I'll briefly explain shadow moves here as those have gotten overhauled in this game. Now there is a variety of shadow moves that Shadow Pokémon can have instead of just Shadow Rush. Shadow attacks will deal super effective damage to all non-Shadow Pokémon while dealing not very effective damage to other Shadow Pokémon. Reverse Mode also replaces Hyper Mode in this game which is just a straight downgrade since Reverse Mode only causes harm. The only good change is that going into Reverse Mode doesn't waste your turn since it only occurs at the end of the turn.
Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPec9Xp5SYixXgr36v0ZVBTWPokémon XD: Gale of Darkness - Shadow Teddiursa (Spy Naps)ThatOneGameBoy2026-09-21 | The first Shadow Pokémon of the game and it is a 100% guaranteed catch. The game won't let you do anything else except throw a ball at it. So, this battle is basically scripted. This is also technically your second "starter" Pokémon since every battle after this will be a double battle.
Teddiursa Lv. 11 Normal type, Ability: Pick Up -Shadow Blitz (Return) -Shadow Mist (Refresh) -Lick -Metal Claw
Not a bad first catch honestly. And even if you don't plan to use Teddiursa, you may as well keep it in the party for a while to use its Pick Up ability to get some free items. Once evolved into Ursaring at level 30, it will have Guts which is a great ability if you can activate it with your ally Pokémon. Eventually, you can get the TM for Facade which is an excellent attack to teach Ursaring. STAB + Guts + Facade's damage boost will one-shot anything that doesn't resist normal attacks. Ursaring is probably the strongest user of Facade in this game.
For postgame, Ursaring falls off due to its low speed. While Facade will blitz through a lot of opponents, you'll need some support such as a Follow Me user to keep Ursaring alive. Teddiursa also has the same issue Eevee does in that you can't fully EV train it because you are forced to use it for battles in the beginning of the game.
Just like with my Colosseum playthrough, I'll give my thoughts on the Shadow Pokémon you can snag in this game. I will also make a separate entry for postgame viability because XD has one of the most challenging postgames if you are not planning to transfer Pokémon in. If you plan to take on the full postgame of XD, then I recommend setting certain Pokémon aside to EV train later to get more of an edge.
Eevee Lv. 10 Normal type, Ability: Run Away -Tackle -Tail Whip -Bite -Sand-Attack
Getting a choice of Flareon, Jolteon, Vaporeon, Espeon and Umbreon in this game. Right off the bat, Flareon and Vaporeon are not that useful in this game. Flareon just kind of sucks. Vaporeon's problem is that it doesn't get access to Surf in this game which is a pretty important move to teach it. That alone makes it less useful in a game like this. Jolteon is good if you want a fast electric attacker that can also learn Thunder Wave. Espeon is a fast psychic attacker that can also support with Reflect and Light Screen. Umbreon is a tank that can eat hits and support the team. Something worth noting is that XD has a Move Relearner unlike Colosseum. This means the Eeveelutions can get Helping Hand which is a fantastic move in double battles. This makes a tanky support like Umbreon more useful.
For postgame, the Eeveelutions are sort of hard to bring in because you can't fully EV train them since you are forced to use Eevee for the first few battles in the game. While proper EV training is not necessarily required, it would help out a lot. Otherwise, some Eeveelutions can work out if you don't mind an awkward start and boxing it for later.

This guy has an interesting team that is made up of the Cipher Admins and Gonzap's replacement Pokémon for their Shadow Pokémon. Miror B's Armaldo, Dakim's Houndoom, Venus's Milotic, Ein's Manectric, and Gonzap's Gyarados. He is a mimic in more ways than one.
Togetic Lv. 20 Normal & Flying type, Ability: Serene Grace OR Hustle -Shadow Rush (Metronome) -Charm -Sweet Kiss -Yawn
Tied for the lowest level Shadow Pokémon in this game and it is the last Shadow Pokémon you can snag in the postgame. If you are willing to grind it up to use for Mt. Battle runs or something, then it is actually decent. It is probably the best Follow Me user since it has better defenses than Furret. Serene Grace can make it a useful attacker if you want to invest TMs on it. It can also learn a lot of support moves too. But since there's not much else to do in this game at this point, you're probably not going to use Togetic.

Gyarados would be replaced with Shadow Skarmory if you failed to snag it earlier. All of Gonzap's Pokémon have Hyper Beam and can buff with either Swords Dance or Bulk Up. The only exception is Gyarados which he'll use X Attacks on instead. And I guess Shadow Skarmory too but that's a Shadow Pokémon.
You get a lot of normal types in this game. A lot of them are pretty good with their own thing going for it. Ursaring is probably the strongest normal type if you have a way to activate Guts. Otherwise, go with something else.
Smeargle Lv. 45 Normal type, Ability: Own Tempo -Shadow Rush (Sketch) -Tail Whip -Doubleslap -Iron Tail
Smeargle can have any move with Sketch, but it might be really hard to get the desired moves in a game like this. Double battles are probably the easiest way to sketch moves from as most people will sketch the moves from their ally Pokémon. But since this game has a low number of Pokémon with limited move customization options, Smeargle is kind of garbage if you're not planning to transfer it to another game.

Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPfrACIt30HC-9aA0M66tSqNPokémon Colosseum - Cipher Head Evice (Final Boss)ThatOneGameBoy2026-09-05 | Suddenly, level 60 Pokémon. Okay. The main reason I brought Umbreon was to use Taunt on Slowking. Slowking has Skill Swap which it will use on Slaking. But due to trainers in this game randomly selecting their lead Pokémon, Evice did not start with the Slowking + Slaking combo. I was hoping to basically stall those two with Taunt and Protect and buff up with X items. I had to improvise and made this battle closer than it needed to. Protect also just makes you invincible against Slaking/Truant.
Also, I accidently executed a glitch in this video. Successfully snagging a Shadow Pokémon on the same turn the trainer switches out its other Pokémon causes the game to be confused. This led to Evice fighting with one Pokémon even though he had two left in his team. This is not a well-known glitch from what I can tell since the trainer AI rarely switches out their Pokémon, but Perish Song is like the one way to force the AI to switch. Even then, they sometimes won't switch during Perish Song. I was not intending to do this; I did not know this was a thing until now. But I'm glad I managed to get this during a recording.
Tyranitar Lv. 55 Item: Nugget Rock & Dark type, Ability: Sand Stream -Shadow Rush (Crunch) -Thunder -Rock Slide -Blizzard
Another fantastic Pokémon to use in the postgame. Rock Slide is an excellent spread move that gets STAB. Get Earthquake at level 61 to create a monster. Sand Stream is honestly kind of annoying here since the special defense boost to rock types is in Gen 4 onwards; not in this game. And there's not a lot of Pokémon that take advantage of the sandstorm in this game. And yes, it is holding a nugget for some reason.
Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPfrACIt30HC-9aA0M66tSqNPokémon Colosseum - Cipher NascourThatOneGameBoy2026-09-04 | The penultimate battle in the game doesn't play any battle music for some reason. Just crowd cheers which I guess is good ambience? Don't worry about the next battle, you'll be healed between fights. Something I will say that's kind of strange about this game is the level curve for the enemies. And not just for this point in the game, it was present for most of the game. For some reason, regular trainers are fairly low leveled while the bosses have a spike in levels. The regular trainers before Nascour were under level 50. Gonzap was above level 50. Nascour is around level 55. And the battle after this is level 60. That's one way to do a difficulty spike I suppose.
One of the best Pokémon in Gen 3. I would highly recommend using it for the postgame if you plan to do it. If you do plan to do the postgame, I hope you saved some of those really good one-time TMs for Metagross.

You do not get healed between battles (except for the last two), so bring items to recover when needed. I actually wasted time and items healing during this battle since you do get healed for the battle after this one.
Another one of those Chlorophyll + Solarbeam spammers in the strong sunlight. I'm confused as to why this is one of the final Shadow Pokémon in the main game. It sucks.

Houndoom Lv. 48 Dark & Fire type, Ability: Flash Fire OR Early Bird -Shadow Rush (Faint Attack) -Howl -Smog -Flamethrower
Once it learns Crunch at level 59, which is a tall order, it can cover pretty well with high offensive stats and a high speed stat. Using the Solarbeam TM on it can do well if you have a Sunny Day user on your team. A good alternative to Typhlosion.

Perish Song can be fun, but Misdreavus is slightly faster and has more immunities compared to Absol.

You do not get healed between battles (except for the last two), so bring items to recover when needed.
Miltank Lv. 48 Normal type, Ability: Thick Fat -Shadow Rush (Milk Drink) -Defense Curl -Rollout -Body Slam
From this point on, I won't make too many comments on the Shadow Pokémon we encounter since this is the last gauntlet of battles in the main game. You won't be able to use these Pokémon unless you want to experience the postgame. I suppose you can purposely lose one of the later fights in the gauntlet if you really wanted to use these Pokémon right now. That's not to say these Pokémon are useless, Miltank is an excellent normal type. In fact, at least half of the Pokémon you get during this gauntlet is pretty damn good. It's just that you only get to use them for the postgame which has a decent amount of content if you want to partake in the whole thing.
A really good defensive Pokémon that can deal decent damage. The starting move set is pretty good honestly. Drill Peck is a solid single-target attack with STAB. Air Cutter is a spread move that gets STAB as well. Not a bad option for a late game addition to the team.
Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPfrACIt30HC-9aA0M66tSqNPokémon Colosseum - Shadow Heracross (Cipher Peon Dioge)ThatOneGameBoy2026-08-29 | We can obtain a Master Ball from Eagun at this point. If you are using the infinite ball glitch like me, that means snagging Shadow Pokémon won't be an issue anymore. Catching Pokémon during a trainer battle was always one of my more disliked aspects about this game.
If you still want a fighting type Pokémon this late into the game, then Heracross is a good choice. All its missing is Megahorn which it learns at level 53 which you may or may not reach during the final gauntlet of trainers. If anything, it'll have it for the postgame if you decide to do that. Guts is the ability of choice here.
No. Just no. All I'll note is that Blizzard being 100% accurate in hail is not a thing in this game. That was added in Gen 4 onwards. It would be a very powerful spread move otherwise, but not with Delibird's stats.
Sunflora is supposed to be a sun sweeper with Solarbeam and Chlorophyll. And while its Solarbeam is fairly powerful, its speed is so low that Chlorophyll does not help it at all. Hard pass from me.
Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPfrACIt30HC-9aA0M66tSqNPokémon Colosseum - Cipher Admin Ein (First Battle)ThatOneGameBoy2026-08-22 | Ein has an interesting team. It's a mix of various things than can potentially be troublesome. His main method of damage is setting up Rain Dance to make Thunder 100% accurate. Three of his Pokémon have Confuse Ray (Golbat, Huntail & Lanturn). Two of his Pokémon have Toxic (Altaria & Golbat).
Raikou is one of the fastest Pokémon you can get in this game. You may as well copy Ein and just spam Thunder in the rain for massive damage. Unfortunately, Raikou can't do much else aside from that. It can learn Reflect for some support, I guess.
Vibrava, and eventually Flygon, is probably the best option for the Earthquake TM. STAB, high attack stat and high speed stat make it a really good candidate for it. Being immune to ground and electric attacks is also pretty good. Overall, a solid choice for this game if you decide to use the Earthquake TM on it.

Who would've guessed.
Granbull Lv. 43 Normal type, Ability: Intimidate -Shadow Rush (Bite) -Scary Face -Roar -Strength
Granbull is a heavy hitter with the Intimidate ability. The ability already makes it worth using, but with some TM investment, it can be a powerhouse for the team. Just remember that Granbull is very slow and is a normal type in this game since fairy didn't exist yet.
Ariados Lv. 43 Item: Silver Powder Bug & Poison type, Ability: Insomnia OR Swarm -Shadow Rush (Spider Web) -Scary Face -Leech Life -Sludge Bomb
Ariados doesn't really have much of a purpose in a game like this. Spider Web is usually its draw, but because the whole game is trainer battles where Pokémon cannot run away, Spider Web is kind of pointless. I guess you can trap the enemies while using Perish Song, but using Ariados just for that seems like a waste. It can use a decently strong Sludge Bomb, but poison is not a good offensive type, especially since fairy doesn't exist in this game.
A purely defensive Pokémon would make a pretty good addition to the team in a game with all double battles. It also helps that it can just eat hits while catching other Shadow Pokémon. Explosion is also a worthwhile move to use in double battles if you just need to nuke the enemy.
This is Gen 3, so no Prankster, no Tailwind, no Foul Play and no Eviolite. If it had Taunt, then it could serve a niche purpose of being a fast Taunt user, but the lack of a Move Relearner stops that idea.
Aipom Lv. 43 Normal type, Ability: Pickup OR Run Away -Shadow Rush (Baton Pass) -Tickle -Fury Swipes -Swift
I don't see much point in using Aipom. The only move it can use Baton Pass with is Agility at level 50. I guess Swift can do okay chip damage since it gets STAB. Yeah, I got nothing.
If Sneasal had Taunt, then I say it would be worth using as a fast Taunt user. Unfortunately, Sneasal cannot learn Taunt in this game due to a lack of a Move Relearner. The only thing Sneasal is good for is being a fast Icy Wind user. Icy Wind is a spread move that guarantees reducing speed by one stage. You don't use it for the damage, but for speed control. The chip damage can be nice for catching other Shadow Pokémon though.
Piloswine is an option for the Earthquake TM since it would get STAB and has a high attack stat. But there are better options for the Earthquake TM, so it is ultimately up to you.
Stantler Lv. 43 Normal type, Ability: Intimidate -Shadow Rush (Astonish) -Hypnosis -Leer -Take Down
Stantler has two key things going for it: Initimidate and Hypnosis. A pretty good combination honestly. It's decently fast too. Stantler can learn a lot of useful moves through TMs too. Some good TMs are Reflect, Light Screen, Thunderbolt and Psychic. Calm Mind at level 49 can be useful too even if you'll be getting it at the end of the game.
Gligar is a weird pick. Not a great movepool even with TM investment and stats aren't spectacular. The only good thing I can say is that it is immune to electric and ground type attacks.

All of her Pokémon has Attract except for her Shadow Pokémon. Watch out for her Steelix since it has Earthquake.
Suicune is the best Surf spammer in the game. Considering Surf has been given to only physical attackers up until this point, this makes Suicune the only special attacker to actually make good use of it. Suicune gets Aurora Beam at level 41 for some coverage or you can teach it Ice Beam via TM. Unfortunately, Calm Mind is learned at level 81 which means you're not getting it and the TM for Calm Mind does not exist in this game.

Also get it, Kloak and Dagur. Cloak and Dagger.
Ledian Lv. 40 Bug & Flying type, Ability: Swarm OR Early Bird -Shadow Rush (Baton Pass) -Safeguard -Supersonic -Comet Punch
I have nothing good to say about Ledian. Even in a game with very few options for team making, Ledian is still at the bottom. I suppose Ledian can be a decently fast supporter with access to Safeguard, Reflect and Light Screen. Baton Pass might seem interesting, but I think the only move it can use it with is Agility.
Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI8_pdhMfPfrACIt30HC-9aA0M66tSqNPokémon Colosseum - Cipher Admin Dakim (First Battle)ThatOneGameBoy2026-08-06 | Dakim has a team that likes to spam Earthquake. 3 of his 5 Pokémon can use Earthquake. Despite having Protect on most of his Pokémon, he doesn't use it often enough to cover for his own Earthquake. This is both a good and bad thing since he can knock out his own Pokémon, but he can also knock out the Shadow Pokémon you're trying to snag.
Also, this is why I don't usually upload videos of me catching Pokémon because the luck-based nature of facing low catch rate Pokémon can really extend the video length. The battle was finished in the first five minutes of this video. The extra fifteen minutes were failing Poké Balls. This is kind of the issue with Colosseum combining trainer battling with Pokémon catching: making fights last longer than needed.
Our first legendary Pokémon. While Entei isn't the best out of the three beasts, it still has high stats across the board compared to most other Shadow Pokémon you can snag in this game. You can use it purely as a stat stick member of your team and still do well enough.
