Remember, that clip was in the teaser from the end of season 9. That teaser only gave us 13 clips from 5 cities. That is to say, we knew we were probably missing all of the context for that wallaby clip, so I am honestly still amazed that it was able to be found! To properly communicate just how impressive this find seems to me, let me quickly summarize just how much, or rather how little, we knew going into this search:All the other clips from the teaser were identified within a couple of hours of the teaser dropping. From those 12 clips, we knew that the crew had been to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Alice Springs and Hobart. The only clip from Hobart was the "shrimp on the Barbie" clip from the city center.The one thing that might help us narrow down the whereabouts of this marsupial was the wallaby itself. A quick google search revealed that it was a so-called red-necked wallaby, only found on the Australian east coast and Tasmania… which left us with basically half of the country and almost every major airport still in the space of possible locations.But, there was a smidge more info to be inferred. Because, of course, the clip was not completely without context. We knew the clip was recorded as part of a game of Jet Lag. The clips in the teaser were from quite disconnected locations all over the country, so it seemed most likely that the main mode of travel would be by air. This meant that the wallaby clip was probably recorded around some noteworthy city or a nearby airport.Based mostly on vibes and hope that this would be easier than it seemed, frequent Discord speculator Anotherdoofus and I started looking into places where wallabies might be found in Hobart, Tasmania. Immediately, the Queen's Domain and the Waterworks Reserve seemed like the right location might be around there. The vegetation seemed about right. But none of them seemed to have any mid-sized boulders like the ones in the wallaby clip. And none of them seemed to have the degree of quality Streetview coverage that we would need to identify the exact branches from the wallaby clip.Someone on the Discord mentioned that a Reddit user had reported seeing Ben and Adam in Hobart on the first game day. Suddenly, it seemed a bit more likely that the wallaby was Tasmanian, because Ben and Adam had mentioned on an episode of the Layover Podcast that they had seen a wild wallaby during the game. It wasn't decisive evidence, but it solidified Hobart as the center of our investigation.One of the users on the Jet Lag Discord, Chuq, had just joined us after finding a bunch of the teaser locations independently and posting them to Reddit. He decided that the Hobart theory seemed likely enough that it could make sense to physically go out and look for it in a handful of select locations. He established an Imgur post with a map of his plans, and over the following week he posted images from the best matches he could find. It was a lot of material to look through, and he still hadn't found an exact match. I posted a community note on my channel, summarizing what we knew and asking for any leads that we could get.Well, about a week later, Anotherdoofus decided to sift through all the images, just in case. And well, this is how he described what happened next:"you know those tree branches look kinda right and there's a Y tree but the direction is... oh you bastards, you did it again".The clip of the wallaby had been mirrored in the teaser so the camera movement would match the left to right movement of the two clips that preceded it. But the branches, the tree trunks and the boulders were a perfect match. The clip was recorded at the lookout on Mt. Nelson Signal Station in Hobart, Tasmania.Colossal kudos to Chuq for all the effort and to Anotherdoofus for spotting the location in the end.#jetlagthegame
