Sa destruction en 1944 par l’armée allemande prive la région de liaisons maritimes et ferroviaires vitales pour son économie. En 1947, avant d’entreprendre la longue reconstruction définitive de cet ouvrage d’art, une solution provisoire et ambitieuse est trouvée en réalisant le plus grand pont levant d’Europe.Located on the Miramas - L'Estaque line, the turning bridge of Caronte crosses the eponymous canal that connects the pond of Berre with the Mediterranean Sea. Its destruction in 1944 by the German army deprived the region of maritime and rail links vital to its economy.
