Written by Martin Luther in 1541, Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word was a prayer for safety as the Turkish army threatened to take Vienna. Though references of the threat of the Turks and the Pope to the church have since been removed, this hymn is still used today in times of war or persecution to proclaim God's Word. The text is constructed in a Trinitarian mold with stanza 1 singing to God the Father, stanza 2 to God the Son, and stanza 3 singing to God the spirit.
Lyrics:
Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would seek to overthrow your Son
And to destroy what he has done.
Lord Jesus Christ, your pow'r make known,
For you are Lord of lords alone;
Defend your Christendom that we
May sing your praise eternally.
O Comforter of priceless worth,
Send peace and unity on earth.
Support us in our final strife,
And lead us out of death to life.
