There had long been an intention to shoot a video for this piece on the Detroit People Mover itself. As production got under way, it was apparent that the typically empty train has a peculiar resonance with the desolation settling on urban areas across the world. Director Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman explores our new-found isolation on a driver-less journey through the city, contrasting it with human contact in images from Detroit’s history produced by an correspondingly autonomous printer.
This bleak urban portrait serves as a drastic contrast to Squarepusher’s last visual representation for ‘Terminal Slam’, which with its bustling street scenes was shot just three months before, including at the busiest crossing in the world in Shibuya. These varied aesthetics not only reflect the sudden change of conditions but two very different sound worlds that co-exist within this project.
“I like the way both of these videos articulate salient points about our urban environments - in ‘Terminal Slam’ about the prevalence of advertising and possibilities for its subversion, and here regarding our zombie cities that despite the lack of everyday human contact continue marching on. The track itself is part of a series begun in 1993 inspired by the music of Detroit.” – Squarepusher
‘Detroit People Mover’ features on Squarepusher’s new album ‘Be Up A Hello’, and new EP ‘Lamental’, both available now.

Visuals: Black Box EchoSquarepusher - Vortrack [Fracture Remix] (Official Audio)Squarepusher2019-11-20 | ‘Be Up A Hello’, out 31 January 2020 on Warp | http://squarepusher.net
After a 5 year hiatus, Squarepusher returns with ‘Be Up A Hello’, released 31 January as First Edition Vinyl LP, CD and digital formats. Ahead of the album, a double A-side ‘Vortrack’ 12" will be released on 6 December, featuring the album track and Squarepusher’s own 'Fracture' remix - first dropped during his brain-melting breakbeat and jungle set for the WXAXRXP x NTS takeover in June. Both tracks are available to hear now.
‘Be Up A Hello’ sees Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher) return to using a bewildering array of vintage analogue and digital hardware, the same equipment that first helped him develop his sound in the early '90s. Something of a 180 degree turn, these synths, effects units and even a Commodore Vic20 are in complete contrast to the tools he used to create 2015’s ‘Damogen Furies’ - cutting edge software that Tom developed over the course of 15 years.
The result is an album of rinsing breakbeat floor fillers, pieces loaded with visceral atmosphere and melody, and darker moments that illustrate Squarepusher’s continuing fascination with finely balanced psychological overload. As such, ‘Be Up A Hello’ gives a nod to the mayhem, joyousness and abandon of the DIY Essex rave scene that was a strong determinant in Tom Jenkinson's work.

This experiment is based on 'cymatics' - the study of visible sound and vibration. Typically, the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane is vibrated, and regions of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible in a thin coating of particles, paste, or liquid (in this case a mixture of cornstarch and water). Different patterns emerge in the medium depending on the geometry of the plate and the driving frequency.

"Thank you to everyone who entered the competition, the response has been overwhelming. Had I known it would generate this much good music representing such a varied range of approaches, I'd have abandoned the concept of having a single winner. However, that was the basis of the competition, so a winner it must have...
I didn't have a criteria in mind, I just checked them all out as I would any other music. In the end, the Bacalao remix won because it was a proper rollercoaster ride and put a big smile on my face! There were many other favourites, the Pyrate and Yoshimitsu Tsunaki remixes also stood out and are indicative of the variety and high standard of the entries. Overall, big up to everyone, it's been emotional. Tom."

Squarepusher on Dark Steering: "For a while I had apocalyptic nightmares about trails of nuclear missiles in the night sky. So I aimed to recreate that strange combination of exhilaration, terror and sadness both visually and emotionally through this piece. It lead to the idea of a spacecraft leaving earth at vast speed to escape, but oddly the music also made me think of it flying through a library. So I generated the visual aspect such that, as the piece progresses, it seems as if the viewer is ever accelerating through massive corridors of books."
