Once Gold Vent started, it and High did not pause or weaken until the eruption. The eruption began with two large surges in Upper Mortar, followed shortly by a simultaneous start of Lower Mortar, Main Vent, and East Vent.

We'd been waiting for days, and it finally erupted backlit by the last light of the sunset with almost no wind. Afterwards, several of us went back to the Strasser's room for wine and celebration. Little did we know that we'd need to be up in the morning for Giant.I learned almost everything I know about Fan and Mortar from Paul and Suzanne's article in volume 1 of the GOSA Transactions.

Named for ranger Charles Phillips, this was one of four springs in Yellowstone permitted by the USGS Place Names Committee to violate an established prohibition against naming thermal features after people.Phillips died in 1927 after accidentally consuming water hemlock roots, which he mistook for camas root, brought to him by some friends at Old Faithful. He was an early geyser enthusiast and had been preparing to write a field guide to Yellowstone's geysers.
