A Twin-Peaks like mystery. An open-world game before open-world games were a thing. This is Mizzurna Falls, a late 1998 release for the Playstation 1. A game exploring uncharted territory with its open-world approach.
It's a case of the developers ambitions punching well above their weight class. It's full of jank and frustration, held together by duct tape. Yet there's something special found within. The most obvious comparison is to Deadly Premonition.
Even then, it takes a far different approach to its David Lynch influences and its gameplay. Where Deadly Premonition leans into the absurd, Mizzurna Falls explores the darker undercurrents hiding beneath the surface of this small Colorado town.
What adds to the mystique of Mizzurna Falls is that it never saw a release outside of Japan. But thanks to the hard work of dedicated fans, would receive translations a couple of decades later.
To be clear - by no means is Mizzurna Falls a great game. Its many frustrations hold it back from greatness. But it's a one-of-a-kind title. The twists, the turns, and the intrigue of the story drive it forward. It's a fascinating glimpse into the early days of open-world games before best practices emerged. And if you're a fan of the works of David Lynch, it's unique Japanese interpretation pays excellent homage while being its own thing.

Resident Evil has seen many minigames throughout the years. But there are none more constant, or more enjoyable than The Mercenaries.
A minigame so good that it ended up getting its own standalone title. It's seen several iterations throughout the years to accommodate for the changes in the series gameplay. Each bring its own unique flair to the table. In this video, we'll go through each iteration of The Mercenaries, along with ranking them.
To note, I won't be covering modes like Raid from the Revelations titles, or Extreme Battle from RE2. While these modes have plenty of overlap, the sole focus for this video is on The Mercenaries.

Setting the foundations for survival horror over 30 years ago, Alone in the Dark would take several sharp turns over the years. It's struggled with its identity and consistency. With frequent hiatuses and uneven quality, the Alone in the Dark series has faded in and out of the public consciousness.
While a bit rough around the edges, the first game is a classic. A title exploring uncharted territory and laid the foundations of survival horror. It received two rapid followups. Games with theirs merits, but lost much of what made the original special.
The series went on hiatus until 2001 with The New Nighmare. In that timeframe, Resident Evil would build on the formula laid down by Alone in the Dark. Survival horror as a genre would explode in popularity, with Resident Evil clones as far as the eye could see.
The New Nightmare, while a solid entry, feels derivative and undercooked. A series playing catchup and did little to differentiate itself from other Resident Evil clones.
2008 saw the reboot of Alone in the Dark. As far as "best worst games" go, it's near the very top of that list. The 2008 Alone in the Dark is an amazing trainwreck. Few games better demonstrate the idea of "everything but the kitchen sink" in its design. It's a fascinating title I couldn't stop thinking about.
After another long hiatus, the series would return in 2015 with Alone in the Dark Illumination. While the 2008 Alone in the Dark was one of the best worst games, Illuminations is a straight up awful game. A multiplayer title taking queues from games like Left for Dead, Illumination feels like a prototype rushed out the door.
After yet another long break, the series would return in 2024 with Alone in the Dark. While a welcome return to the series roots, the game suffers from story bloat and generic third person shooter gameplay.
In this video, we'll go through each game in the series - the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the franchise offers. By the end, you'll have an understanding of why the Alone in the Dark franchise is so fascinating, frustrating and, at times, maddening.

While I'm not a fan of giving games a numerical score, there's no hesitation in me giving the Resident Evil Remake a 10/10. It's the best that survival horror has to offer, bar none. Depending on what day of the week you ask me, either this, Resident Evil 4, or Deus Ex is my favorite game.
It's also the best showing of a remake is. A director coming back with better technology to create a experience with what he had in mind the first time around. A far cry from the nostalgia baiting and creative stagnation of most remakes these days. Games that while good, fail reach the highs of their counterparts.
The Resident Evil Remake exceeds the original. The additions and changes from the original add further layers to the decision making process. The end result is the best survival horror experience in how it balance exploration, resource management, and combat. Sure, some of the goofy charm of the original is lost, but it more than makes up with it on the gameplay front.
Before we begin, yes, I have done a video on the Resident Evil Remake in the past. One in the earlier days of the channel. One I wasn't 100% happy with. If Capcom can remake their games, then I can remake my videos.

Considering Bloober Team’s reputation and past output, I didn’t have high expectations for the Silent Hill 2 Remake. But they did surprise me in some ways. There's some quality level design and solid expansions and additions on the puzzle front. Combat, while not great, is serviceable.
That said, the remake suffers from excessive padding and bloat. A runtime that's about double that of the original. The tight pacing of Silent Hill 2 is gone, replaced by a meandering, long-winded journey that detracts from the experience.
Then, there’s the narrative. The Silent Hill 2 Remake feels like someone copied someone else’s homework without understanding the reasons behind the answers. Sure, most of the beats are the same, and most of the dialogue remains—though there are odd removals and additions. But it’s the whole package that falters: the voice acting, pacing, lighting, and cinematography. The result is a surface-level interpretation that lacks what made the original special.
One thing that always stuck with me about the original Silent Hill 2 is what Takayohsi Sato, one of the head creatives, said about their goals. 'Psychological horror needs to shake the human heart deeply.' I kept this in mind while playing the remake. The only thing that got plenty of shaking was my head at the creative decisions made. From the bloated runtime, to losing the essence of the original's narrative.
I'm tired of remakes, but if they're going to keep making them, I hope they can do the original justice. There are glimpses here and there of it, but they're few and far between.
In this video, I'll go through where the remake does the original justice, and where it goes wrong. As well, we'll go over some of the original's legacy, and its reputation of having a sizeable fanbase who've never played the game. There's merit to the meme of "Huge silent hill 2 fan excited to play it for the first time".
Before we dive in ,this is a full-spoiler dive for both the remake and the original.

In the realm of horror games, camera perspective can make a world of difference. From how the game controls, to how the game builds tension and evokes fear in the player.
A change in perspective can change the game, both from a literal and figurative sense. There's no better proof of this than mods that allow you to change a game's camera perspective. From changing an over the shoulder experience to a fixed camera, over the shoulder to first person, or even a fixed camera to first person or over the shoulder.
This video has two purposes. One is bringing a spotlight to mods from the Resident Evil, Dead Space, and Silent Hill series that change the camera perspective.
The second is discussing the merits and drawbacks of three types of camera perspectives. That being fixed camera, first person, and over the shoulder.
Yes, there are other camera perspectives horror game use. Top down is one of them- games like Signalis, Conscript, and Darkwood use them to great effect. But for this video, I'll be focusing on the big three.
Spoiler alert - I'll be gushing about fixed cameras while dunking on the overuse of over the shoulder for modern, large budget horror games. This video will also serve as a plea for larger studios to take another chance on fixed cameras. Indie titles do a great job of keeping fixed cameras alive, and I would love to see larger studios take another crack at them.

Hollowbody takes the gameplay formula of the classic Silent Hill titles and runs with it, with a dash of tech-noir.
A solo developer project, Hollowbody continues the streak of quality indie releases in the survival horror realm. Like Conscript and Crow Country from earlier this year, if you're craving a new, classic survival horror experience, look to the indies.
Hollowbody did leave me wanting more - it is a bit on the short side, even by survival horror standards. But I did enjoy my time with it, and if you also backed the game on kickstarter, you should too.
If you're a fan of what I cover on the channel, it will be right up your alley. In this video, I'll go over how Hollowbody nails the classic Silent Hill gameplay formula, and what it brings to the table.
As this is a new release, I will keep try to keep spoilers to a minimum.

The Obscure series offer quality horror experiences in the mid 2000s heydays of the sixth generation of gaming. They have their own quirks and flair to stand out from other titles of this timeframe. The first Obscure uses a high school setting, while the sequel uses University. Underutilized settings in the world of horror gaming, despite being ripe for usage.
Both Obscure games serve as nice period pieces of the mid 2000s. A showing of the hold high school had on pop culture. While taking place in America, French studio Hydravision Entertainment developed the games. Some of those European touches give the Obscure games a unique flavor that you won't find elsewhere.
Both Obscure titles have their merits and drawbacks. The first Obscure has a more arcade-like feel to its gameplay. The sequel addresses some of the first games shortcomings, but loses some of its unique feel. It's a case of a few steps forward, with a few steps back. It's a sequel that feels a bit more by the books and generic.
That said, they're well worth checking out if you're a fan of what I cover on the channel.

Stubbs the Zombie is one of the perfect rental titles from back in the day of its release in late 2005.
It's a title where the sum is greater than its parts. Gameplay is fun, if somewhat barebones, no pun intended.
It's one of the better examples of a game executing on its humor. One that's very much of its time - juevenille, crass, vulgar, raunchy. A better timeframe, before marvel humor, reddit humor, borderlands humor, whatever you want to call it came around and lay waste to all things comedy.
While video rental stores are a relic of the past, Stubbs serves as the perfect sale game. One you can pick up for a few bucks and have some fun with, solo or co-op for a few hours before moving on. That, or you add it to your pile of ever growing steam sale backlog.
Coming from a small studio with ties to one of the most iconic series in gaming, Stubbs offers silly fun for those that get on its wavelength.
It's a solid, memorable, if unspectacular game from the golden age of gaming. A title from the closing stretches of the sixth generation of gaming, the xbox, ps2, gamecube era. The greatest generation of gaming.

Cold Fear is one of those games you'd rent for a weekend from Blockbuster back in the day. The game you wanted had no copies left, but the box art of Cold Fear intrigued you, and there was a copy available. It's a solid, short 7/10, mid-budget game in an era full of them.
It has many things going for it. The realistic swaying of a ship at sea gives Cold Fear a unique edge. Even then, it's a mechanic the game could've gotten far more mileage out of. It makes use of fixed camera angles, with a shift to over the shoulder while aiming down a gun. It has a solid story that pulls many tropes and beats from the sci-fi action horror genre.
Cold Fear was a game that slipped under the radar, a title that sold little. Released about two months after Resident Evil 4 in March of 2005, Cold Fear has always lived in RE4's shadow. And for good reason.
It's easy to compare the two with the timing of releases, and the over the shoulder aiming. Something that may have been a coincidence with the timing. While RE4 may have popularized this approach, it wasn't the first. It's also possible that Cold Fear's approach to the camera took inspiration from an earlier version of RE4.
It's a game that's grown a small but devoted audience over the years. When you look at the game's release window, it's easy to see why it fell through the cracks. It's one of the more requested games for me to cover on the channel. I haven't played Cold Fear before making this video, only familiar with it through osmosis.
Having now played it, I can see why it has its share of devoted fans. You can do better, but you can also do plenty worse. Cold Fear is a solid 7/10 title from 2005, which makes it far more enjoyable than most modern releases. While the days of renting video games are long gone, it's a perfect Steam sale kind of game. One you can either get around to or add to that neverending backlog of steam sale games you never played.

Conscript is a fantastic survival horror experience. One of the best in years.
I've said it over and over that if you're looking for an old-school survival horror experience, look to the indies. The best survival horror titles from recent years have come from the indie space. Alisa, Amenisa: The Bunker, Crow Country, Darkwood, Signalis, Tormented Souls. You can add Conscript to that list. A title where a bulk of the work is from one developer, Jordan Mochi.
Along with Alisa, Conscript got me to back Kickstarter projects again, after a long string of disappointments. I backed the project back in 2020 after playing the demo. A title I kept my eye on, waiting in anticipation. These things takes time. Was Conscript worth the wait? Yes.
It's funny how between the time of backing and now, we saw another survival horror title set in WW1. That being Amnesia: The Bunker. The best game I played from 2023. Funny that the best game I played in 2024 may very well be a survival horror title also using WW1 as a setting.
That said, they are very different titles. The Bunker was a more confined area, the WW1 setting more of a backdrop. Fending off one primary monster throughout. Conscript is about the war itself. The trenches, the underground tunnels, the countryside and town ruins. Conscript delves into the horrors of the great war.
Conscript is a blending of old-school survival horror, while pulling elements from aciton-based horror. Limited inventories and resources, with interconnected level design. There is more combat, this is war after all.
But where it pulls more from the action-oriented side is the addition of a merchant, and a store. A currency system. One that adds a whole other layer to the decision making process. I haven't come across another survival horror title that blends the store functionality with a more old-school survival horror design as well as Conscript.
If you backed Conscript on kickstarter, enjoy it once your key is available. The wait was worth it. Thinking about a purchase? Well, if you're a fan of what I cover on the channel, it's a no-brainer. Unless something comes out between now and then that blows my socks off, it's the best game I've played from 2024.
DISCLOSURE: I did back the title on Kickstarter. The game's publisher, Team17, provided me with an early review key.

Kenichi Iwao Interview - crimson-head.com/interviews/kenichi-iwao
Parasite Eve had two back to back titles within a couple of years followed by a third title over a decade later.
Each title would take a different approach to its gameplay. The first Parasite Eve took a JRPG-first approach, with dashes of survival horror. A title with stellar pacing from beginning to end. It was playing to the strengths of its developer Square, with tweaks to their formula. The end result was one of the best games of its year, from what may be the greatest year in gaming, 1998.
Parasite Eve 2 would pull more heavy influence from Resident Evil. It brought the survival horror elements to forefront, with the JRPG elements secondary. While it brings some great ideas to the table, it suffers from pacing issues. It throws away several elements that made the first game so memorable. Depending on how you look at it, it's a solid Resident Evil clone, or a betrayal of what made the first game great.
And the Third Birthday? Well, good thing it's not called "Parasite Eve 3", for it's an insult to the name Parasite Eve. The gameplay moves even further away from the series strengths. A cover shooter with JRPG elements. While the combat system does have its merits and brings interesting ideas to the table, it's not suited for the series. On the narrative front? Without hesitation, it's the worst plot I've covered on this channel. One of the worst plots and cases of character assassination that I've come across. An ending so bad that once the credits began to roll, I booed at the screen.
There are few series that sway in so many directions in so few entries. Which makes it a fascinating series to dive into. Before making this video, I had only played the first game. I was curious to see how Parasite Eve 2 would handle its survival horror elements. I was aware of the reputation of the 3rd Birthday and had a morbid curiosity with how it would unfold. We'll go through each title and what they bring to the fold.
Of course, you can't talk about Parasite Eve without its source material. The series isn't an original IP from Square. Instead, the games act as a loose sequel to the 1995 Japanese Sci-fi horror novel, Parasite Eve. In this video, I'll give my thoughts on the novel. As well, I'll cover the 1997 Japanese film adaptation of the book.

• Dino Crisis REbirth PC Patch: classicrebirth.com/index.php/dino-crisis-classic-rebirth
Dino Crisis is a distinct series amongst Capcom's output. In four short years, from 1999 to 2003, we got 3 mainline titles and a spinoff. Dino Crisis has been extinct ever since.
A series pulled from the foundations of Resident Evil to the point where it was known as "resident evil with dinosaurs". It would then take a different, action-heavy approach with future titles.
Each title has a vast difference from the last. Some changes worked, and some did not. A bungled third mainline title would serve as the series end.
Yet the series has lived on with a strong following hankering for Capcom to return to the series.
Straps yourselves in, this is going to be a bumpy ride as we dig up and study the Dino Crisis series.

Get BioForge on GOG (affiliate): bit.ly/bouldergogbioforge
BioForge is a fascinating title during the unexplored territory days of gaming. A game with fixed camera angles and tank controls that came out after Alone in The Dark, but before Resident Evil. I wouldn't exactly call it a survival horror title, but there are many elements of the old school formula within. Back before there was a formula.
It's one of those games you'd expect there to be an episode of Ross's Game Dungeon on. As of writing, that isn't the case. But if you're like me, you became aware of BioForge thanks to others who dusted off old games on the regular.
BioForge is an ambitious title from an ambitious studio, Origin Systems. Best known for their Ultima and Wing Commander titles, BioForge goes for something different. A title well before best practices emerged in many different fields of game development. As a result, BioForge can be a bit of a choppy experience. The game pulls heavy from the trial and error elements of old school point and click titles. The tank controls are the clunkiest I've ever used. The combat system, while fascinating and ambtious, lacks on its execution.
Still, it's a fascinating title that if you're willing to put up its quirks, is worth checking out.

The Galerians series is one of the more interesting Resident Evil clones to pop up during the late 90s and early 2000s. It takes the survival horror formula, strips down on horror, and takes a more action-based approach.
Instead of guns at our disposal, we have psychic powers. With a angsty teenager as our protagonist, the games deliver in late 90s and early 2000s edginess. Very much a product of its time - a much better time. A game that not only wears its Resident Evil influence on its sleeve, but the Akira series as well.
Both Galerians title take different approaches from one another. The first Galerians is classic in its survival horror setup. Fixed camera angles, tank controls, resource management - what you'd expect from a PS1 title of its era.
Galerians Ash, an early PS2 title, takes a different approach. Gone are the fixed cameras and tank controls. It takes a more traditional 3d approach to its combat, with only scraps of the survival horror formula present. It's a mishmash of ideas that results in one of the more disappointing sequels I've played in some time. While its core identity is still there, it strips away so much of what made the original a great experience. One that's well worth your time if you haven't had the chance to. The sequel? Not so much.

A Sega production, Deep Fear released in mid 1998 at the tail end of the Sega Saturn's life. While released in Europe, it never saw a North American release.
Deep Fear goes for a horror experience below the ocean's surface - an isolated military base. There are some interesting ideas with how the game handles our oxygen supply. Yet the game does little to put any challenge on the player with it, or with combat. There's no limited inventory to deal with, and ammo is never in short supply.
While an isolated military base under the ocean is a great setting, the exploration in Deep Fear is ho-hum. Areas blur into one another.
It's a far cry from what Resident Evil was able to achieve. Consider the fact that 1998 also saw the release of Resident Evil 2, and Deep Fear feels extra dated. Like a title they should've held off on until the release of the Dreamcast.
That said, Deep Fear does have its merits. It's one of the better cases of early survival horror cheese. From its hammy voice acting, to its memorable cast of characters. It helps make up for some of the lackluster gameplay.
It's by no means an essential play. If you do have a passing interest for the earlier days of Survival Horror, Deep Fear is worth looking into. You can do much better, but you can also do worse.

Crow Country is in-line with titles like Signalis, Alisa, and Tormented Souls. Titles from smaller studios being faithful to old-school survival horror, with their own twists.
Crow country has its own bag of tricks to add tweaks to the survival horror formula. It's one I came across during a recent Steam Next Fest, finding the demo promising.
Does the full game live up to the promise of the demo? Yes, and then some.
Crow Country has some of the best interconnected level design I've come across in some time. There's several great puzzles that don't fall into common survival horror trappings. Its presentation and perspective add a flair that helps Crow Country stand out.
It gets my stamp of approval and well worth your time.

The Medium isn't my kind of game. A walking simulator with light puzzle and gameplay elements sprinkled throughout. The story has its moments - it's a descent premise - but remains ho-hum for large stretches.
It suffers from several common issues that plague modern gaming. A protagonist that doesn't know when to pipe down, and lacks of subtlety. The Medium spells everything out to and for us.
It's a game I wouldn't give much thought to beyond one key fact. The studio behind the Medium, Bloober Team are helming the Silent Hill 2 Remake.
Despite the Medium being a ho-hum experience, I am glad I played it. It gives me a better idea of what to expect with the Silent Hill 2 Remake. What I experienced doesn't give me much hope for the Remake - not that I had much before.
Now, to be fair, I'm not a fan of remakes - something I've made clear throughout several videos. Of games that do not need a remake, Silent Hill 2 would be near the very top of my list. It's was very much lighting in a bottle. The expectations and reverence for such a title makes it something that's going to be next to impossible to top. I don't care who would be making the remake - to expect anything else would be a fool's errand.
Before playing The Medium, I was only familiar with Bloober Team through osmosis. I was aware of the many criticisms thrown bloober's way. For their horror output, and specific issues with The Medium. I did have some preconceived notions going in of what to expect.
I can see how some have come to have certain interpretations and conclusions of The Medium. I found myself not coming to the same conclusions and interpretation at points.
It's not like the game's plot doesn't have issues. It has plenty of them. There's a lack of subtlety. There are several questionable choices in how they deal with heavy subject matter. While it looks great, there's little beyond the surface level.
Having now played The Medium, I do see a different trajectory in how the Silent Hill 2 remake might play out from what I had in mind before. I don't have much hope for it, but now it's in a different way.
Bloober team can build out a descent atmosphere, and the dual reality system is intriguing. But they do next to nothing interesting with it - making it worse with what they've done with the technology.

I've covered several oddball horror titles on this channel. Hellnight, or known as Dark Messiah in Japan, is another one to add to that collection.
It's one of the strangest, most engrossing games I've played in some time. It's a title that makes the most out of its modest budget and the technological constraints of the PS1. The first person perspective, combined with low polygon count and draw distance, gives the player plenty of room to fill in the blanks.
With a constant pursuer throughout with little means of defense, it's a title well ahead of its time. A horror game a decade before titles like Amnesia: The Dark Descent made this kind of horror popular.
The plot throws you into terrifying scenarios from a wide variety of influences. Yet, it never loses a sense of cohesion with what Hellnight throws your way.
While released in Japan and Europe, it never saw a North American release. Sales were low with a wide range of review scores. It's a game well worth your time.
Much of Hellnight's DNA you can find in games to this day.

A crowdfunded spiritual successor to Clock Tower in name, Nightcry is anything but. It's mega discount Clock Tower. Clock Tower at Home. Dollar store Clock Tower - my initial name for the video before I realized someone else already used it.
There is quality talent behind the scenes here. The director of the first two clock towers returns, along with other notable names in the industry. But as we've seen in many crowdfunded titles, that's no guarantee for success. Nightcry is a great example.
To be fair, there are moments where you can see something descent buried amongst the bizarre and nonsensical of Nightcry. They were working with a shoestring budget and timeframe. But that is far and few between. The end result is a tossed-together spiritual successor with much to offer, and not in a good way.
There are several puzzling, bizarre design decisions throughout NIghtcry. Plot threads dropped on a whim. It's not quite a "so bad it's good" kind of game - although it does flirt with that at times. But I can't recall the last time a game made me feel so gobsmacked while playing. Let's take a look at why.

Ghosthunter is one of those titles that's flown more under the radar from this timeframe. The gameplay is fine, if awkward and undercooked at points. It's the characters, the locations, the writing, and the humor that do the heavy lifting.
Ghosthunter has a great balance of humor and horror. Although more emphasis is on the humor, its able to get dark at a moments notice without tonal whiplash. It's one of the better games I've come across that are able to execute on its humor.
As far as overlooked horror titles, Ghosthunter is one of the lesser ones, but it has merits that are worth experiencing.

Since the series inception almost 15 years ago, The Batman Arkham series has since offered some of the best gaming experiences. Titles that would have noticeable influence on other titles from other studios. Yet, few could come close to what the series had to offer. Four games in total (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Origins & Arkham Knight), each have their strengths and weaknesses.
It's funny to look back at how a studio with one game under their belt at the time had the keys to the Batman franchise. Licensed games could be all over the place in quality. But to produce titles that were GOTY worthy, and some of the best games in the last 15 years? Talk about a welcome surprise.

Its gameplay and resource management are unlike anything I've encountered in a survival horror title. Illbleed nails the campy, tongue-in-cheek B-movie horror humor. The amount of absurd scenarios and characters the game tosses your wave always keeps you wondering what's coming next.
And like many games from this era, Illbleed fell into obscurity and became a rarity to find. It launched as a Dreamcast exclusive in the spring of 2001. A few weeks before Sega discontinued hardware production of the Dreamcast. An Xbox port of Illbleed never came to fruition.
With Sega announcing they're bringing back several IPs, from remasters to remakes, I was hoping they'd do a remaster of Illbleed. That said, Illbleed seems to be in an IP rights limbo. It's not clear who has ownership of the IP. Unlike Blue Stinger, the studio's previous title, its ownership seems to be up in the air.
Leaving you with a couple of options for playing Illbleed. Emulation, like I'm doing here, or buying a copy for an inflated price.
Illbleed deserves its due. While it is a bit rough around the edges, it's one of the more memorable games I've played, for a variety of reasons.

Nightmare Creatures gets plenty of comparisons to Bloodborne, and for good reason. Plague-ridden streets of mid 19th century London with things that go bump in the night.

That said, Nightmare Creatures 2 is more in the vein of Bloodborne. The first game is more hack and slash with level design similar to classic FPS titles. While it falls victim to some issues plaguing early 3D titles, it's still a blast to play and one you can pick up at any time.
Nightmare Creatures 2 is slower, more spread out, and more linear in its design. In ways, much more like Bloodborne. But it's a sequel that pushed the hardware of the Playstation to its absolute limits.
As a result, cutbacks were made in other areas like gameplay. Nightmare Creatures 2 is a case of one step forward, several steps back. It's one of the more disappointing sequels I've played. With that, let's look into the Nightmare Creatures series. Where the games go right, where they go wrong, and why they're still worth checking out. At least the first game.

NOTE: This is a reupload. The initial upload was August 22, 2023. For whatever reason the original video on Michigan: Report From Hell was age-restricted.
The PS2 saw many mid to low-budget titles of different genres and scopes. Michigan Report is one of them. The idea of being a cameraman recording news reports on horror events is an interesting one.

While this leads to minimal gameplay, it's everything else that makes Michigan Report such a fascinating title. Michigan: Report From Hell has some of the most over-the-top, cheesy voice acting around. There's one character in particular who's one of the most perplexing, fascinating characters I've come across in a game.
There's plenty here to piece together in Michigan Report, yet much remains open-ended. Some due to the game itself, and some due to the spotty localization.
What you end up with is a game that's a glorious trainwreck. One I had a blast going through. Michigan: Report is a title you may have heard of before, or seen clips from. For good reason. There's nothing quite like it if some for the wrong reasons.

It's dark, it's edgy, it's very much a product of its time - a much better time for the industry. The Suffering series has one of the better-executed morality systems I've come across. Its smaller scope and focus allow several choices to add up over the course of both titles. It's not like a 30+ hour RPG where "choices matter" - more would turn into the illusion of choice.

The Suffering has a simple, engaging story, that's told in an economical way. How it plays out will depend on your actions. That said, the second title, Ties that Bind, does over course correct in some areas. In some instances, it creates problems that didn't exist in the first Suffering. Still, it's a great game.
Both are worth your time if you haven't played. I've been meaning to check out The Suffering series for some time - I'm glad I did. As far as action horror goes, it's one of the better series around.

Blue Stinger can be all over the place as a result. It suffers some common issues from the early days of 3D gaming. Yet, Blue Stinger has an earnest charm about it that you don't come across these days.

Blue Stinger is one of the funnier games I've played. Some of it is due to the awkward nature of how it handles its conversations and voice acting. That said, there are a lot of funny scenarios our main characters stumble into.
It doesn't hurt that Blue Stinger's main characters are some of the more memorable, likable ones around.
A Dreamcast exclusive, Blue Stinger is a great title to give insight into the early days of the 6th generation of gaming, the best generation.
And while I'm late by a couple of weeks, Blue Stinger is one of the better games to play around Christmas.
