Aschenborn Music: Robert Götz – 1921 Askari (from Swahili for “soldier”) was the name given to native soldiers or policemen in the colonial troops of the European powers, particularly in Africa. The term was used in the colonial troops of Italy, Great Britain, Portugal, Germany and Belgium. Askaris played an important role both in the conquest of colonies and subsequently in the maintenance of colonial rule. In both world wars, they also fought outside their areas of origin. In the Schutztruppe for German East Africa, Askari was also the designation for the lowest rank in the troops.

It was composed on the 28th of June 1935 by Oberleutnant Kurt Wiehle while on his way to Königsbrück. Wiehle adapted a German sailor's song called "Luiska-Lied (Wohl über den Klippen)" writing lyrics more appropriate to the Panzerwaffe. At the time, Germany was clandestinely developing an armored force in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles. The song could be considered as a reflection of the German re-armament, launched in the same time frame as the song was written.
It has gained fame in the English-speaking world due to its usage in the 1965 film Battle of the Bulge. While throughout that film German characters speak English, the song is sung in the original German.
In 2017, the German army was banned from publishing song books containing Panzerlied and other marching songs by the Minister of Defence Ursula von der Leyen as part of new efforts at denazification. It has been heavily criticized as unnecessary censorship of German military culture.

Ludwigs archive2021-09-15 | Schwarzbraun ist die Haselnuss (lit. black-brown is the hazelnut) is a German folk song, which first appeared in the sixteenth century. When bringing his newly composed march to the regiment, the Kapellmeister Oelte simply told him: "We've got plenty enough of musical marches, put this one in the stove!". This episode eventually led to Teike taking his leave of the band and naming the march as "Alte Kameraden". Teike later worked as a police officer but also continued composing military marches, adding up to approximately 100 in total.

bald, allzubalde.

On the picture you see Yorcks close partner Blücher, but I thought this picture is epic and there is no really good one from Yorck. I added his head tho.

It was published in 1917 in his poem book Im Felde zwischen Nacht und Tag (In the (battle) field between day and night). The poem was also part of his 1916 novel Der Wanderer zwischen beiden Welten (The wanderer between both worlds).
The lyrics got popular through an adaption in a song created by Robert Götz. Götz tune did exist as early as 1916 but the Wild Geese song found a widespread recognition by usage in the Wandervogel movement / Bündische Jugend society during the late 1920s. The tragic lyrics pose an interesting contrast to the marching tune which found adoption in other societies as well. Apart from national Studentenverbindung fraternities it is a traditional song in the Austrian and German army.
The song is also popular in the French army in its French version "Les Oies Sauvages". The version of the French Foreign Legion has also overtaken the first stanza of the German lyrics as its fourth stanza. Furthermore the topic of wild geese rushing through the night has become a symbol of airborne troops though there is no widespread English translation so far.

Before the foundation of the Empire, it had been the royal anthem of Prussia since 1795 and remained it after 1871.The melody of the hymn derived from the British anthem "God Save the King". For these reasons, the song failed to become popular within all of Germany. Not only did it fail to win the support of most German nationalists, it was never recognized by the southern German states, such as Bavaria or Württemberg. After World War I, the German Empire came to an end and "Das Lied der Deutschen" became the national anthem of the Weimar Republic.

Teike wrote many pieces for the marching band of Grenadier-Regiment König Karl (5. Württembergisches) No. 123.

He was a baltic-german nobleman.
It tells about the fight of the German Freikorps, especially the so called "Baltikumer" after WW1. They fought in Latvia and Lithuania against the bolsheviki to defend the German borderlands. Some of the soldiers were of baltic german origin.
The singer is Jürgen V.
I used a teutonic knight as title picture, because they are the origin and ancestors of those people who fought there after ww1.
So in 1920 these soldiers had to leave the baltic region, because of no support from the German government. In the song they are desparate, many had fallen. They return to their fatherland and bring home their flag as their last duty. But it will be the duty of their children to bring the flag back to eastern land (Ostland), what indeed happend in WW2.

The Landtag assembly of the Italian South Tyrol province in 2004 by majority has rejected its adoption with regard to the Italian-speaking minority. It is however, like the Bozner Bergsteigerlied, an unofficial anthem of the German-speaking community.

It is one of the few songs by Walther for which a melody has survived.
I tried to translate it as good as possible, but it was sometimes hard to translate those old medieval meanings and the version of this song is sometimes a bit different from the lyrics on Wikipedia. I hope you´ll still enjoy it!
The first line is Middle High German, the second modern German and on the bottom the English translation as always.
