David V. KimballJust a casual Adventure Mode playthrough. This video is designed to show off the "full experience" of Super Smash Bros. Melee's flagship single player mode that's captured our collective imaginations for over 20 years now.
Since another video is in the works, I decided to use the footage I'm capturing for it and make this. I have the Melee HD textures enabled (from assets.melee.tv), widescreen gecko code, and an internal resolution upscale of 1920x1584 for full 1080p capture. I also enabled 8x SSAA anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filtering, texture filtering, per-pixel lighting, and scaled EFB copy to make it as pretty as possible.
I did cheat a little bit in editing, so that RNG was on my side. List of things I changed:
- Swapped out the Mario Bros. cutscene with one that doesn't use any recolor costumes (happens when you pick Mario or Luigi) - Replaced the Star Fox segment to ensure an encounter with Falco - Replaced the Kirby section to ensure an encounter with Giant Kirby - Replaced the Ending "Congratulations" segment with my own HD version
I also went out of my way to engage each of the Link battles in Underground Maze, and also waited for Zelda to transform into Sheik before I KO'd her. Yes, it was a little extra, but I wanted to show as much off as I could.
Unfortunately there are some odd quirks with the widescreen gecko code that haven't been fixed yet, mostly obvious in the text alignment and UI issues that show up during the stage clear screens or during the Star Fox cutscenes.
This is the Widescreen code I'm using for Melee 1.02:
If anyone knows of a widescreen code that fixes these issues, please let me know. :)
The other issue is, when having all of those visual settings cranked up super high, there are some serious performance issues during the stage clear screens. I replaced the audio with smoother versions so it doesn't sound choppy, but the video visibly drops frames during those parts. Sorry about that.

Kimball2022-07-05 | Join me as I uncover the secrets behind Super Smash Bros. Melee's insane 100% speedrun category, All Trophies. We'll hear from the category runners, ncb1221, bwells626, and aMSa as they share their experiences from the past several years of running the category.
To solve the mysteries behind this run, we'll examine the category's requirements, dissect the best route, and learn how to shave off time from the runners' best practices. At the end, the current world record holder will share their most clutch moments.
#speedrun #supersmashbros #worldrecordWhat if Melee had EVEN LESS dev time?David V. Kimball2022-04-20 | The most cursed timeline. Lucas instead of Ness. No Fire Emblem characters. Game & Watch cut. No clones. Only 16 characters (17 including Sheik) and only 17 stages.
Today we explore what Melee could have been like in alternative universe where HAL Laboratory and Sakurai only had 8 months of development instead of the 13 months they had (which was already cutting it close).
This video is just speculative, but uses some information we do have about which characters were prioritized, early versions of stages seen at Spaceworld and E3 2001, and some unused assets like the early title screen.

From the Smash 2/Omega moveset, Snake retains a lot of his Brawl animations and moves, while his side Smash would include a melee attack with his missile launcher, and his down Smash would be a more traditional double kick like Ultimate counterpart.
His up B would put him in helpless state rather than being able to act out of it, but he'd be the only character on the roster with the ability to crawl.
His appearance would be based on Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, as 2 would have just released on PlayStation 2.

New items. Super Smash Bros. Melee with 6 more months of development would have added a lot. We can assume this based on how much Sakurai and HAL Laboratory managed to cram into the game in just 13 months already.
For this video, I've combined some research from official sources like the Smabura-Ken websites, with the knowledge we have about what Sakurai would include in future Smash titles, and my own personal speculation to conjure up a more fleshed out version of Melee that keeps the core of the game the same, but adds in previously cut or partially completed content as well as net-new content, illustrating this through the works of many talented Smash Bros. modders.

What if Sakurai's initial platform fighting experiment was released to the public? In its earliest form, it may have played like 4 Captain Falcons.
I used a variety of Melee mods and some video editing trickery to show what a prototype of Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 64 may have looked like if it was released.
Please see the credits and resources below if you'd like to try the mod yourself.
**Please note: I have used some video editing trickery in this video, so the combination of mods below will not produce the result seen in this video to a complete extent.**
Dean Harrington is the voice of the announcer, Master Hand and Crazy Hand in Super Smash Bros. Melee. MelonSpeedRuns and I contacted him in 2016 about doing some recordings for fans, which he agreed to do at no cost. Happy 20th Anniversary to my favorite game of all time, Super Smash Bros. Melee. I hope this tribute video helps share what I love about the game. What if the Ultimate Spacie was in Melee? When Master Hand and Crazy Hand attack Corneria, and manage to take out Great Fox, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, and Peppy Hare, it's up to Slippy Toad to save the rest of team Star Fox from certain doom. Can he do it?
A fully-working version of what's seen in the trailer is not available for download as a pack, although you may browse the linked sources if you'd like. These trailers are just concepts and are meant to be made for fun.
If Earthbound 64 wasn't canceled, and Sakurai decided to move forward on replacing Ness with Lucas, this could have been the result!

Finally, the definitive HD texture pack for Super Smash Bros. Melee's first release is complete. It is compatible with any version of Dolphin, and of course Slippi Online.
1. Download any of the packs. .DDS files are easier for Dolphin to load, with slight loss of quality, and .PNG are lossless. 2. Find your Dolphin/Slippi install location and open it in your file browser. Then, navigate to User, Load, Textures, and make sure a folder called GALE01 is there. This is Melee's game ID, so any textures placed in there will be used. 3. Then, enable custom textures by going to Dolphin/Slippi and clicking Graphics, Advanced tab, and then enabled "Load custom textures." You'll also want to check the "Prefetch Custom Textures" option as well to prevent in-game stuttering. 4. Optionally, you can increase the quality to 1080p. To do this, go to Graphics, the first Enhancements tab, and change Internal Resolution to 3x (1920x1584) for 1080p. You may also increase Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings, but this may affect performance. 5. Optionally you can enable widescreen for Melee. To do this, right click Melee from the game list, select Properties, and then click the Gecko Codes tab. Make sure "Optional: Widescreen 16:9" is enabled. Then, go to Graphics, and under the General tab, change Aspect Ratio from its current option to "Stretch to Window." Then make sure you run the game at full screen by using alt+Enter.

Masahiro Sakurai presented at Game Developers Conference 2004 on "Game Design: Risk and Return." He talked about his philosphy designing games and what makes a game fun. At the end, he had a Q+A section, where attendees were able to ask him questions. Three of them were about Super Smash Bros. Melee, the first one being "What are the high-risk, high-return moves in Melee?" which directly relates to the main point of the talk, describing the relationship between risk and return in games. The second question was "How many newer moves in Melee were the result of deliberate additions versus oversights?" citing wavedashing as an example. The third and final question of the talk was "What was the design process like for Super Smash Bros. Melee?"
Video recording date states this was March 24, 2004.

Dinosaur Planet, eventually Starfox Adventures on GameCube, was a Nintendo 64 title planned for release in 2000, but was canned to become a Starfox game. Oddly, "Sabre's Adventure" features Fox, where he introduces himself as "Fox McCloud from the Lylat System." So this must have been during the transition to when it would become a Starfox game. Very interesting stuff!
I used an Everdrive X7 to run this on original hardware. If you're wondering how to get it to work, download the ROM from archive.org: archive.org/details/dino_20210220 and follow the instructions. Make sure to rename the patched_rom.z64 file to "Dinosaur Planet.z64" and then in your save_db.txt file in your Everdrive directory, make sure to add DP=5 (Dinosaur Planet) and save it.

Almost 20 years later, this video still gives me goosebumps.
This is the full intro video for Super Smash Bros. Melee from 2001 upscaled to 1080p. Since the original cinematic is 4:3, I have provided a full 1920x1458 version, as well as a custom, dynamic crop of a 1920x1080. I've also included the original 460p video in the download also. I decided to keep the footage in 30fps instead of 60fps, aside from the final moments where the menu is shown, which runs at 60fps momentarily. I used Topaz Gigapixel AI to upscale this footage. Each video file was exported with a H.265 HEVC codec in an MP4 container, with an extra version in H.264. Enjoy!

In this video, I give you a tour of my Super Smash Bros. Melee Twitch overlay, including custom Twitch alerts, scenes, and Streamlabs OBS configs. Combining this with Stream Deck, it's a full-featured Melee overlay.
Up-Throw wallpaper created in Wallpaper Engine. Artwork by daveartwork. Depicts a Fox up throw on Marth on Yoshi's Story stage from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Shy Guys appear in front of the stage. I've added a light effect, light rain, and light fog effects.

Very simple tutorial on how to set up your input and output devices for Zoom meetings, Discord calls, and changing Windows 10 defaults for everything else. This works for GoToMeeting, Skype, Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, Slack, WebEx, Google Hangouts, UberConference, Jabber, Amazon Chime, Zoho Meeting, or any other video/audio conferencing application.
Remember to "mute" yourself while you're not speaking to help keep conferences quiet and distraction-free. Background noise from your environment may be audible to others, so keep that in mind. And of course, always remember to unmute before you speak.Twitch Stream Highlight: A presentation about financial well-being + Q&ADavid V.
