feel the fallout first. Standing with them matters.
School mandates protect all kids-those with cancer, newborns, pregnant teachers, grandparents, and yes, even kids whose parents delay or refuse vaccines. When the fence of herd immunity breaks, we all pay the price.
Follow @pedsdoctalk for more and share this video so parents and doctors understand what’s at stake.
We cover:
✅ How burnout is different from normal parenting fatigue
✅ Subtle signs of emotional exhaustion you might miss
✅ Why women and moms are more at risk
✅ What real healing looks like (hint: it’s not just a vacation)
This conversation is validating, relatable, and a reminder you’re not alone—and you don’t have to keep pushing through silently.
Listen to the full episode anywhere you get your podcasts for an honest look at what burnout really is and how to start recovering.

I’m joined by returning guest Alyssa Campbell, a child development expert, to provide the right tools for when emotions can feel overwhelming. We’ll talk about how age bias often shapes the way adults respond to older kids’ emotions, why yelling or punishment backfires, and how collaborative emotional processing can help kids feel understood while still respecting boundaries.
You’ll learn:
- Why defiance is often a sign of unmet needs, not disrespect
- The role of age bias in how we label behavior in older vs. younger kids
- How collaborative emotional processing helps kids regulate big emotions
- Practical, evidence-based ways to respond to meltdowns, worry, and pushback using her “F.A.C.T.S.” method
- How to raise kids who feel both confident and connected

➡️Saline-Drops, sprays, nasal mist are the GOAT of cough and cold remedies. Lubrciated nasal passes and airways are less irritated and can clear viral particles quicker and some studies even show less viral replication.
➡️ Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are used for discomfort. Being sick even with a cough and cold hurts. So if febrile and cranky and inconsolable OR even just cranky with a cold, give them medication. Just don't go overboard from package recommendations.
➡️ Aspirin isn’t recommended for kids because it’s linked to Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition that can cause liver and brain swelling, especially when given during viral illnesses like flu or chickenpox. For pain or fever, acetaminophen or ibuprofen are safer options. Remember that there are some medical conditions aspirin is used--but this is more for routine cough and cold pain relief.
➡️ Nasal frida is 50/50 for me because I personally got sick while using it. I have trust issues with the filter. Some people swear by it, so use it if it works for you just chill a bit on suctioning. They only need it if they're uncomfortable and saline drops or spray aren't helping.
➡️ Hate to break it to you-Vitamin C supplements don't do anything. Catch my YouTube video about immune supplements by searching my channel.
➡️ I'm a humidifier fan when the air is dry. Use on a case by case basis as it may help kids moisten their room and airways minimizing cough.
➡️ Don't stick hydrogen peroxide up any nostrils to clear viruses. It destroys the good stuff that fights viruses too!
➡️ Step away from leftover antibiotics or antibiotics from a friend. Please.
➡️ Honey and golden milk for LIFE (for kids over one)
➡️ Cough syrups are risky for kids under 6 and even for older kids, honey has actually been proven to do more. The GOAT IMO is golden milk.
➡️ Boogie wipes are not glorified tissues. They have saline on them and are less irritating to sensitive noses.
Here’s what we actually know:
✔️ Autism isn’t caused by one pill, vitamin, or skipped prenatal
✔️ Tylenol is still the safest option for pain/fever in pregnancy
✔️ Folate prevents neural tube defects, not autism
❌ Fear sells but it misleads and blames women
In my full YouTube video, I break down the studies, folate myths, the 2025 review, and why political headlines fuel fear more than facts.

As a pediatrician and mom in this state for the last 8 years, this one hit me hard.
What I wanted to get across was simple:
➡️This decision hurts public health.
➡️Herd immunity is what keeps babies, kids with weak immune systems, and whole classrooms safe.
➡️We need to call our Florida legislators and make sure this doesn’t become reality.
Taking away mandates for the vaccines on our routine childhood schedule doesn’t create freedom, it takes away protection.
✅How to reach your Florida legislators
✅A short script to use when calling
✅A sample email you can send to your child’s school to help them advocate too
✅And why this impacts all of us-not just Floridians
Public health shouldn’t be a political fight. It should be about keeping kids safe.
Did they eat enough? Too much screen time? Nap off by 10 minutes? Milestones not “advanced”? It’s exhausting, and it can make us miss the bigger picture.
This clip from my a previous podcast introduces my “Zoom Out Parenting” mindset - a way to step back from moment-to-moment panic and focus on what truly matters over time. You’ll hear how tracking every detail can backfire, how to break the guilt loop, and how to stop perfectionism from hijacking your day.
The takeaway? One pouch doesn’t define their nutrition. A skipped nap isn’t the end of the world. Parenting is about patterns, not perfection.

✔️ Alcohol changes breast milk taste, which can affect feeding
✔️ Alcohol passes into milk - if you feel tipsy, wait at least 2 hours before feeding
✔️ “Pumping and dumping” doesn’t clear alcohol faster—only time does
Keep baby safe by waiting until alcohol is fully out of your system before nursing again. 💕

In this episode, I’m joined by pediatrician and author Dr. Natasha Burgert, who just released Managing Childhood Anxiety For Dummies. We talk about how anxiety can look different in kids, when parents should reach out for help, and the many supportive steps families can take before medication is even on the table.
We cover:
- The many faces of anxiety in children (it’s often a chameleon)
- How to talk to your child about anxiety without making it scarier
- Why early screening matters and what those forms really mean (spoiler: not a label)
- Common myths about medication and how SSRIs actually work
- How school transitions (hello, September stomachaches) can trigger anxiety

In this clip from my PedsDocTalk Podcast episode with pediatric allergist Dr. Dave Stukus, we break down:
– Why broad or early testing can backfire
– How false positives are especially common in kids with eczema
– Why food sensitivity tests (IgG) don’t diagnose allergies
– How to advocate for evidence-based allergy care for your child
If you’ve ever been told to “just do a panel” or felt confused by allergy test results, this will help you navigate the process with confidence.
