Nine years ago, while I was in my first year of digital design at university, the cult-phenomenon video game Five Nights at Freddy's was created.
I remember sitting and playing it with my peers in our class' game room. Lights completely off, the communal couch dragged unnecessarily close to the screen, and pillows at the ready to hide our faces at the jump scares.
It was new. It was different. It was terrifying. And riding off of each others' fears was the best way to be inducted into the world of FNAF.
I've always loved the dark and inherently spooky tones of the game. New sequels and iterations that have come out in the past few years have definitely leaned into a more cartoon-like and science fiction aesthetic.
Each to their own - this style wasn't exactly my favourite direction for the franchise to have taken.
Certain fans were able to capture that uncanny horror that we see in the original. Battington and Phsinom's work on their respective FNAF tapes spring to mind.
Another is "Jr's", developed by Ramenov, which has in my opinion the best aesthetics to any fan game, assisted by Chicho's utterly terrifying vintage animatronic models.
You can only imagine how thrilled I was to be able to get my hands on these stylized models, recreated by the talented DJ_DiscoHead. Inspiration started to quickly swirl, and with that I decided to knock out a little project over the next few days.
Not sure where I'll go with this. Now I've spent the hard yards setting up the scene it's a pretty straight forward approach now to just animate the models and come up with some cool scenarios.

Nine years ago, while I was in my first year of digital design at university, the cult-phenomenon video game Five Nights at Freddy's was created.
I remember sitting and playing it with my peers in our class' game room. Lights completely off, the communal couch dragged unnecessarily close to the screen, and pillows at the ready to hide our faces at the jump scares.
It was new. It was different. It was terrifying. And riding off of each others' fears was the best way to be inducted into the world of FNAF.
I've always loved the dark and inherently spooky tones of the game. New sequels and iterations that have come out in the past few years have definitely leaned into a more cartoon-like and science fiction aesthetic.
Each to their own - this style wasn't exactly my favourite direction for the franchise to have taken.
Certain fans were able to capture that uncanny horror that we see in the original. Battington and Phsinom's work on their respective FNAF tapes spring to mind.
Another is "Jr's", developed by Ramenov, which has in my opinion the best aesthetics to any fan game, assisted by Darroc's utterly terrifying vintage animatronic models.
You can only imagine how thrilled I was to be able to get my hands on these stylized models, recreated by the talented DJ_DiscoHead. Inspiration started to quickly swirl, and with that I decided to knock out a little project over the next few days.
Not sure where I'll go with this. Now I've spent the hard yards setting up the scene it's a pretty straight forward approach now to just animate the models and come up with some cool scenarios.

Formative 01 โ Composition and Editing
Working in a group of 4-5 people, film and edit the following very simple story:
On a cold morning, a person leaves his or her house in a hurry, gets into their car, drives to school, arrives at school, goes inside school building, arrives in class, and nervously sits down in front of a computer.
It is your teamโs job to film each shot using proper meaningful shot compositions and pacing. It is up to your team to decide just how much of each shot is necessary to show in order to tell the story. You want to achieve an economy of storytelling โ that is, show everything that is necessary to communicate your story, and no more.
Once you have filmed each shot, work together to edit the final sequence. Ideally, the sequence should be under 30 seconds in length, and certainly no longer than a minute.
You can use any camera you want to film this, including your phones. The idea is to simply try to tell a clear and effective story that communicates all of the story elements listed above. Is there a more complex story sitting underneath these simple stage directions? That is up to you and your team to determine.

Mismatched kids from all walks of a harshly segregated society rebel against the oppressive and controlling ways of an unjust government, to uncover the disgusting truth behind these drugs.

It's finally finished. Whangaparaoa College's entry into the 'Students Against Drink Driving' Film Competition for 2012. This years theme was 'Individual Choice, Community of Consequences', meaning how one persons actions could influence an entire group of people.
With a concept devised by directors Joshua Collecutt and myself (Jake Southgate), we set out to produce this impressive short film with the tremendous help from our friends and family. Not everything ran smoothly of course, as after three project edit wipes the end product was edited in the early hours of one Friday morning the day before the entries were due! The end product is still amazing, and we couldn't be happier with how the filming turned out!
A huge thank-you to Caltex for letting us film at your petrol station, Officer Dave Mitchell for the police car and your presence, Mrs Nicola Bain and Miss Susan Wilson for keeping the pressure on us to get this finished, and the biggest thanks to all the cast and crew involved in making this happen!

This is what happens when three Year 12 students, a phenomenal Year 12 actress, a brilliant Canon camera and a unique idea, come together to create a one-of-a-kind music video for their Level 2 Media Studies project. After three months of planning, filming and editing we're extremely pleased with the result. We're also considering a tribute to our most favorite band of all time. Cheers for inspiring us Coldplay!
