Opeth - Blackwater Park - drum cover Dylan Watson 2024-02-02 | Blackwater Park by Opeth What can I say ? It's one of the greatest songs ever created... I've been listening to this album since I was 12 or 13 years old. It was recommended to me by a French teacher in school if I recall correctly. Loved the album the second I started listening to it and my love only grew with years. As you know I'm a huge fan of Opeth, especially Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries and Watershed. Those are the albums I listened the most. The more I listen to them the more I realize how genius they are. Also absolutely love the production of this album. It's authentic, unique and organic. If you listen closely to the beginning of this song, every snare hit is different. It just feels so real. Also worth to mention that even though I didn't cover anything from him directly I'm a huge fan of Steven Wilson. And I can really feel his contribution in this album which makes it even better. And of course nothing but respect to Martin Lopez. He played drums on some of the best songs of all time, with touch, finesse and power. He has been and continues to be a huge inspiration for me as a drummer and I can't wait to cover more of his stuff. He is a brilliant musician. As often with these Opeth drum covers, a little tear drops at the end. I honestly don't know what it is that I feel at the end of those covers. But playing songs like that is too intense and the emotion has to come out one way or another and it's often tears. This music feels pretty overwhelming to me and when I play those songs it just comes out like that. I changed a couple things with the sound of my drums and I think this is by far my best sounding one. I'm very very happy with how it sounds. I hope you'll notice it and like it. As most of you know I'm a huge Watershed fan and I love what Martin Axenrot created on this album. The main beat of the song, the ending fills and the whole groovy vibe is so much fun to play. I had a blast learning this and I hope you'll like it ! This is my 7th Opeth cover on Youtube and 4th from this album. There is so much energy and groove in it it's insane. I started listening to five magics a lot for some reason and decided to learn it. The left foot hi hat thing in the beginning was a very good exercise to practice and the whole song was just a lot of fun. I'll try to do more from this album as soon as I can cause I really dig it. Drum Solo Dylan Watson 2023-11-06 | Hello everyone. I improvised a drum solo to start my session the other day. I felt pretty uninspired lately and struggled a lot to put out some meaningful content on my channel. This drum solo video changed that for me.I felt like I was stuck as a drummer. I didn't feel much progress lately. I haven't been practicing the way I used to and I felt like I didn't progress at all. This solo made me realize that despite this feeling I still grew as a musician. I feel more musical, more confident and I can create with a lot more flow than I used to. I practiced a lot of rudiments and a lot of patterns and I still improvised a lot every time I got behind the kit. I actually feel pretty happy about this solo and that is pretty new for me. This is one of the toughest covers I've done so far. Very happy I still decided to go the distance with this one. A lot of work, sweat and frustration went into this. Still a very fun song to play once the parts are figured out. There are still a couple things I couldn't comprehend but I managed to improvise a bit here and there to not actually go completely mad. I had the chance to meet the whole band a couple weeks ago. I played with my band Kassogtha right before their set in a festival called Gränichen. The whole band is incredible on stage and off stage. Had a great time meeting them and chatting with the incredible Ali Richardson who has been a huge inspiration for years now. Fantastic people and fantastic show. Discovered it when I was like 14 or 15 years and it was the first one I've heard from Gojira after seeing the youtube "Live at vieilles charrues". As most of you know Mario Duplantier is one of my biggest inspiration ever. His creativity, power and play style never ceases to amaze me. He is truly one of the greatest Metal drummers of all time. I loved to just jam this song and the other day I tried to figure out all the fills at the end just for fun. Turns out there are a lot of very cool linear drum fills in this song. I suck at linear drumming so this was great practice. I'm still pretty bad at it but still wanted to post it as this is the first and only take I did for this song. To me it's one of the greatest if not the greatest thrash Metal album of all time. Rust in peace is really incredible for a lot of reasons. The drumming by Nick Menza is unbelievable and has this drive that's really unique. It's a very inspiring album for me. I hope I'm not the only one here who thinks Megadeth is the best band of the big four but I'll say it anyways :') I decided also to do a completely new drum mix and I changed a couple things on the video aspect as well and I'm super happy with the result. Still a couple things to change with the snare drum especially but I'm happy with the overall result. I used to watch Adult Swim so much when I was younger and was so happy there was a death metal show on there. Always lots of fun watching this. Then I started really diving deep into their actual music and I still listen to the band a lot. I'm a big fan of Dethalbum III so I'm really excited about Dethalbum IV. The drummer of the band is Gene Hoglan who is an absolute legend among Metal drummers. His patterns have inspired me for years and years and this song doesn't disappoint. I learned it and filmed it the same day. It was a tough challenge. Quite a long hard working week end for me between the new Cannibal Corpse and this one. But super happy and super proud I did it. I'm really happy with this performance I have to say. My hands hurt, I'm tired and dehydrated but overall super happy. Started listening to them a year ago now and I'm really hooked to their music. There's just something about it that I really love. As you can see there's only one camera angle today. I am still trying to blame the camera for not recording but I'm actually pretty sure I just forgot to press the button cause I'm a bit dumb... But that's ok. My whole philosophy with Cannibal Corpse drum covers is to keep it simple and raw. I had a difficult time making this cover to be honest. Paul's drumming is very very hard to recreate and to cover. I missed plenty of details and there's a lot of small changes I made to make it easier for me. Hope you'll still enjoy this cover despite everything I mentioned. I'm a bit hungover and super tired and been here since 11 am to set up my drums and it's currently 8pm. Long day learning this song but I had a lot of fun ! It was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Everybody on that tour was incredible ! We used to set up my drums while Veil of Maya were soundchecking. You can't imagine how inspiring it was for us to see these amazing musicians perform everyday. Sam is not only a killer drummer but a super nice and humble guy as well. He taught me so much during this tour. It was amazing to learn from him during these 3 weeks. The band was playing that song everyday during the soundcheck and I started to learn a bit of the accents and structure of the song during the tour. When we got back home I started listening to it on repeat. I decided to try it and almost got the full song in an hour. Only problem was that riff at 1:52. That took me way longer. I'm actually really happy with this cover. I think it looks and sounds better than anything I did before. As always no edits or whatsoever so definitely kept a couple mistakes and imprecisions here and there. But happy with the overall result. I had no plans of recording a drum cover yesterday but I was listening to this song when I arrived at my practice place and I just went for it. I had so much fun learning this song. It took me about an hour to learn the song. Some parts were really tricky but really clever and fun to play. Also that breakdown at the end drives me nuts and I cracked another cymbal again :'( I'm so happy about the result of this video. I know a lot of the recent subscribers are here after Craig's reaction to my guillotine cover. I hope this video doesn't disappoint. Also planning to do some other songs from the latest album. Absolutely love Adult Swim in general and Metalocalypse is amazing. I discovered them through the show but when you look more closely into the line up you realize how sick this band really is. Absolutely fantastic musicians. Dethalbum III is by far my favorite album from the band. This song has a very powerful atmosphere. I played it a couple times for fun and decided to go with a full cover. Honestly there isn't much to learn this song's structure is really easy. But the atmosphere is insane and the double bass is absolutely great. The tom parts are mostly improvised. I couldn't figure out precisely what was going on but just let my stick flow with some kind of flam rudiments and dynamics. I hope you'll like it ! I've been listening to that album since I was a teenager. Septicflesh is one of the few bands of my teenage years that I still listen to very frequently. I think they managed to stay relevant through the years and always provide excellent albums. I saw them a long time ago in my hometown and twice more after that. Last time was very recent and I finally met one of my drum heroes Krimh. It was incredible to meet him as he is super humble and kind. I told him I would attempt one of the songs on the new album which I'm still planning to do but didn't have time yet to learn one. So I decided to go with this one that I used to play years ago. Had so much fun doing this cover. It was very spontaneous. Just practiced a couple minutes to remember all the parts and learn a couple details and just did one take. I'm very happy with the result. This whole album and band in general is killer. But after discovering the album "Torture" everything changed. I started being obsessed with this band after one listen to that album. I started watching documentaries about them, watched the studio videos they released and I now have nothing but respect and admiration for these musicians.Cannibal Corpse are extremely talented and their impact on the genre is huge. I now understand why people love them so much. They are absolutely incredible. I highly recommend checking this album. Every song is sick ! The performance on this cover is a bit weird. I didn't really learn the song correctly. I learned it in about 20 minutes and decided to set up my cameras and go for it. Don't get me wrong I listened to the song I don't know how many times before learning it on the drums so that made the process easier and quicker. But I wanted to keep a very natural approach for this cover and play it by feel rather than learning every detail. So you'll definitely hear some mistakes and all but I hope you'll enjoy this one. I started learning the intro as a challenge and practiced it a bit these past few days. I found the strength after a long day of drumming to learn the rest of the song. I didn't think at all I'd be filming and recording today but I'm so happy I did. It's 2am as I'm writing this description and have been working since 11:30 on a Sunday, dehydrated and sleep deprived but it was all worth it. I think it's one of my favorite cover I ever did. So much raw energy in this song. I have to say I'm ultra excited about this one for many reasons. First of all because of the song itself. The Gift of Guilt is an absolutely wonderful song from one of the greatest album of all time in my opinion. The drums alway felt like an unreachable challenge. The drum fills by Mario Duplantier on this one are crazy. Took quite a lot of practice to get there but very happy with how it turned out.Second of all I changed completely the look and sound of this video. I wanted to do this for a long time but felt quite shy to do it. I started playing around with the lights I had and found this disposition way better. It's a bit less harsh than before, a bit easier on the eyes I would say. Also I started doing the mixing from scratch and got a lot of help from my friend and bandmate Mortimer Baud. He knows way more about mixing than I do so I'm hoping to learn from him as much as possible and constantly improve the sound of my videos ! Be sure to check out our band Kassogtha linked below.
