Interstate 496 Reopening - Lansing, Michigan socool775 2022-11-23 | Here I am as one of the first drivers on the reopened eastbound lanes of I-496. It had been closed for a complete rebuild since June 2nd, 2022. Reopening was originally scheduled for October 15th, 2022, but several delays put the project behind.
Driving through a derecho on the Indiana Toll Road - June 13th, 2022 socool775 2022-06-29 | Here’s more footage driving through the incredible derecho as it had begun to assemble into a formidable squall line. I was headed westbound on the 80/90 (@indianatollroad5314 ), and had stopped once to record footage out of the window. As I’d mentioned in my previous video, the torrential rain and hurricane-force wind gusts prevented me from being able to see as I was driving… and as such, I rolled down the drivers-side window and looked down to see the yellow line denoting the passing lane to tell me I was physically on the road. This derecho produced numerous reported wind gusts of 70 mph or greater, hail up to one inch in diameter, and many reports of flash flooding. Another section of this storm, still in Michigan at the time of this video, later ripped through Fort Wayne, Indiana… with Fort Wayne Int’l reporting a gust of 98 mph. I intercepted that storm in Van Wert county, Ohio, later that night.
Driving through a derecho - June 13th, 2022 socool775 2022-06-26 | Here I am leaving the Ernie Pyle Service Plaza, getting back on the westbound 80/90 (@indianatollroad5314 ). Almost immediately once I enter back onto the toll road, the rain begins falling in buckets. At several points, it was like driving through a swimming pool. In torrential rain, I often look for road signs to tell me that I am on the road. Because of the sparse number of interchanges on the 80/90, road signs are fewer and further between. I discovered that because I was heading directly into rain being blasted at the car like a fire hose, that none would come in from the drivers side window. I rolled down the window, and relied on the presence of the yellow line denoting the passing lane to tell me that I was still on the road. While the duration of this particular thunderstorm did not allow it to meet the full criteria of a derecho, this thunderstorm produced winds gusting near or over hurricane force. A wind gust of 75 mph was reported in White Pigeon, Michigan, and flooding from this exact same thunderstorm shut down production at the Abbott baby formula factory in Sturgis, Michigan. In times of torrential rain, here are some things to keep in mind:-While on the road, it is often extremely unsafe to stop for extended periods of time, even if you are on the shoulder-The safest option is to find shelter, safely off of the road and with protection for yourself. DO NOT seek shelter under an overpass.-If you must travel, and/or you can not find shelter, do the following:🟢Use the 4-way flashers. My rule of thumb is to use them when my speed is below 55 mph or when more than 15 mph below the posted speed, whichever is lower🟢Look for clues to tell you that you are on the road. This could include road signs, rolling the window down, or relying on rumble strips

At the tail end of the calendar year 2009, I had found out about a prolific Lake-Effect Snow event that was slated to fire up across the Great Lakes. Now, I've posted videos in the past of the Intellistar unit in Lansing while a Lake Effect Snow Advisory was in effect... but I was never fortunate enough to see the lake-effect snow machine bring any significant accumulations far enough inland to reach me in Lansing.So, South Haven came to mind. I had not been to South Haven before this, and I realized that they were in the ideal location given the North/NNW wind flow that controlled the bulk of this lake-effect snow event. Alas, we have a problem. A mild December left me without shoveling revenue, and the Dad was without funds as well. Enter, a friend of the dad's. He wired money to Dad for fuel and the hotel stay so we could travel to South Haven. It didn't take long once we got on Interstate 196... the main connector between Grand Rapids and Chicago, to see whiteout conditions and travel effectively reduced to one lane.Then we had the issue of only one cable box for two people. I had become accustomed to Charter communications on my travels, as they had taken far longer to force customers to connect cable boxes to televisions than Comcast did. Thankfully after some negotiating, the front desk manager at the Holiday Inn Express in South Haven allowed me to set up my laptop in an adjoining room.I have some of the only local forecast clips on YouTube featuring a Lake Effect Snow Warning, and of a forecast for "occasional snow and snow squalls" (doesn't it sound like the narration starts crapping out when it reads "squalls")?Here is a clip I had uploaded and soon pulled, featuring "Truth, Simplicity, and Love" by Soulstance. Livonia/Novi Intellistar - 08/20/09 20:09 EDT socool775 2020-03-08 | This was the third and final time I was able to record local forecasts on an Intellistar with traffic data. It was Intellistar #24601 on what was then Bright House Networks, which had carved out a tiny market in the northwestern Detroit suburbs. It was acquired by Charter Communications in 2015 and subsequently folded into the Charter Spectrum brand in 2016.The song in this local forecast is one of my favorites, "Rushing" by electronic music artist Moby. Despite its name, this song is very soothing, and is perfect for the evening times.
Local Forecast - 06/08/09 19:28 EDT socool775 2020-02-21 | Here's a local forecast I found with a jazzy number which I have no recollection of hearing on the local on the 8s: "Advanced Funk" by Maceo Parker.Some severe weather had moved through in the evening, producing ping-pong ball sized hail on the south side of the area. A Tornado Watch remained in effect... and this was the first weather bulletin issued for Ingham County since the weather bulletins page on the Intellistar was moved to the very front of every local forecast on May 18, 2009 (meaning it was the first thing when an Intellistar local forecast began).No copyright infringement is intended.
Fenton Intellistar - 09/04/10 18:18 EDT socool775 2020-02-15 | Here's a clip with Ryan Farish and "Essence". I HATED that regional map because of how half the map was just empty, the use of Cadillac instead of the more regionally important Traverse City, and several locations were out of place. It started on E85 without hesitation. I'd previously uploaded a clip of this XL from later in the morning, but this clip features the text forecast for that night. At the time, The Weather Channel was in storm alert for coverage of what they named #WinterStormTitan.This was the last time I ever saw this Weatherstar XL or any legacy STAR unit.

Gaylord Weatherstar XL - Labor Day 2010 04:28 EDT socool775 2020-01-31 | Perusing old clips again, I found this clip of the Weatherstar XL located right on the 45th parallel - the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole. I miss seeing the Weatherstar XL, and incidentally, the Gaylord Weatherstar XL was the last XL I ever saw - on March 3rd, 2014.What I could never understand about this XL was why the main CC observation site was Bellaire's Antrim County Airport - some 29 miles to the west of Gaylord... when Gaylord had Gaylord Regional Airport right on the south side of town. November 2008 Time Change socool775 2019-11-21 | Just before the clocks were slated to fall back an hour in November 2008, I happened to wake up. While I don't remember the reason, I remember how this began a tradition of staying up for the time change itself... both the spring forward in March and the fall back in November. Starting with Petoskey in October/November 2009, the dad and I began traveling to some other locations across Michigan to record the local on the 8s depicting the time changing at the conclusion of the local forecast in the lower display line. While my laptop ultimately did not cooperate with me at the exact moment of the time change in Petoskey that night, a tradition had been born. This ended in March 2012 with my visit to the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana. At that point, The Weather Channel began the gradual process of discontinuing full-length (two-minute) locals, and airing the locals a few seconds earlier to accommodate additional advertisements and brief live weather coverage before pre-recorded programming.Nevertheless, I have always been awake for every single time change since 2008. Anytime someone gets excited about an "extra hour of sleep" in November (I've never believed it works that way), or when they complain about "losing an hour of sleep" in March, I can't help but chuckle. I have actually worked third shift for two fall-backs, for which I get the entire shift list done beforehand, and use the additional hour of pay to do nothing constructive in any way, shape, or form. I would simply watch 3 episodes of Mary Tyler Moore. I have also worked third shift for a March spring forward too.Also as a side note, the advertisement seen in the lower display line toward the beginning is for Rosemarie Aquilina, who ended up winning her election to 30th Circuit Court Judge for Ingham County, and would eventually gain national attention for her presiding over a case regarding disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.The music here is by electronic music artist Moby, who has spent some time on the Local on the 8s playlists over the years.
East Lansing Intellistar - 02/02/09 20:58 EST socool775 2019-11-14 | I got a new laptop and decided to go through some videos from the hard drive which contains the majority of local forecast videos I had recorded. This clip was of the East Lansing Intellistar, recorded in nearby Haslett, Michigan. Back in 2009, this Intellistar had a few configuration errors, perhaps most notably the double appearance of the Interstate 96 marker underneath Ionia on the forecast metro map. Intellistar #22842 at the time covered East Lansing and the surrounding Meridian Township (which included Haslett and Okemos). In March 2011, my home Intellistar unit, #22840 in Lansing, was decommissioned and unit #22842 then began covering all Comcast-served areas in the Lansing Metro... albeit on channel 36 in Lansing and Channel 40 in East Lansing/Meridian Township. Intellistar #22842 was then taken out of service as part of a nationwide upgrade some years later.Here we have a catchy Latin tune that I do not remember airing in February 2009, "Piazza San Marco" by Armik. Flint Intellistar - 12/26/10 19:08 EST socool775 2019-10-02 | I managed to record some clips of the Comcast Intellistar that serves the city of Flint itself while visiting with some relatives. On the sat/rad segment, notice the blizzard Nor'easter moving up the Eastern Seaboard. Apparently the folks on the Eastern Seaboard, who had seen a lot of big snows that winter, decided to pretend to complain about the snow while actually enjoying it and hogging it to themselves. If you know someone from the mid-Atlantic and Eastern Seaboard, please let them know how much it bothers me that they refuse to share their snow. Petoskey Weatherstar XL - 10/31/09 19:38 EDT socool775 2019-05-18 | Back in November 2008, I accidentally woke up just before the time we would switch the clocks back an hour. As such, I began a recording that started a tradition. Both in November when we fall back, and in March when we spring forward, I would make sure to record The Weather Channel in as many places as possible, showing the time abruptly changing at the end of the Local Forecast. I have been awake for every time change since, now over a decade’s worth. This particular trip, Dad and I stayed at what was he Econo Lodge on US-131 on the south side of Petoskey. Unfortunately at the time of the time change itself, the laptop did not cooperate. This particular clip features “Main Titles” from the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride”.This was the first time I was able to revisit the Petoskey XL and record it with a TV tuner as opposed to a camera, since discovering it by accident around Labor Day 2008. I had no idea The Weather Channel was going to air Halloween-themed music on the local forecasts until I had gotten settled in the hotel room in Petoskey. The selection of songs was rather limited, and only continued until 23:00 Eastern that evening. I’ve gotten back into watching a lot of old Local Forecast clips lately, and realized there were some either hadn’t uploaded yet or had pulled. Here is a clip of the Weatherstar XL in the resort town of Petoskey, Michigan. I really miss this XL not only because it was known for having missed the basemap update in 2001, but because traveling to Petoskey made me fall in love with the town and nearby Harbor Springs. Weatherstar XL #2920 on what was then Charter Communications (now Spectrum, though same company) was discovered by accident when I decided to record and upload clips of it through my camera for Labor Day 2008, less than a week before I got my first TV tuner. Dad and I had a tradition of traveling up to northern lower Michigan, staying at a hotel the night before, and walking the Mackinac Bridge on the morning of Labor Day itself. This clip features “Terminal Frost” by Pink Floyd, from their 1987 studio album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. For whatever reason, this was the local forecast when this song began to resonate with me, and a two-month obsession with the song commenced. No copyright infringement is intended.

On Black Friday 2010, after having shopped at Staples for Black Friday earlier, I learned of a Lake Effect Snow event taking shape in northern Michigan. Wanting to catch clips on a Weatherstar XL, I talked the dad into taking me up to the resort town of Petoskey, Michigan. The event began winding down as we got up there, but I managed to catch several clips with the Lake Effect Snow Warning showing up on the bulletins page. Mine is the only channel to feature Lake Effect Snow Warnings on local forecast recordings. By this time, the Lake Effect Snow Warning has been dropped, but widely scattered snow showers continued in earnest. The snow showers also mixed with rain at times. I really miss this XL not only because it was known for having missed the basemap update in 2001, but because traveling to Petoskey made me fall in love with the town and nearby Harbor Springs. Intellistar 2 Jr - Metamora/Germantown Hills, IL - 01/16/18 1638 CST socool775 2018-05-02 | Caught this at the boyfriend's place. Weather was chilly, but nearly as much so as it had been for the start of the New Year. More videos to come as I am able to reconnect the computer which has the editing software I use.The clip begins with Chris Warren making an awful pun about the name assigned to the winter storm hitting the south at that time.
Lansing Intellistar2 - 12/13/17 6:48 EST socool775 2017-12-13 | Snow from Winter Storm Chloe is headed through the Wolverine state, on its way to fizzle out over Pennsylvania. In its wake, 5-8 inches of the white stuff will be laid down along a path from northern Wisconsin to the Keystone state. After being placed under a Winter Weather Advisory yesterday afternoon, we received an upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning overnight.
