Somerset Man Walking 2025-09-01 | I take a look inside Aveline's Hole, a cave at the foot of the Mendip Hills.Aveline's Hole is a cave at Burrington Combe in the limestone of the Mendip Hills. The earliest scientifically dated cemetery in Britain was found at Aveline's Hole. The human bone fragments it contained, from about 21 different individuals, are thought to be between roughly 10,200 and 10,400 years old.A series of inscribed crosses found on the wall of the Aveline's Hole cave are believed to date from the early Mesolithic period just after the Ice Age. The pattern is said to be comparable with others known from Northern France, Germany and Denmark." A gate has been installed in the cave to protect the engraving, after consultations between English Heritage and other interested parties, including the landowner and English Nature.
THE MENDIP HILLS, HMS Starfish Decoy site Somerset Man Walking 2025-09-30 | "HMS Starfish" is a confusing query for a Mendip Hills Starfish site because the term "Starfish" refers to a WWII bombsight decoy program that mimicked the city of Bristol in the Mendip Hills using lights, fires, and special effects. There are no HMS (Her Majesty's Ship) Starfish connections to these sites; rather, the decoy site was named for the overall program. While the effectiveness of the Mendip site is debated, the Starfish program overall diverted thousands of bombs from actual cities, saving many lives.

Wrington Vale Light Railway Explained Part 1 Somerset Man Walking 2025-08-08 | In This Video i take on an almost impossible task of retracing the Wrington Vale Light Railway that opened in 1901 and partly closed in 1958 and fully closed in 1963 along with its bigger line the Cheddar Valley line (the strawberry line). in Part one i try and explain where it left Congresbury Station and heads toward Wrington. The video ends at Iwood lane where there was a level Crossing. Part 2 yet to be filmed is far more walkable and i have much more local knowledge and Land owners permissions. The old line is very important to me as my Father was Born at Burrington Station House, a Station along the line. Him and his Siblings were named the Railway Children.
