Moving £6,000,000 worth of sand to Rhos on Sea Sweetie 2013-03-31 | Dredging £6,000,000 worth of sand from the sea bed and pumping it ashore between Rhos on Sea & Colwyn Bay - North WalesWORK has started on raising beach levels by laying more than 500,000 tonnes of sand on a popular beach as part of an £81m flood defence strategy.The first load of sand was pumped ashore from an offshore dredger through a specially constructed steel pipeline to the beach in front of the new Porth Eirias watersports centre at Colwyn Bay yesterday lunchtime.It's part of Conwy County Council's Waterfront project which is providing sea defences and improvements in Colwyn Bay.Mike Priestley, the council's cabinet member for highways, environment and sustainability, said: "It's a vital part of the coast protection work that is taking place along the promenade, but will provide a marvellous, permanent beach, which will be a great asset for Colwyn Bay."The £6m sand importation is funded by Welsh Government as part of the sea defence work, and will also provide a beach which will be available at both high and low tide.Two steel pipes, one a kilometre long, the other about 400m long were floated out at high tide last Thursday, lined up and welded together. The pipeline was connected to the steel dry-line which is pumping the sand onto the beach.A rubber floater line was also connected to the sea end of the steel pipeline, and this section of pipe will connect to the dredger taking the sand from the sea bed approximately 20 miles north of Colwyn Bay, before sailing to Colwyn Bay where it anchors a kilometre offshore.The operation will take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week for up to four weeks.
