REVIEW1) I really do not like the price on this one and I don't know why I paid it. For the art? Maybe. But there are better ways to collect art. Seriously. 2) The back of the cards contain the title of the deck, overlaid on what I think is a copy of one of the cards (?). This format is one of my least favourite ones in all the universe.3) The container is very spartan. I don't care if you think tarot is always only about the cards. Not for the price I've paid for it, it isn't. 4) Poker size so a bit small, but5) Professional grade card-stock: Very good to shuffle with in any way you want.6) The art is the best part of it: Very compelling as a very creative take on tarot. (A set of major arcana beyond the classic 22). Reminds me of Mantegna's 50 cards.7) To some, or most, this would veer off into the territory of an "oracle". (Technically tarot is a form of oracle. In this sense, this is the type of tarot where we utilise the stories behind the images on the cards. It is therefore most useful, in my opinion, for contemplative exercises.—This is NOT a flip through, NOT a walk through. Even if the majority is rooted in the Western world, enough variety was included to make me, someone who do not often identify too strongly with one specific tradition, but can feel acutely when left on the outside looking in, feel included. The messages in the guidebook only occasionally feel "fortune-telly" to me, which is fine, but not for me.Thankfully, enough was more straight forward stories of the the uses and symbols of each plant and the material objects around them, and how they relate to the RWS approach to tarot. Leaving us, as adults, to tie in the final knot of conclusions. Which I appreciate.TWO THUMBS UP FROM ME. Yes. I've been a fan of both Beehive Books and Kevin independently prior to this.I FORGOT TO MENTION ---(1) How the box (not the tin) is designed in such a way where the flying dandelion seeds are all connected from one panel to another across the corners of the box. It is little details like this that is a mark of a good design. And how the gold on black of the outside is mirrored by the black on gold of the inside. Which in turns, the mirror the back of the cards, which are gold and black. This back and forth is just so subtle that it is DELICIOUS. The unison was so complete that I did not even notice the slightly off centre printings on the panels. (2)How the main design consist of dandelions, and how this is the FOOL in the deck. The start and end of all journeys. POETIC!(3)From my personal experience, great designs are always typified by one thing in common: How they do NOT include certain things. That is to say that great designs can often be seen from what they are able to do WITHOUT, rather than with. Beehive Books have managed exactly that.Also:(4) This is not a book review so I did not scrutinise the binding.(5) I don't use spreads, and I read "free flow" style which means I do not read "positionally"(6) I don't believe in "meaning" of a card or cards(7) I do NOT use tarot for divination. In Memoriam: Il Meneghello’s Boxes + Tarocco Soprafino, Tarot de Besancon, Tarocco di Marsiglia O_O 2021-05-10 | 10 MAY 2021 --- Three older, vintage, handmade one of a kind boxes by Osvaldo Menegazzi of Il Meneghello. The Maestro has since retired (In 2017?) and Il Meneghello rebranded under its new management headed by his step daughter Christina Dorsini. It has since also relocated from its former magical location to be consistent with its new business model, moving from the man, the maestro, to the brand itself. This is a closer look at some of the historical facsimile collection which I still have in the house (I am liquidating my collection in stages. These will be the last to go). Specifically the boxes. I have gone through the cards themselves a few years ago. Feel free to check out my historical facsimile playlist if you are more interested in those.NOTEThe Hanged man in Swiss tarot, and Besancon tarot, often depicted wearing an outfit which belong to a much later period compared to other decks published earlier such as those we calle Tarot de Marseille. Although a lot of these Swiss and Besancon tarot dated back to the 1800s (or even the 1700s), my observation suggests that the style of the clothing of the Hanged Man is from several centuries earlier. This is often the case with other decks too, that the outfit depicted in the images are often from several hundred years earlier than when a deck was published.--------My Tarot Collection LiquidationINSTAGRAM @MyCollectionForSaleLiquidation phase 1 completed. Ladybird and I are showing you a handmade set of trumps of the Tarot Jacques Vieville from 17th century Paris, by Sullivan Hismans at Tarot Sheet Revival in 2019 (Belgium / Canada). Although the cards are made of what feels like art paper, the cards slides off each other easily, and deliciously. I think I ordered and received this in 2020. I already have two sets of historically accurate facsimiles of these cards, so in this custom ordered set, I seek refreshing new colour twists to be incorporated for as much as the creator is comfortable with them.WHAT I LIKEEverythingWHAT I DON'T LIKENothing(It is custom ordered, so of course I like everything about it. 🌷REVIEW: Italian Renaissance Woodcut Tarocchi (Robert M Place, USA, 2015?) aka Budapest Tarot. O_O 2021-05-03 | 3 MAY 2021 - WHY SO EXPENSIVE?? I can highly recommend purchasing from Jean Claude Flornoy or Sullivan Hismans (Tarot Sheet Revival) instead.These cards by RM Place (USA) are based on the OLDEST tarocchi FOUND to date. (NOT the oldest CREATED. We can’t know that). Some of us know these images from Sullivan Hismans of Tarot Sheet Revival and his "Budapest Tarot" named after the collection at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. Robert Place's also took his image sources from the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, and the Met in NYC. There are other copies of this tarot in the Cary Yale collection as well as in private collection(s) the last time I checked, one of which held the actual stencil used to colour the original. I bought this from Robert Place several years ago, can't remember when.I always respect Robert Place for his hustle. From never failing to keep tabs on trends, to removing the most important part in an extra thick book filled with historical facts, the index section, so he can maximize international purchases by limiting postal costs, to renaming decks like this to limit competitions and comparisons to better produced decks from the same origin, to artificially limiting supply to maximize profit as you can see here, while at the same time minimising taxing work by printing instead of hand drawing or applying colours by stencils. I could go on.But I’ve got to say my patience and understanding were sorely tested as I purchase this copy. —COMPARE TO JEAN CLAUDE FLORNOY (FRANCE)Contrast the prices of Flornoy's hand stencilled Jean Dodal and Jean Noblet which are EUR 42 and EUR 38 respectively plus shipping. They are some of the best made and best price tarot facsimiles and redrawing which you can find in the market at the time of this video. I can highly recommend them. We will take a closer look at these Flornoys in a separate video/s.COMPARE TO SULLIVAN HISMANS /TAROT SHEET REVIVAL (BELGIUM)In terms of exclusivity, check out Sullivan’s work especially his hand painted and hand made reproduction copies. This particular recreation, with this lines and colours, I believe is uniquely his, and would under most copyright laws, belong to RM Place, instead of history.2) Hard to shuffleLike all non laminated art or water colour papers, they were not made to slide against each other. In the old tradition, cartier will rub a bar of soap on each surface to facilitate sliding and reduce friction. But with our modern business model, where time is money, this is most probably deemed too time consuming, except by a handful of cartiers that I know of, all of whom I highly respect because of their dedication to the old tradition. They are scattered across Belgium, France, and Argentina. No one I know in the USA does it.3) The term "facsimile"Unless I misunderstood the term, this is misleading. 🌷The Tarot of Austin Osman Spare c.1906; The Lost Envoy, 2016; J. Allen (Ed.) FATHER OF CHAOS MAGIC O_O 2021-04-24 | Austin Osman Spare was a UK based artist and the Father of Chaos Magic. [This video is about the cards, in the book. Not the book]. It is by mere historical accident, I think, that the RWS instead of the AOS became the most popular foundation of modern tarot in the English speaking world. If only AOS was as focused about the commercialisation of his tarot, as Waite was, we would probably all be starting learning the tarot with the AOS, instead the RWS.If you look at his cards, images flow from one card into another, not unlike the method often used in cartomancy methods such as lernomand, sybilla, and kipper. In a more taromancy sphere, you can look at how Enrique Enriquez use his cards. (He has given up tarot but his methods remain a classic). Which has been a great inspiration to me. I used tarot cards this way myself, where I read strings of images, instead of image by image. I will revisit the book in a separate video. His Earliest Tarot: Le Conchiglie Divinatorie di Osvaldo Menegazzi (Il Meneghello, 1975) O_O 2021-04-22 | RIP DEC 2021 💔Number 1198 out of 1500. Milan, Italy, 1975. Major arcana only. All of his tarot original art have been majors only. The IL MATTO here is a self portrait. Maestro Menegazzi never learned how to read the tarot. I found those tend to be the ones to create the most interesting tarot. In 2015 he slowly passed on the reign of his Magic Shop to his step daughter, Christina Dorsini. (In his Tarocchi Expo Milano 2015 you could see some cards signed by Christina Dorsini, instead of Osvaldo Menegazzi). Soon after, they rebranded, the magic shop turned into a boutique, and moved to a fancier side of Milan. I have no idea what happened to his work space, and if still in the shop, how he access it since he lived further away from the shop now. (The old shop was closer to where he resided and where his social circles are/were). My own father was an architect, and I know he needed his creative space to be close and immediate, as well as accessible at all times, because creative flows know no time, or schedules. Is this "cultural appropriation"..? Context does not only matter. Context is everything. PLEASE NOTE: This is just a casual ramble, and a think out loud.CULTURAL APPROPRIATION, APPRECIATION, & SEGREGATION"Cultural appropriation" is a term people use a lot these days. I often wonder if we know what it actually means. It appears to me, that many seemed to have used it without the desire to interview the cultural actors concerned. Having said that, these cultural actors are no monolith. So I understand the complications. As many in South East Asia, and I am sure elsewhere in the world, my ancestry is a product of the amalgamation of several cultures. I always find myself wondering, if my Chinese and Javanese ancestors would have been forced to stick to a bi-cultural format, if they were alive today, instead of giving birth to the wonderful hybrid culture known as the "Peranakan" culture. I am now living in New Zealand, and consider myself a Kiwi. The Maori cultural artefacts such as a traditionally carved pounamu (New Zealand green stone) pendant is something that I and many others like me consider a privilege to be able to don. An outward expression of not only that we have embraced New Zealand as our home, but most importantly, that New Zealand has embraced us back. Our internationally renown national rugby team, The All Blacks, have always opened every game with a Maori "haka" (Please feel free to google that). It is not sufficient to accuse "cultural appropriation" based on the adoption of the cultural artefacts of one group by another. Especially, when skin colours are used as proxies for these cultural markers. Culture is in the head, not on the skin. Culture is a set of belief systems, not a set of melanin. 🌷Tarocchi di Bacchus (Giordano Berti, Luigi Scapini, Giulia Scapini, 2006) O_O 2020-08-03 | AUGUST 2020 -- Maybe the title of this tarocchi is a play on the very well known "Bacchus Tarot", also known as the Flemish Tarot, or the Vandenborre Tarot (c. 1780s). Or maybe not. Who knows. It is an interesting thought, you've got to admit. The majors is based on Greek and Roman mythology centred around Bacchus (Greek: Dionysus) the God of Wine. The minors are very lively, but felt a bit random and came across very much like a series of after thoughts. Because of the dynamic illustrations, the minors are friendly to "intuitive reading", or, if you use tarot for the images only. While the majors are very much "reading the stories behind the images on the cards". Used together, they can feel a bit out of sync with each other. Separately, they can be delightful. BUT! The minors requires that you can pretend to be a bit tone deaf about potentially some out-dated stereotypes lurking in the stories being told. Pretending not to see and not to hear have been part of my personal survival mechanisms, which is not necessarily a good thing. So I hereby walk you through this one with this cautionary footnote. (PS: A deck which was published a decade after this one still managed to show general stereotyping, and it remains widely popular and generally supported, as of today AUGUST 2020. No revision, update, and reprinting is currently in sight. It has been said that before Gertrude Moakley passed away, she expressed her desire for her work to be republished with added materials. Her wish never came to fuition.Gertrude Moakley was the first to approach tarot study in a manner which made her potentially the first tarot historian ever published in the 20th century. She is a pioneer in studying the tarot in terms of its history and iconography. She was the first to associate the trumps in tarot with Petrach's triumphal processions, as well as the first to propose that "The Popess" is in fact Sister Manfreda (Maifreda) of the Visconti family. --This area of interest remains today reliant on tarot history enthusiasts, rather than historians per se, with the only historians I know of which discusses tarot being Thierry Depaulis, and Michael Dummet. (Wikipedia)WHAT I AM NOT HERE TO DOThis is NOT a review, or a walkthrough. I am NOT here to convince you that this is a "good" tarot deck. I don't really care to alter what you think of it. In fact, I don't really care what you think of it at all. I am also NOT here to help you make these cards work for you. No one can, ever. WHAT I AM HERE TO DOWhat I am here to do, in my own way, is to attempt to share an eye witness testimony of my time in tarot, when I first came into it in mid-2014, and what the tarot scene was like back then (It was only 6 years ago!) in relation to The Wild Unknown Tarot. There was the tarot scene before TWU, and then there was the tarot scene after. Its trailblazer status was predicated by the fact that it received a lot of backlash when it first came out in 2012, and by the time I came into the scene in 2014 this "reaction" was still pretty strong. I was an outsider in tarot (still am I think), who considered (still do) herself part of the "mainstream" (ironically, I am often in the fringes of this so called mainstream). So witnessing the level of upsets was a bit puzzling. Nevertheless, this backlash was very visible and apparent to me. You often know when something is breaking boundaries from the degree of push back it receives. (Whether this boundary breaking is productive or not, for the better or not, is an entirely different conversation).THE FACTS AS I REMEMBER THEMThe TWU received some major pushbacks in terms of the following arguments at the time (and perhaps still now) -(1) That it made tarot "mainstream"(2) That it "dilutes" tarot(3) That it made tarot "fashionable" (Out in the open, common, trivial)Specific events which were often raised as cases in points for the above arguments were -(1) How it was distributed through "mainstream" distribution points (e.g. Urban Outfitters in the USA)(2) How it has became "The Hipsters' Tarot". (See point 3 above)(For perspective, the above "objections" are now the rule of the game for indie tarots everywhere).Milestones in relation to being the first (and / or one of the first few) in the "operational" English speaking tarot genre (mainly centred in the USA) -(1) Independently published (The first of a few. Was it the first?)(2) The matte shufle-able lamination(3) The thickness of the cardstock which is thicker than "normal" at the time(4) The production value over all: Of particular notice was the box and how it was packaged overall such as the premium quality sturdy "ribbon lifter" (Closer to the Italian art editions of Il Meneghello who have been producing indie decks since the 1970s)(5) Going mass market through a "mainstream" publishing house Harper Collins (Instead of "speciality" ones such as Weiser or Schiffer). (6) Mass market edition has a production value which equalled its original indie version (Aside for the slightly thinner cardstock, perhaps to allow for comfortable riffle shuffling and therefore maximising their market base. Here you can see a facsimile of the original two tarot decks from 1926 and 1889, and the original book by Oswald Wirth. There are a lot of reproduction of this set out there. This set is one of the best by far I my personal opinion. (Mainly for the reproduction quality and the inclusion of the book, and how the whole package has been presented). Produced in France, based on original museum copies in Belgium. This edition is priced at EUR 186 plus shipping at the time of this video. Initially translated to French by Galland (1700s), Sinbad the Sailor was never a part of the "One Thousand Nights and One Night" (Alf Layla Wa Layla) manuscript, but part of one which has since become lost to time. Galland's subsequent project was the One Thousand and One Night, and it became the the foundation of its various translations across Europe in the 1700s. The other two most popular Arabian Nights stories, Aladdin and Ali Baba, were also never part of the original cycle, but were a result of publisher's and market demand for more after the original One Thousand and One Nights, and were stories told to Galland by a Meronite Syrian Christian woman named Hana Daib. According to surviving records, Galland embellished the stories with his own. It is not until the 1800s that another person seek to once again translate directly from original sources. Galland's main source was a four volume Syrian manuscript. Later translations (such as the one you see here by Sir Richard Burton) often incorporated other sources, such as the Vulgate text (Bulaq), and the Kolkata (Calcutta) text, both Arabic from the 1800s. But that's a topic for our next video(s), as I walk you through more books and the translation story of one of the most influential narrative cycles in human history 😊 This is an older version by Easton Press from 2000. Today is March 2020, so the book is 20 years old. The leather binding is good, but not the best I have handled and seen. It reminds me of the work of an average re-binder. The edges of the page are gilded with gold, and the book has one gold ribbon marker of sufficient width and length. (It could always be wider and longer for my own personal taste). Their image reproduction is rather average, and not the best I have seen. Here is to 2020 and all of its priorities.********The Everyman's Library book ("The Talented Mr Ripley" + "Ripley Under Ground" + "Ripley's Game") is in used condition, sure. BUT, it was shipped in a single layer plastic bag that you see at the end of this video. ** No padding. No box. ** As a result, the corners are badly battered, as you can also see here :( I bought this one for less than US $2, but after shipping from the US to NZ plus exchange rates, this book costed me NZD $45 and I am not very happy about how badly damaged the corners are due to improper packing. Because of the price point, I understand the lack of motivation on the seller's part beyond throwing the book into the sea to float directly across the planet to me (Which they practically did...!!). Still. It is rather painful to see such a beautiful book damaged so badly, and so unnecessarily. ----STAY TUNED FOR AMAZON PACKING FAILS! Perhaps because of my recent awareness of how doomed we are with the current rate of industrial plastic production).So I am returning to my usual tried and tested covers: Leather. [...].From the esteemed Italian publisher Franco Maria Ricci—who brought us Luigi Serafini's famed and mysterious Codex Seraphinianus in 1981—comes a remarkably beautiful discourse on the oldest Tarot card deck known: the 15th-century Visconti-Sforza.The Visconti-Sforza tarot deck had a significant impact on the visual composition, card numbering and interpretation of modern decks. The surviving cards are of particular historical interest because of the beauty and detail of the design, which was often executed in precious materials and often reproduce members of the Sforza and Visconti families in period garments and settings. Consequently, the cards also offer a glimpse of [life of the nobilities] in Milan, which the two families called home since the 13th century. When commissioned by Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, and by his successor Francesco Sforza, the cards were still known as Trionfi ("triumphs", i.e. trump) cards, and used for everyday playing. The text surrounding the faithful reproductions of the original cards is, in effect, a short novel by Italo Calvino, commissioned by renowned Italian publisher Franco Maria Ricci for this edition: it concerns a group of travellers who are struck dumb and can communicate their stories only through Tarot cards, recounted and described by a narrator. Millennium Trilogy Deluxe Box Set (Stieg Larsson; Knopf, 2010 [2001, 2008]) O_O 2019-06-28 | BOOKS ARE NOW ON MY OTHER CHANNEL @TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf ---- I bought this in 2011 and never really looked into the rest of the instalments, especially after I heard that his estate went to his closest living relative, instead of his long time partner (because she was never his wife) who not only knew him the best by that stage, but also his materials and his intentions with his remaining 7 books, of a total of 10 in the series (so not a total of 7 as I had initially thought here).The fourth instalment was actually published in 2015 written by David Lagercrantz, The Girl in The Spider's Web, followed by the fifth, The Girl Who Takes and Eye for an Eye in 2017. From what I understand, Larsson's staunchly feminists ideas have been appropriated and mangled unrecognizably into a money making venture by the ones with the legal rights over his estate, and so his manuscripts (His brother?). His long life partner whom he never married due to fear for her safety, is not a recognised family member under the law of his country. Needless to say, I will not be contributing my money to their venture. So for me, the series sadly ends here. 🌷The Pen Tarot (Penelope Cline, Fig Tree Press, 2008) O_O 2019-04-10 | "The Pen Tarot is the result of the development of a fascination with tarot that began with completion of The Mystic Rubáiyát,a set of meditation cards based on Edward Fitzgerald’s creative translation of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam. Having spent many years on this project, I felt ready to begin an artistically original tarot that featured the traditional archetypes, and so began a tarot centred around my magickal novel, The Golden Web. But, as sometimes happens, a drawing I made somewhat casually sparked more urgent inspiration, and set me on a completely different course. The Pen Tarot is the fruition of that inspiration and my new obsession, both artistic and historical, with All Things Tarot.The images for The Pen Tarot were mostly drawn from life and made with a Pilot 0.5 pen, followed by diluted ink applied with a brush. The colour was created with Caran D’Ashe aquarelle crayons. Texture, extra form where needed, and the black backgrounds on some cards were done digitally. [...]When The Pen Tarot was first conceived, I intended that the cards should be without titles or numbers and feature only the quotations, having some idea that I could choose quotations that contained the titles and so make these superfluous. However, having finished the images, the actual task of finding the words and combining image, quotation and title, whilst adding another dimension to the traditional tarot meanings, yielded results too concrete, far less subtle than seemed right. I’d imagined The Pen Tarot as a tarot of depth and hidden layers, one that would reveal its secrets gradually rather than state them outright, so the concept had to be rethought from the beginning. the choices I made were governed more by instinct than by the standard tarot meanings, and sometimes by the images themselves, images that at times seemed to fall fully formed from the pen. Some will be familiar to the reader, others less so. I’ve broadened the quotations in the little booklet that accompanies the deck to reveal perhaps more than should be revealed, making some less appropriate than they’d otherwise have been with only the words on the cards, but nevertheless feel that this was the right and only course to take, and that instinct is a sense one should learn to trust.The images are professionally printed on 350gsm silk card, 9cm x 14cm, unlaminated, and with a smaller line-only version of the little owl on the reverse. There are 24 cards in each set - the 22 archetypes of the major arcana plus the title card, which is signed and numbered on the back. There is one extra card - The Artist. "The creator of the deck, Dr Emil Kazanlar, inspired by his diverse family history, refers to the deck as being ecumenical, meaning universal. He comments on how an ecumenical attitude allows different religions to lead equally to God. In its staging and design, the film is symmetrical with Méliès's A Trip to the Moon: while the astronomers' progress toward the moon in that film is consistently depicted as left-to-right motion, the Institute of Incoherent Geography's progress toward the sun in The Impossible Voyage is consistently right-to-left. 🌷The Hermit in Tarot. Arcana IX. Major Mystery 9. PONDERING THE ARCANA 2019 O_O 2019-03-14 | MARCH 2019. Arcana. Mystery. This is my contemplation with Arcana IX. Mystery 9. The Hermit. Touching Base with My Hermit for March 2019. I use tarot images as means for self reflection to achieve insights. (Despite filing this under "Esoterica"). These images are psycho-poetic devices. Here we look at cards determined every year by the calculations commonly used in numerology, something I know very little about, but which basic calculation information can be widely found online. Based on this calculations, the number which came out for me for the year 2019 is 9. This number is assigned to "The Hermit" in the most popular convention of tarot or tarocchi images that we know today. Number assignments which are often determined by the succession of trumps in each game, is not universal. Based on the same system of numerology, number 9 is also associated with number 18 because 1+8=9. Number 18 in the current convention of trump succession is assigned to "The Moon". Veering into esoteric tarot for a bit, something I found fascinating, but have never really investigated too deeply into, I referred to the Golden Dawn discussions of The Hermit which include the images not only from the Golden Dawn Tarot, but also Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot of The Hermit, which discussed The Hermit in relation to "The Devil" as "Lord of the Gates of Matter" and "Death" as the ultimate transformation.
