Atari ST 16 Color Graphics Slideshow Marin Balabanov 2023-01-22 | Under normal conditions, the Atari ST could only display 16 colors out of a palette of 512 available colors. Even though this does not sound like much, this classic 16-bit machine was capable of producing some beautiful graphics.This is a slideshow of 16 color images. I did not create them myself, rather these are images generated by Midjourney AI that I converted to the ST color palette and resolution using RetroSpecs on the iPad.The music is by Ultrasyd.
From Sketch to Realistic Painting with Midjourney AI Marin Balabanov 2023-01-22 | In the past two months I sketched and rendered 15 pictures in ProCreate and Infinite Painter on the iPad Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. I could have saved myself the work.Just making a quick sketch and uploading it to Midjourney gets much better results much fast.I sketched the original line drawing and uploaded it to the Midjourney Discord. Then I copied the image link and fed it into Midjourney with /imagine prompt:image-path.png --ar 3:2 (the last bit is for the proportions and orientations).When Midjourney produced four versions, I told it to upscale the one that I liked and then fed that into Midjourney again. It looks like there were a lot of folks testing out Midjourney because the service was quite busy and took a while to finish but around 15 to 20 minutes after the first render, I got a really good hyper-realistic dude smiling kindly at the onlooker. And... A quick web search disproves this of course, but I like the sentiment that only another person can see this gentleman's technicolor yawn.I am a big fan of the work of Sam Keith. This figure is inspired by his Mr. Gone with some liberties taken. I know that there is no way that this stream of rainbow vomit actually comes out of this gentleman's stomach. After two works using Infinite Painter on Android, I returned to the comfort of ProCreate on the iPad Pro. In the meantime, I had been invited to join the DarkArtwork Reddit, so I decided, I'd paint something specifically for #DarkArtwork. I paged through some of the other works on the Reddit and really loved the scary, crazy, meticulously crafted pieces. Frankly, I was a bit concerned that my style would not really fit in with the other works. After getting a lot of inspiration from the works of other, I decided to give it a shot with a painting in black and white. I wanted to make something like a disgusting, lovecraftian Mount Rushmore with faces fused together and either hands or tentacles emerging from their split heads. I sketched out rough outlines to get the feeling for the available space and the distribution of the figures. On a new layer, I then started the detailed rendering of the outlines in pen. I would also take the opportunity to make corrections to the initial sketch. Once I was happy with the outline, I spot the black areas. I could now hide the original sketch layer. On a new layer beneath the line drawing, I filled the gray that would be the main color of this painting. Then I added a background layer and put in some shades of gray and white and used the blur and motion blur filters to makethem look atmospheric. On gray layer under the line art, I put in two shades of gray for more depth and added highlights in light gray. I was preparing this layer of shading for the next stage of smearing the tones to blend them. Using the smudge tool, I blended the shades on this layer. I worked at a relatively high zoom level. While looking at the details and working on the blending, I'd occasionally add highlights or dark tones for depth and then smear those in. Even though I paused the blending because I felt that I was done for now, I knew that I would need to get back to the gray layer at a later time. I returned to the la er with the line art outlines and started blending them and correcting thrm with the smudge tool. Every now and then, I'd move the lines thus shifting them to no longer match thr gray shading on the layer below, so I'd need to return to the gray shading layer and "push" the shaded area to match the outline above with the smudge tool. Once I thought, I had blended the line art, I moved to a new layer (of course I had missed some lines and had to return to them later). On this new layer I started adding more highlights and shades. This time round they were more subtlr and I would repeatedly stroke over certain highlights that I wanted to accentuate because I had set the brush to 30% opacity, There were only two stages left: Firstly, I'd go back and forth between layer making tweaks and corrections here and there. And lastly, I painted the pupils onto the eyes only at the very end because I didn't want them staring at me eerily while I was working on other parts. After a final polish, I was done. And exported the inage and the timelapse video.

Painting a Strange Creature with Infinite Painter on Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (Timelapse) Marin Balabanov 2023-01-07 | This painting of a strange duckbilled creature is my first attempt at using Infinite Painter on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with the S-Pen. Painter is a really smooth experience that comes close to ProCreate.The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite might be one of the affordable Android tablets but Painter runs on it like a charm. The S-Pen is a bit skinny in the hand but it feels great. The soft tip feels a bit better than an Apple Pencil (overall I still prefer the Pencil).I feel that Infinite Painter is the closest you will get to ProCreate on an Android device. There is also a version for the iPad. The price differs by region but it is really low for such a powerful application. There is a vector-based companion app called Infinite Designer. I will give that a try on occasion.I'm still trying to get a hang of the smudge tool but I'm loving the experience so far. I started out analog and made a rough sketch with pencil on paper, then inked the outlines. I then rendered the contours with ink. As the final analog step I hatched and shaded the picture. Then I scanned it and continued work on my iPad Pro in ProCreate. I placed only the black lines of ink scan on a separate layer. This took a bit of fiddling to get more dynamic line widths.
