🎬✨“You can be great in a lot of different ways.”
In a sit-down with legendary filmmaker Reginald Hudlin (@reggiehudlin), the man who gave us “House Party,” “Boomerang,” “Marshall,” “The Black Godfather” (Netflix) and comics like “Black Panther Omnibus,” theGrio’s Natasha S. Alford (@natashasalford) asked what encouragement he’d give Black creatives navigating an industry where budgets have tightened and diversity efforts are under fire.
Hudlin’s response? Stay unapologetically you. He pointed to 2025’s wins—from Keke Palmer’s Just One of Them Days to Kendrick Lamar’s record-breaking Super Bowl performance—as proof that Black creativity is not out of style.
“We’re as popular as we’ve ever been,” he said. “Like Miles Davis said, ‘jazz is the music of the day.’ What does today call for? And that’s what we need to be playing. So I think that’s the question for any creative person. Are you saying what needs to be said right now? But are our voices desired on a global basis? Absolutely. Never doubt that.”
Grio Fam, what’s your favorite Reginald Hudlin production or project? And how are you staying motivated to stay creative?
