朱色で漆塗りをしたのち、粗い金粉を重ねます。
これを「朱金」といい、見る角度や光の当たり方によって、朱色の中から金色がふわりと浮かび上がる、華やかな色合いとなります。
This process involves applying daisy flowers with lacquer to delicately cut crystal glass.
After applying a coat of vermilion lacquer, coarse gold powder is layered on top.
This is called "vermilion gold," and depending on the angle and lighting, the gold softly emerges from the vermilion, creating a gorgeous hue.

The liquid collected from the lacquer tree is filtered through special paper to remove impurities and is called “raw lacquer”.
Vessels coated with raw lacquer are called lacquerware.
This is the first painting process.
After this, let it dry and apply it again, building up several layers.

The process involves applying lacquer as an adhesive and then applying gold leaf on top of it.
It is a traditional decoration technique called "Kinpakuoshi".
This process involves wiping away the gold leaf, which is only a few ten thousandths of a millimeter, evenly with a cloth. The degree of wiping varies depending on the dryness of the base lacquer, temperature, and humidity, and is said to be the most difficult to control and timing.

The magic mallet became widely known through the folktale "Issun-boshi."
In the story, a small boy just one inch (about 3cm) tall defeats an ogre and obtains the magic mallet. The boy then uses the mallet to grow bigger and live happily ever after with a princess.
A hammer, a tool used to strike things, can change shape, so it has come to be associated with the meaning of opening up good fortune.
Just as the boy in Issun-boshi had his wish granted, the magic mallet is not just a tool; it represents the desire to make wishes come true.

This is a scene of the production of a hand-ground bowl by a skilled craftsman.
To make one bowl, the potter's wheel is turned and four to five tools are used to carve the bowl.
This is a delicate and nerve-wracking process, as even the slightest movement of the hand can cause distortion in the wood.
However, by carving by hand, the result is a precise yet soft form with a certain warmth.

The inside of shells such as luminous pearls and abalones, with their shiny, inner parts, are carefully cut out.
This must be done carefully, as the shells can crack or get scratched if too much pressure is applied.
The shells cut out in this way are then fitted into the surface of the lacquerware.
This is a traditional decoration technique known as "raden."

When applying lacquer, an artist deliberately leaves brush marks rather than smoothing them out, which is called the "brush mark technique."
A variety of expressions can be created depending on the type of brush, the angle at which it is applied, and how smoothly the brush is smoothed.
Here you can see the artist layering the lacquer on top, using the maki-e technique, in which gold powder is applied on top while the lacquer liquid is still wet.

After the vessels are coated with lacquer, they are placed in a large rotating wooden box.
This wooden box is called a "lacquer room," and it maintains a constant temperature and humidity, allowing the lacquer to dry evenly.

With a quick rotation of his left hand, he spreads the lacquer from the base of the bowl to his shoulder.
After applying the lacquer with great care to avoid getting any dust or dirt on the bowl, the process moves on to the drying stage.
This is part of the top coat process, and the craftsman who applies lacquer to the wood base like this and completes the process is called a "nushi."

Gold or silver leaf is applied to the vessel, and then a transparent lacquer is applied on top to make the pattern stand out.
This is a highly advanced traditional technique called "Byakudan nuri."
Because leaf is metal, it is prone to unevenness due to static electricity, and its nature also makes it prone to unevenness, making it an extremely difficult process.
However, the use of leaf creates a beautiful and delicate reflection of light.

The technique of cutting out thin slices of the pearly, shining part from the inside of a shell and inlaying it over a coat of lacquer is called "raden."
This is the work done before placing the shell on top of the lacquer. The shells are cut into the shape of maple leaves.
This is done carefully and precisely to avoid cracking or scratching the thin shells.
This is a job that requires skilled technique and requires careful assessment of the thickness of the shell.
Through the meticulous handiwork of skilled artisans, it is possible to imbue the vessel with the unique brilliance of nature.

To make the painted surface of lacquerware smooth, craftsmen use charcoal.
This is called abrasive charcoal, and is made by tool craftsmen.
Abrasive charcoal allows for delicate finishing without damaging the material, and the cross section of the charcoal has no holes for air to pass through.
It is generally indistinguishable from the original, but craftsmen who use it can tell the difference just by picking it up.

Lacquerware is a craft made by applying layers of sap extracted from the trunks of lacquer trees onto wooden vessels and other items.
Makie is a technique in which pictures, patterns, and letters are drawn on the surface of lacquerware with lacquer, and then, before the lacquer dries, powdered gold, silver, or other metal is sprinkled on top to create a picture.
In this article, we will introduce some of the tools used by artisans in the makie technique.

The lacquer sap extracted from lacquer trees is filtered to remove impurities such as the bark, and is called "kiurushi (raw lacquer)."
This is the filtering process. Special paper called kosushi paper is layered and attached to a strainer, and the lacquer is twisted by hand to strain it.
This process is repeated several times to create a beautiful lacquer sap that is ready for the painting process.

Pictures are drawn on delicately cut crystal glass with lacquer, and then gold powder is sprinkled on it with a special tool made from a reed.
The lacquer acts as an adhesive, leaving the gold powder only on the areas of the picture.
This is a traditional decorative technique called "makie."
This traditional Japanese technique, which has a history of over 1,200 years, has been passed down by artisans, who have transformed it into various forms.

This is an important step before the artisan begins work.
The brush, which has already been washed, is washed carefully and slowly in a special liquid from the base to the tip until all the lacquer liquid has been removed.
This is the only time the brush is washed. From here, work can begin.

Hon'ami Koetsu was born in Kyoto in the first year of the Eiroku era.
He left his mark in many fields, including as a calligrapher, potter, and artist. In the world of calligraphy, he is counted as one of the "Three Calligraphers of the Kan'ei Era" along with Konoe Nobutada and Shokado Shōjō, and is said to have been praised by Tokugawa Iemitsu as "a treasure unto the world."
One of his masterpieces is the National Treasure "Funabashi Maki-e Inkstone Box."
The maki-e inkstone box is decorated with medieval waka poetry arranged in a scattered style, making it a masterpiece that gives an impression of simplicity while still being luxurious.
This is a masterpiece that faithfully reproduces that national treasure.

The ``Maki-e technique'' involves drawing pictures and patterns with lacquer and then sprinkling gold or silver metal powder on them before the lacquer hardens. Among the makie techniques, the one that enhances the pattern to create a more three-dimensional effect is called ``taka makie.'' This is the production process for a watch dial that was selected by Chopard.

Since it is not possible to create a variety of expressions with the same gold particles, there are many different types of gold powder used by makie artists. By using gold powder with different grain sizes and shapes, we expand the world of depiction. Gold particles are very fine and fly easily, so I combine powder cylinders and brushes that match the gold powder and store them in a drawer.
