XoioThis video is showing how we can create a continuous terrain that features realistic roads. In that workflow we can even cut roads into steep terrains and create serpentines and mountain streets.
In the second part we then make use of the hybrid topology to texture the terrain, animate objects, place fencing and further refine the model: youtu.be/0B1rHBPFMv8

VR 360 walkthrough: http://bit.ly/2dyfrerThe Vinery - Realtime Animation for VRXoio2016-10-06 | This animation was rendered in realtime making use of the Unreal Engine 4. The depicted architecture and scenery was conceptualized and realized by our design team at xoio as part of a competition. In order to create an interesting setting, we decided to move the vinery architecture into an unexpected environment. An icelandic scenario with a strong volcanic touch delivers the right counterpiece to our architecture. Additionally the vast landscape allowed us to make use of the impressive terraforming tools of the unreal engine. The scene can be freely explored using HTC Vive, Occulus or regular displays.

Our team was instantely inspired by the isometric feel of the newly created logo, which is influenced by Bauhaus graphics of the early 20s. We loved the idea of inverting this concept by „3-dimensionalizing“ it again and using it as a stencil for each shot in variations.
We were lucky to have a partner that went along with the idea of „Playing with the logo“ which normally is off-limits in brand communication. We thank Openmode for the great collaboration and wish the very best for the young startup!Kinzo - Erste Campus - CGI - Perfect OfficeXoio2016-01-22 | Kinzo Berlin entrusted us to do this short featuring the amazing atmosphere of their office interior at "Erste Campus". The design shines through friendly materials, flexible working areas and an accustically sophisticated design - the perfect office.
We aimed to translate the positive vibes this place radiates into this sunny animation. People integration was a major aspect, because we challenged ourselve to achieve a lively, natural and fresh impression without without putting too much visual focus onto the people.
Therefor we carefully placed our "lucky ghosts" leaving traces of busy activity while retaining a calm atmosphere.
We thank Kinzo for the great cooperation,

These data then was meticulously reconstructed in virtual 3d-space to facilitate a true immersive experience. As I remember another traveller saying, every second corner of this place offers a completely different impression to you - and still there are so many places we could not cover here.
About us: Normally our studio xoio is creating cg-imagery, but we decided to dive into the field of aerial filming in 2014. Spending senseless hours and countless euros tinkering with our phantom 1 we booked a trip to iceland to have as much liberty as you desire to take images from above.
Our trip was overshadowed by some inital crash on day 1 which basically wrecked the drone completely. Frustrated we moved on and decided to forget about the smashed up copter, but after few days we took another look at the parts and decided to piece them together again. After spending half the night in a riverbed cleaning the single elements from volcanic ash and with considerable amounts of ducttape we fixed it temporarily. The phoenix .. ehm phantom rose from the ashes again - quite an emotional moment for us! Two weeks of intense filming ensued: Flying, charging batteries, storing footage, Setting up camp, trying to find some sleep in the neverending day of midsummer ...
For some more documentation and some extra panoramas of this marvelous place please feel free to visit our website at www.xoio.de/en/iceland.
Special credits go to our friend Martin Eigenbrodt, who saw this whole voyage through with us and patiently accepted hours of us fiddling with gadgets in some mosquito-ridden backvalleys :).
A final note: Since our copter is is first generation, we really had to put a lot of effort into postproduction. We personally took a lot of liberty to adjust colors or replace some pieces if rotors or legs of our phantom disturbed the impression. Still I guess, the places closely resemble the impression of the actual place in natura - go and have a look yourself!
Peace, xoio

The car is full CGI, while the environment is based on filmed footage. See description below!
It's not fully polished and there are some fireflies in the rendered sequence we would normally avoid. But for now our guys are happy with this exercise.
The process can be roughly described like this:
1. We filmed the mini clip with our Canon 7D and a quick steadycam mockup. 2. The videoclip was consequently stabilized in AE to smoothen out several shaky movements. 3. We tracked the motion in 3d in After Effects and exported the camera and several Nulls back into 3d Studio Max. 4. Additionally we created an HDR-360° cube by shooting multiexposure shots on site. 5. The HDR-360 was stitched in Photoshop to create a cubical environment map. 6. In 3ds Studio Max the HDR was used to recreate the lighting situation 1:1. 7. The Nulls were used to recreate a rough standin for the scene environment. 8. We used a measured distance from the site to scale the scene in 3ds Max accordingly. It's quite important to have some realscale scene to avoid strange size relations. 9. Shading was done as usual in Vray, actually the car-shader could have needed some more passion. 10. The scene was rendered with several object masks. We made sure to have all relevant passes (e.g. shadow pass, object ids, reflection, alpha) to get all the necessary info to composite the original footage with the rendered footage. Special attention needs to go to all the areas were the two elements merge and blend, especially in contact areas. 11. I will not explain the compositing in detail. I can only say, it involves a lot of stepping back and checking, if color values and contrasts match.

Best regards, Team xoio1 minute of Bilbao - 3d shortXoio2013-07-01 | A short side project we did in our studio a while back. Inspired by the work of Alex Roman we took up the challenge to animate a short tour around the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum of modern art. We intended to give our animation a fresh twist by showing the museum in context with surrounding artworks by Jeff Koons and Louise Bourgeois. Despite some technical challenges we hope that we could translate the light mood of this cultural highlight in the last rays of a summer evening.
For people who know the location: We took some artistic liberty with a few elements. We repositioned the dog and used some backplates that do not match the urban environment. Sorry, but we are just a little too far off for shooting fitting backplates ;) and hope that we still could catch the feel of the place fittingly.
Technical background info: Obviously the special material of the titan cladding is a fair challenge to be reproduced in 3d-animation. The integration of 3d-typographie was a crucial aspect in this little exercise. These descriptive elements were added in 3d-postproduction and had to be combined with prerendered footage. Several camera-effects like depth of field were important to achieve the desired look and was achieved through a elaborate setup of 2d, 2.5d and rendered 3d-footage.
We hope you enjoy this 1 minute of Bilbao art-space.
Thank you for watching,

To do so, you need any version of 3ds Max and at least Vray 2.0.

Peter from xoioTutorial 6: Hard Surface Modelling - Clean your imports / Use spherify for modellingXoio2011-11-01 | Here we show two hard-surface-modelling tips in one tutorial. The first one shows some good nice features hidden in the old editable mesh menu, useful when dealing with imported geometry, that needs to be cleaned out. Oftenly 3d-packages like Sketch-up or cinema generate reasonable mesh to be used in Max, but get screwed in the transfer. We show a few clicks that may turn your import into something useful again.
The other nifty little trick is about circular structures again and the interim-use of the spherify-modifier to get nice, distortion-free round structures.
