The rib stitch is very versatile because you can make the alternating knit stitch 'ridges' and purl stitch 'valleys' any width you choose.
As an example, the popular 1x1 ribbing is where both the ridges and valleys are 1 stitch wide, but how do you change this so that the ridges and valleys are 3 stitches wide? Or, what if you want the ridges 2 stitches wide but the valleys 4 stitches wide?
Well, then you have to calculate the pattern yourself, and work out how many stitches you need to cast on in the first place.
This is very simple knitting maths, and probably the simplest design exercise you can do. I hope you find it useful :)
