Production Update: Precision Triangles

Woodpeckers took the form factor of the familiar carpenter's square and enlarged it to sizes suited to large-scale furniture and cabinet work. But the new 12" and 18" Precision Triangles aren't stamped out like big-box-store carpenter's squares. Each one is precision-machined to the same tolerance we use when making our famous Precision Woodworking Squares. Here's an 18" reference with both 90° and 45° angles where the maximum allowable deviation is less than half the thickness of a typical human hair. We added a base to one edge of the square for convenience when doing layout work, but if you want the square to lie flat, the base comes off with just a few machine screws. With or without the base, you have a highly versatile and extremely accurate tool that will elevate your layout work, assembly checks and machinery set-up.

The heavily ribbed extruded aluminum fence is straighter, longer and taller than your standard rip fence. The plywood fence faces found on most modern rip fences are subject to movement from temperature and humidity changes. Even inconsistent pressure on the mounting screws can warp and twist the face. In a future video I’ll take the bulk of the remaining material away at the bandsaw, and then clean it up with a flush trim router bit.

Flatten End Grain Cutting Boards The EASY WAY with the Rout-N-Plane Bench Top Board Mill #woodwork

Woodpeckers 2024-09-06 | Woodpeckers Rout-N-Plane and Rout-N-Plane XL Bench Top Board Mills tackle two jobs your thickness planer can’t...end-grain cutting boards and glued-up panels wider than your planer. Both work with stock from 3/4” to 3” thick. Original Rout-N-Plane will handle 15” wide material with most routers (routers with large bases will have slightly less capacity). The XL model takes that up to 24”. Just fix your cutting board to a flat table, adjust the Rout-N-Plane height just above the board and set your router depth of cut to shave a little off the top. In minutes you’ll have a flat board ready for finish sanding.

End grain cutting boards stand up to heavy work in the kitchen better than edge grain or face grain boards. But leveling an end grain board should never be done on a jointer or thickness planer. It’s not only ineffective, it’s potentially dangerous. Leveling them with a router sled isn’t exactly a new idea, but Rout-N-Plane offers convenience and flexibility you can’t get with shop-built sleds. Rout-N-Plane adjusts in seconds to safely guide any router across your board. It adjusts for board thicknesses from 3/4” to a full 3”. Original Rout-N-Plane handles boards up to 15” wide (based on a 6” diameter base with a 1” diameter cutter). Rout-N-Plane XL bumps that up to 24”, Length is only limited by how much table you have. Original Rout-N-Plane works on tables at least 22-1/2” wide. Rout-N-Plane XL needs at least 32”.

A physical reference representing your critical dimension leads to more accurate machine set-ups than trying to adjust to a scale. Lots of woodworkers use sets of blocks for this task, but Woodpeckers Adjustable Setup Block, is one single device that adjusts to any dimension between 1/64” to 1-3/16”. Just use the easy-to-read scale to position the reference surface and dial in your cutter height or fence position. Use your sense of sight and touch to deliver the perfect settings.

The “TOP” scale measures the distance from the bottom of the base to the top of the reference plate.
You can use that to set the distance between the bottom of a drill bit and table of your drill press. The
“BOTTOM” scale measures the distance from the bottom of the base to the bottom face of the reference plate. It’s perfect for adjusting the height of a bit in your router table or the depth of cut on your table saw. The reference plate extends away from the body of the tool, giving you lots of alignment options.

The tool starts with two adjustable bevel ends. They swing out to match the angle of the adjacent wall. The versatility of this tool comes from how the ends join the beam. By using our familiar Dual-Purpose Track and our proven track connectors, you can add beam sections as needed. You can use the same tool to make templates for shelves up to 64” and as short as 17”.

One end has a sliding connector (you can put it on whichever end you prefer). This lets you adjust the length of the gauge right into the opening for the shelf or stair tread. Slide the beam out until both ends are against the walls, adjust the two ends to match the wall angle, lock it up and you have your perfect instant template.

This tool really shines on the next step... transferring the template to your stock. While other commercial jigs and all homemade designs expect you to align the jig to the edge of your stock by feel, our Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge has two stops that flip over to give you a perfect reference for the edge. Now, simply mark your ends and make your cuts. The shelf, tread or riser will drop right in perfectly.

The Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge comes complete with (4) 12” sections of beam, (1) 6” section of beam, two adjustable bevel ends, two edge flip-stops and all the necessary connecting bars and knobs.
