Restoration success: It took almost 40 years to become friends with my starter guitar Ramblin Rogers 2026-07-25 | It seems I may have made my very first, budget Applause guitar into a bit of a sleeper. Applause was the budget brand under Ovation, made in Korea. I got it in 1987 and always struggled with it. Playing it was actually painful. But that's not surprising, as it never saw anything close to a service nor setup. As a novice player I knew nothing about that stuff, so I just figured it was a bad guitar and eventually moved on. It actually shaped my view on the Stratocaster as a whole. I've owned a couple of the real deal too, but just couldn't bring myself to fully enjoying them. I've always loved Telecasters, but its sibling... not so much. My Applause has been lying around in pieces for decades, but never completely gone from memory. It felt like some form of annoying, unfinished business.I finally decided to see how much I could improve it, by swapping out the hardware and just give it a good service. I wanted to turn it into a real "Maiden machine". I'm by no means an expert at working on guitars, but that's the good thing about owning (mostly) cheap instruments; you're not afraid to give it a go. And I'm always eager to learn something new. So I've been improving over the years at setting up and doing fret work. The neck was in pretty good shape - no weird bumps or twists - and that's a good starting point. So I got some Kluson tuners, made a new nut out of Corian, leveled the frets, got a Mojotone HSS 58' Quiet Coil pre-wired pickguard, and a new tremolo bridge. Long story short: It is now shockingly good. I've finally become friends with my starter guitar. AND I now love Strato... I intended to use it for recording direct into my audio interface, for some quick and dirty recording. I'm happy I did, because it seems the steel, Quilter and speaker work quite well together. I'm deeply impressed by the Quilter Superblock US - I still don't understand how they pulled this off.
