Lake Hiddenwood State Park is the site of a dam failure. Although locals have been petitioning for years now for the state to rebuild the dam, no rebuilding is planned and nature continues to reclaim the artificial lakebed.
This is where I had a deer, probably a buck, come within a few feet of me. I was flying on the old dam embankment and suddenly I heard heavy hoof falls on the ground on the other side of a thicket, followed by a snort. I never saw the thing, but I was very glad to make it out without a confrontation. Deer can be dangerous when they feel threatened.
Flyover country gets its name from people who never looked down. This is what they missed.
