In sport, it’s common to see athletes typecast as heroes and villains. To create a sense of good vs evil. Storylines are the lifeblood of sports coverage.
Take tennis, for example. There’s only so much one can say about the shape of a player’s forehand, the weight of a serve or the light-footedness of movement. Bringing the characters to life is an important part of selling a sport.
