KNICKS IN FIVE!!!
Growing up, basketball was my sport of choice. I played it, I watched it, I understood it in that way you only understand something when you are young enough to let it take over your whole nervous system. The sound of sneakers screaming on a court, the ugly little battles under the rim, the trash talk, the impossible shots, the heartbreak, the last few seconds stretching into an entire lifetime. That was my sport.
Somewhere around the late 90s or early 2000s, I drifted away from it. Life happened. Interests changed. The machine kept moving. I stopped keeping up, stopped knowing every roster, stopped watching every game like it mattered.
But this Knicks playoff run pulled me back in.
Not in some casual background-noise way either. It reminded me why people care about sports in the first place. The ritual of it. The stupidity of yelling at a screen. The weird civic religion of strangers suddenly believing in the same impossible thing. Living in NYC, you feel that differently. This city is brutal, loud, exhausting, overpriced, half-broken, and somehow still the greatest place on earth when something gives everyone a reason to look up at the same time.
I have always supported the local teams because that is part of the deal when you live here. You inherit the misery, the jokes, the blown leads, the delusion, the hope, and every once in a while, the city pays you back with something that feels bigger than a game.
This Knicks run feels like that.
It feels like old New York waking up for a minute. It feels like every bar, bodega, apartment window, sidewalk argument, and lunatic in a jersey finally got handed a reason to believe again. Maybe that sounds dramatic, but sports are dramatic. That is the whole point. Tiny wars with uniforms. Opera for people who pretend they hate opera.
So yes...

Because sometimes the city deserves to be loud for the right reasons.
