Metroid has a certain tone to the games - underground, alone, in an unwelcoming alien environment. The Metroid Suite captures this, blended with the thrills and excitement of making your way through the caves and tunnels, fighting off the hostile creatures, and the victory of making it out alive. I took advantage of some unusual techniques to add to the atmosphere, such as timbral crossfading in post between different instruments, unpredictable rhythmic meter changes, and 12-tone textures to name a few. In keeping with another aspect of what makes Metroid games enjoyable, there are hidden easter eggs throughout this arrangement that can be found on subsequent listenings.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a "walking simulator" by the Chinese Room wherein the player explores a small English village devoid of people and encounters orbs of light that reveal how the village's inhabitants mysteriously vanished. Accompanying this story is a beautiful, award-winning soundtrack by Jessica Curry, including this chorale "Clouds and Starlight." John Robert Matz thought that the choir's warm tones would translate well for brass instruments. We got to play this song live during Magfest in 2019 (during which I recall missing an accidental in the first bar), so it's a pleasure to be able to record and master this tune in its full glory for Brass Effect.

For those who haven't heard of it, Splatterhouse is an arcade beat-em-up from the 80s that received a couple sequels on the Sega Genesis, and a later 3D reimagining. Most of the music in the game is pretty action-oriented, with a lot of odd atonal effects and percussive rhythms. The ending theme, however, stands out as this somber, melodic dirge, and was something I had wanted to arrange long before this album was even a thought up.Everyone on Brasslevania got a solo moment at some point, and Ken "HatVGM" Crouch is featured here on trumpet during the first statement of the main melody. But before that, there's two other references to the game: this track opens up with a bunch of brass cacophony that is my attempt at "arranging" the sound effect made when you defeat the final boss (which is apparently called "Hell-Chaos (Death)" on the OST), and right after that is a short statement of the "Continue" music from the game.Brass don't always have to be big and boisterous, and though they will have that moment in this piece, it's also a rare chance to experience their gentler, more emotional timbres.

We had the more popular Castlevania track Bloody Tears slated from the start, and then when I reached out to the band for further suggestions, John Stacy specifically asked for Voyager, the ending theme from the original Castlevania. The track got added in, not just as another brass arrangement, but specifically as a feature for John Stacy, our premier horn player and specialist in the low end of the French horn. This track, like other sections of Brasslevania, explores the low range of the horn, something I hadn't really done much prior to this album, but we'll get a chance to hear the immense range of the horn throughout the entire arrangement. Since we arranged the Main Theme from Monkey Island several years ago, we wanted to focus on the villain, LeChuck, this time. Using LeChuck's theme as a basis for the arrangement, I was able to work in several "drunken" trombone solos amid the campy oom-pah brass textures. It was also a great excuse to play some more theremin to add that ghastly extra touch to the arrangement!

What made the most sense would be arranging probably the most heard tracks from the most popular game in the series. “Field of Expel,” one of two overworld themes from Star Ocean: The Second Story, is a heavy, plodding, yet still triumphant and adventurous, piece basically tailor-made for a brass ensemble, making it an easy pick for the full force of our nine-piece band.The original track goes through about four different sections, the latter two maybe less familiar to most players (since you usually don’t spend enough time on the map to hear them), so we don’t spend as much time arranging those sections. Instead, halfway through, the band enters the game’s incredibly fierce, high-energy battle theme, “Stab the Sword of Justice.” The two themes are harmonically similar enough that we’re able to bring them together near the end for one final, epic conclusion, with the entire track closing out with the game’s battle clear fanfare, “Strike Your Mind.”

We squeeze a lot of variation by treating the melody in various styles, from a lyrical solo treatment to a more triumphant fanfare… and also by sneaking in another Sonic music quote near the end!

For this updated version, we re-recorded all the parts, and that plus improvements in our mixing and mastering really helped this new recording shine! Speaking of Brass Effect, we'll have an update about that very soon! *eyes emoji*Protoss 3 is a background theme in StarCraft for the Protoss race, which is categorized by intelligence and longevity. The original piece is over 5 minutes and consists of melodic motives as well as ambient sound effects. As such, it was a tricky piece to arrange, but adding a second horn (JohnStacy) to our quintet opened up a lot of possibilities! I was heavily inspired by music from the late Romantic period - particularly Gustav Holst's the Planets and Paul Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis. Hope you enjoy the journey! End of briefing.

Composed by Robin Beanland, the music is reminiscent of the exciting and epic themes of the space movies that came before it. I've been waiting many years for an excuse to do a live transcription, and finally it presented itself! Originally orchestrated with strings in mind, Thomas Kresge chimed in and re-orchestrated many of the string parts for a larger brass ensemble including two French horns and two trombones. The piece opens with a trailer-like intro before the main theme appears, only to fade into a dark musical battle, which culminates in the glorious reemergence of the victorious main theme as a finale!

Our arrangement of “Pokey Means Business” begins with a chromatic buzz, swelling and fading, climbing and falling as members of our brass ensemble stagger entrances. In the original version of the song, the following section blossomed into a furious 8-bit toccata. However, with the nature of brass tending toward long harmonies, we wanted to expand upon the Baroque chord structure and open it up for more harmonic possibilities, substituting the original cadences with some that offer more complexity.Then begins the steady, horrific descent into madness. Drum fills and horn rips usher us to a truly brutal B section. A mixture of fast thrash rhythms ensue, encumbered by eight string guitars and high-gain fury, pushing the battle to its grittiest climactic moments. Meanwhile evocative muted brasses provide complimentary melodic material fitting for the rise of Master Porky.All hail the pig!

I have a lot of fond memories playing the Lost Planet series with my brothers, so when I found out the theme for Brass Effect this was one of the first themes to come to mind. I was a little skeptical when arranging this that it would effectively reduce from large orchestra to a brass ensemble, but as notes began to fall on paper I became more and more encouraged. The players over at the Game Brass really put the finishing touches on this arrangement and brought it to life. I feel their performance is every bit as epic and captivating the original it is derived from. With that, I hope you enjoy the Main Theme from Lost Planet!

I played this game obsessively as a child and the music has always stuck with me. I've wanted to arrange for a while and jumped at the opportunity to play with it while arranging for The Game Brass. The first stage in the game is a sandy planet and the track that plays is appropriately called "Sand Storm." The serious idea was treating the melody with large, grandiose space by drawing from the American Minimalists, specifically John Adams. I thought it’d be a fun challenge to turn the minimalist electronic soundtrack into something snazzy enough for the Game Brass! The groove of the battle theme from Rockmen sectors of FTL gave me a great idea: to reimagine that groove and the track’s other themes as a hot swing tune. It was a lot trickier than I thought it’d be! Still, I think it’s a fitting tribute to the amazing music of Ben Prunty and an indie gem that soaked up many well-spent hours. Enjoy!

The further you get into the game, the more intense and dramatic the theme becomes as a signal of just how much danger Sora, Donald, and Goofy are truly in as they prepare to face off against Ansem. I wanted to mimic the in-game evolution of the "Blast Away" theme in my own arrangement, and opted for many different tonal and textural shifts to achieve this level of tension. Just like in "Kingdom Hearts" our heroes eventually prevail over the darkness, and as the dust begins to settle different parts of the theme slowly meld together, eventually building into a triumphant fanfare to greet the trio and celebrate their success.

This kind of sparseness is perfect fodder for arranging, and I started out by creating four different versions of the opening title, with the intention of using just one… though, after some coaxing, ended up just including them all! We start with a near copy of the original: solo instruments play over the top of a drone. I lean into medieval-style harmony by having the quintet replay the melody in parallel 5ths, before expanding out to a more modern reharmonization.Halo’s main theme is one of the few that I think has actively expanded with each new game, and at this point I would consider the “One Final Effort” motif from Halo 3 to be a core part of this series’s title music. Not to mention, it’s a perfect big brass fanfare. But maybe the most beloved part is the 12/8 jig that always follows the opening chant. Once played with strings, then guitars, then piano, we finally get a chance to hear this brought to life with BRASS. Fast lines and busy melodies originally intended for, admittedly, more agile instruments make this one of the most challenging pieces the Game Brass has performed, but I’m happy to say that everyone worked hard to bring this complex piece of music to life.

I feel like the horn section in the game represents the voices of the guardians - so many heroic moments in the game were accented by them, so I knew we had to give it our own take. It was really hard to narrow down which piece I would arrange. I played a lot more of Destiny 1 than I have of 2 (a lot of which was played with our logo designer Henry and his partner), so I was leaning toward something from the original game. Since Sepiks Prime has turned into a recurring enemy, and the track is honestly such a blast, it became the easy choice (plus I cheated a bit and quoted The Traveler off the top). Other almost-chosen tracks include Untold Legends, End of the Line, and Eye of the Gate Lord. So what about the arrangement? Well in Destiny 1 the original piece is very orchestral, and in Destiny 2 it's very metal - so I thought: why can't we have both at the same time? We're always so pleased to collab with Ro Panuganti, and of course it made sense musically because we needed somebody to take on some of the weirder extended rhythm bits and arpeggios that aren't very idiomatic to brass playing. One of my favourite things about collaborating with Ro is that it's not just a contribution of a performance or a recording, we talk through not only the arrangement, but also the video. We send edits back and forth to one another, and I feel like Thomas and Ro have really made a dynamic and exciting edit.When I first set out to arrange this I was a bit worried that it would come out too flat or boring, since the original piece is repetitive with a sort of verse-chorus-verse-chorus thing going on. Moving the different parts around the different brass players and having dynamic performances from both Rahul (drum) and Ro really brought things to life. I couldn't be happier with how this turned out.I leave you with the immortal words of the O.G. (original ghost) Peter Dinklage:That wizard came from the moon.

This arrangement is a euphonium feature starring Abigail Lannan (GoofyEuph) and Jordan Moore. Not too long ago, GoofyEuph had a hysterical viral video tweet in which she "blasted off into space" playing this theme on euphonium against a green-screened background. The beginning of this arrangement pays homage to that tweet; turns out when she arrived in space, there were many brass-playing friends around!Other than that, I did my best to stay faithful to the source material (including the original mixed meter time signature; I know people care a lot about that) while adding a few personal touches and flourishes to highlight what brass instruments -- especially euphonium -- can do. The timpani helped add some extra bite and rhythmic interest, and it felt apt to include the theremin, an instrument that I've always associated with mystery, to represent Deoxys, the mythical Pokémon from outer space.Prominent opponents in Pokémon often have multiple themes that share motivic ideas - often an an encounter theme that is somewhat slow(er), and a battle theme that is faster and more aggressive. I do enjoy that concept, so I decided to start off by writing a slow introduction to Deoxys' battle, somewhat inspired by a villainous march, but taking a lot of influence from theme of the Plasma Frigate Deck in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. This motif incorporates Team Plasma's theme, which, funnily enough, shares an interesting trait with Deoxys' theme - both follow a statement of the theme with an immediate restatement in a key that's a semitone above, which helped fit it in!Lots of boss fights also feature an escalated version of theme once the opponent is down to their final Pokémon - this prompted me to attempt something similar after one pass through the theme. This time, through the use of Team Plasma's theme, I started to incorporate changing meters, which helped add to the goal of making the last section feel like the final and decisive climax of the battle, which itself is the big finale to the Delta Episode. I also incorporated several nods to Zinnia and her role in the story, through the arpeggio figures in the horn that start and end the mixed meter sections, as well as the final melody in the theremin.I'm really honored to have been able to arrange this for The Game Brass, and really happy with how it turned out! I'd like to thank everyone on The Game Brass for bringing me onto this project and making this happen!

I had never written for brass before —except for a short quintet I did as an assignment in college— and selected an octet after some deliberation. I enjoyed exploring the textures made possible by these instruments and have gained quite a deep, newfound appreciation for chamber brass! This piece was also an exercise in form, as I wanted to turn Gusty Garden into a narrative adventure that spanned beyond the initial themes from the game.The first section of the piece runs through the form from the original piece, manifesting in its 3 distinct themes, playing with textural combinations of the octet along the way. It is in the original key of Db. The middle section joyfully departs from the main Gusty Garden form to play with other themes from the game, referencing the aesthetic of the Viennese Waltz. Gusty Garden re-enters to join this texture, using a 3/4 variation of its first theme, which is also contrapuntally rewritten to layer seamlessly as a countermelody. Following the conclusion of the waltz, and after a quieter and more solemn visitation to the second theme, the final section returns to the fanfaric third theme after a playful circular modulation to the key of Eb, a whole-step upward from the original key.Before concluding with the famous “bVI - bVII - I” chord progression ever-present in the Mario franchise, the resolution is subverted into a coda rife with interplay between the various instruments, continuously punctuating itself with variations of the triplet intro phrase from the start of the piece. The coda is based on the chord progression “I - iv”, which is at times culturally associated with outer space.The final three chords of the piece again subvert the resolution of “bVI - bVII - I”, instead first landing on a bII, then pulling towards a striking bI#15 (or Ebbmaj13 with an added Eb) and then finally resolving on I, the tonic chord.This piece represents a lot of my compositional growth in many areas, and it was incredibly fulfilling to arrange this for The Game Brass. It's the first time I've heard my music played by a dedicated ensemble, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I also owe my progress on this piece to my composition teacher, Dr. Benjamin Wallace (aka DrThrex), who has ever been a guiding hand on my journey to elevate my musical development.
