Art + Activism: A Collaborative Learning Project 2022 Hammer Museum 2022-09-26 | In the summer of 2022, the Hammer Museum's academic programs department launched the second year of Art + Activism: A Collaborative Learning Project, a multigenerational artmaking mentorship program. The program brought together eight high school students, four UCLA undergrads, and two UCLA graduate MFA students to explore the intersections of art and activism over the course of six weeks of online and in-person learning. Participants built creative and collaboration skills and deepened their knowledge of a range of artistic and activist practices. They also gained skills and strategies for navigating arts education and career pathways through mentorship cohorts and from guest speakers. Inspired by Andrea Bowers’s artistic practice, they collaborated on a culminating project that supports the work of local activist organization, Arts For LA. For the project, activists from Arts For LA shared about their arts education advocacy work and taught participants about organizing tactics and Proposition 28, an upcoming ballot measure that would significantly raise funding for arts education in K-12 public schools in California. Her thesis is that concepts of left and right are integral to understanding both drumming technique and American political discourse. A first-call sideperson in the Southern California jazz community, Raymond has performed and recorded with Bobby Bradford, Jeff Parker, Art Lande, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Vinny Golia, among many others. Hammer Projects: Kiyan Williams Hammer Museum 2022-07-08 | Between Starshine and Clay (2022) marks the first solo museum exhibition for artist Kiyan Williams (b. 1991, Newark, New Jersey) and is an installation that takes its name from an phrase in writer and educator Lucille Clifton’s 1993 poem "won’t you celebrate with me." Williams, who collects earth from familial sites and spaces that hold Black American histories, creates sculptural forms that slowly reveal traces and gestures of the body. Quinteros uses inexpensive materials to construct ephemeral, site-specific interventions. Aesthetic and visual analysis of the transformations of the world we know (or we believe we know) has led Quinteros to understand that everything is a construction in the broadest sense of the word, and that humans are capable not only of creating fiction but believing it.Quinteros was cofounder of the MICH Collective (International Museum of Chile, 2010–19) and is part of the art collective LA CUMBIA MAPACHE. She earned a bachelor of arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
