Magic Rays of Light television song on 1938 HMV 905 andyvalve100 2021-01-30 | In August 1936 the new regular public television service from the BBC that was due to start in November of that year, was demonstrated to the public ahead of time, at the Radio Olympia technology exhibition. This song about television is from that show and it is seen here on my own 1938 HMV 905 television set. I apologise for the fact that my smartphone keeps zooming in and going out of focus every time it sees a face, there seems to be no way of disabling it. I must try it with another camera in future.

Southgate Jubilee Carnival 1931 andyvalve100 2012-10-04 | Southgate Jubilee Celebrations, September 26th 1931The Southgate featured here is the London Suburb and indeed it was while working in the area a few years back that I found this film amongst things being thrown away in a company clearout.I need to find someone to transfer this film professionally. The film is a little bit fragile. This transfer was done some time ago by pointing a camera at a wall! The auto iris of the video camera did not help matters. Anyway, I hope you can enjoy it.

I'm speaking quite slowly on this one because I've not had this camera apart before, so I am concentrating on the actual repair, rather than the video. The new display was a 'B' grade replacement (slight defects at the edges) and cost me only £20 including all the tools that you see me using.

These clock systems were once common on large industrial sites. This one comes from an old strowger telephone exchange and once controlled the tariff equipment to change the call charged depending on the time of day.
strowger exchange pre-2000 final selector andyvalve100 2010-04-09 | Movie of the pre-2000 type final selector working 506 is dialied to call the black wooden 221 phone which you can see on the right of the exchange (1st digit dealt with on upper rack). This is part of my collection of old GPO strowger equipment. Actually this final selector comes from a PAX and is one of two I own from the same PAX, but I have not found out where they came from. It differs slightly from standard GPO practice. It has a recall holding feature common with PAX equipment, but it uses earth testing rather than the battery testing found in later PAX equipment.

These were used in strowger telephone exchanges to produce the call progress tones, you can hear these in the video.This is part of my collection of old GPO strowger equipment. This machine is unusually old and it is rare to find one still painted grey (they had a short life, later ones were light straw yellow).

The selector was originally made in 1935 by Western Electric but was extensively modified in the 1960's for STD working and for working in an extended UAX12.The number 261 is dialed, the selector drops back after the first digit (digit absorption with discrimination), then steps up 6 levels and rotates to the first contact to ring the phone.Part of my collection of old GPO strowger equipment

The Dutch TV system must have been destitute at this stage as the camera equipment was well out of date by the time the film was made, also the studio is tiny (they're even painting the next set in the corner of the studio). The picture standard was 625 line though, so it wasn't all out of date.
