It's so captivating that such a large group of composers can put together something so cohesive and memorable, it's definitely one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. The conception of this cover started about four years ago, back when I was working on Sonic Misadventures. A friend of the show, Gareth Spriggs of Find The Computer Room, joked about a jazz cover of Mushroom Hill Zone... and of course, I relished the challenge. I'm glad I waited to tackle it though, so I can really try to do the tune justice. For this arrangement, I wanted to represent the season-changing aspect of the level, as it goes from lush greenery to a barren landscape, particularly in the slower section near the middle. For me, making the percussion more sparse and creating more melodic solos serves to differentiate between the two acts and how the stakes are raised for the second.I also tried to go with a more conservative selection of instruments than past covers, taking a lot of influence from Weather Report. After watching sets that friends performed at events like MAGFest and PAX, I want to frame more of these arrangements in a setting where they could be performed with a live band. I also greatly appreciate the care taken with the new arrangements of familiar Gen 1 tracks to tell new stories using the same melodic material. My friend Ben of 8-Bit Music Theory has a fantastic video on this topic, where he also talks about Go Ichinose’s arrangement of Lavender Town: youtu.be/rwQjMC7C2Z0 My original intention was to upload this video as a bait-and-switch April Fool's joke, a la SiIvaGunner, starting with a spooky and heavy intro more reminiscent of the original Lavender Town, before going into this more tranquil rendition. But by missing that date, I had the chance to contribute the arrangement to GameLark’s album, which is always a great honor! I wanted to write a very lush, soaring arrangement of this theme, with orchestral strings and flute solis galore, and I’m really happy with how that aspect of it came out. It was also fun to evolve the material slightly over the course of the arrangement, with a solo section and ending key change into D major - overall, I certainly could have done more to separate it from the original, but I’m very pleased with how this turned out and I don’t think I’d have done it much differently.This arrangement is also a debut of several new instruments into my collection, which I have been learning over the past year! I took a flute doubling class at Berklee in fall 2020, and while it was a struggle to start learning, I’m proud of all the progress I’ve made and it was such a joy to use it on this cover. I could write flute solis forever, they’re one of my favorite textures. Secondly, I have an EWI now!! One of my dream instrument purchases for quite some time, I bought a friend’s EWI 4000s earlier this year, and I honestly haven’t had so much fun with an instrument in AGES - I’ve been using it a lot to perform on Twitch, but this is its YouTube debut! When Allen from GameGrooves presented the opportunity to contribute to a charity album in the wake of heightened racial tensions, I was feeling an array of emotions but I knew that the best way that I could channel my emotions was into my art. The lyrics and message of Life Will Change immediately struck me as something beneficial and empowering for people to hear, so I spent the next six days arranging, producing, and coordinating ten other musicians to create this.To briefly discuss the arrangement, I initially took a lot of inspiration from Earth, Wind, and Fire's hit "Let's Groove", especially with the talkbox doubling the bass and the punchy horns. However, I was definitely not afraid to let the arrangement go in different directions, such as the breakdown about halfway through. It was a lot of fun to see what different live players can bring to a production that I wouldn't expect - Xnarky suggested using his baritone guitar for some of the heavier sections, and XenoKeyz absolutely UNLEASHED the talkbox across the tune! Overall, I'm very happy with how dynamic this arrangement was and I'm excited to see it evolve in the future as well.As of the time of writing, I firmly believe that this is the best creation I've ever made. Not only did it come together with a high level of quality and efficiency, but I am grateful for the opportunity to create for a cause that is bigger than myself. His harmonic language is so distinct and charming, and his melodies have always gotten stuck in my head. Even though I haven't played Banjo-Kazooie yet (hoping to remedy that soon!), I've been very familiar with its soundtrack for as long as I've been interested in video game music. It was a huge treat to tackle a tune like this, especially for a Materia Community album.These community projects always give me the inspiration to produce my most ambitious work, and this is no exception! From the beginning, I always had the intention of taking inspiration from New Orleans second-line music and featuring my friend Cameron on clarinet. I met him at a Berklee summer program about three years ago, and he's always blown me away. As my ideas ruminated, I came to the decision to not only write the tune for big band but also to feature original lyrics written from the perspective of Banjo and Kazooie as they begin their adventure. When writing the lyrics for this track with Zach, I described it as the opening number of a Banjo-Kazooie musical...To make that happen though, I needed a Kazooie - enter Tiggs, stage right! I met Tia at MAGFest 2019 and after hanging out and hearing her perform with video game big band ConSoul, I knew I wanted to work with her on some music soon after. This was the perfect opportunity, and I just knew she would be ecstatic to sing as a giant bird. This was such a fun track to put together, especially engineering some of my own sessions at Berklee for the first time - my personal session recording my Banjo vocals was a JOY.Ideally, I would have found time over this summer to meet up with Tia in person and film a fun music video for this tune, but given the current world circumstances, this lyric video will have to suffice for the time being! Editing this "bouncing-ball" type video was very time-consuming, but a fun learning experience, especially using After Effects for the first time. Perhaps it's because I haven't ever sunk my teeth into any Zelda games, but the iconic tunes from across the series have always stuck with me. The last cover I did from the series was The Legendary Hero from Wind Waker way back in 2016, so it's nice to finally revisit the series with all the skills I've gained over the years.This arrangement was originally going to be an April Fools' video for this year! Since a lot of my friends at Berklee are avid TikTok fans and don't know much about video game music, it was so surreal to hear them all suddenly singing Kokiri Forest, let alone realize that they learned it from David Ramos' cover. I've gotten to record for David before - he's a fantastic performer and person - so when I decided to tackle this tune, I reached out to see if he'd be down to make a fun cameo at the end, bringing this whole thing full circle. He graciously accepted and made this whole process even more fun. Hopefully, David and I can work together on an even grander musical project very soon!I had this funky arrangement done in about four hours; since it was originally a very last-minute idea, I just ran with the first idea that came to me when I sat at my piano! Had I given myself more time, I'd have likely approached this tune differently, channeling more of the childlike wonder and whimsy that exists in Kokiri Forest. That said though, I'm still very happy with how this cover turned out, moments like the piano solo and the Dbmaj7(#5) right before the B-section being particular standouts.I always love playing with Noah Benson, he's my roommate in Boston and while it's a bummer we can't play in-person right now, this is the next best thing! He crushes it every time. A huge shoutout as well to my new friend Josh Sebek, the mastering engineer who also gave me mixing pointers near the end. Also, BASS! This is my second time tracking bass for a cover, and while I've still got a lot to learn, I'm excited to implement it into future productions.And there will be future productions! I know I've established a nasty habit of going away for way too long, and I'm sorry for that. I've been learning so much about music, the world, and myself as an artist and person over the past year, and I think it's time to start showing people what I've learned. Late in our first semester, Noah Benson showed me the title track of jazz pianist Justin Kauflin's album "Coming Home" and I instantly fell in love - such a simple but groovy and beautiful tune. When we decided the next GameLark album would be a Kingdom Hearts tribute, the thought quickly came to my mind to do Lazy Afternoons in the style of this tune, and it turned out to be a great fit! Reference mixing can really do wonders in production and recording, as we worked to treat the drum kit and get that same dead sound on the record and make it a very tight production. It's always fun getting to play soprano saxophone too, and I look forward to doing it more in the future!And of course, props as always to my wonderful collaborators! All the instrumentalists brought their absolute A-game to this tune, and it was such a joy to watch their parts gradually come in. I had recently gotten into Mac Ayres' work, and I loved the way they sounded on Easy so much that I decided to write a full arrangement for them and use it for one of my final projects! Most of this was tracked back in mid-December, but I didn't get the last components in until earlier in May, and it was wonderful to watch it evolve.I took a while to figure out how to handle the horns - I was originally attempting to make something complex, but then I heard the work of Jerry Hey and realized it didn't need to be! His arrangements rely on a lot of octave unison for very pronounced lines that add a lot of punch to a pop horn chart, something memorable that people will hold onto! I'd like to say I've done a bit of that here. The vocals were also a blast to work on - I almost had nothing set in stone before going in, and in the 4-hour recording session with Thomas and Zoe, we worked out a lot of fun ideas and just had a blast.I consider myself blessed to have the opportunity to attend such a great school like Berklee with wonderful musicians and friends that I can work with on super cool projects like this. For that reason, this project means a lot to me and I really do hope you enjoy it. Super Mario 64's credits theme has always been one of my favorites, and after it didn't get a rendition on "GET N!", I knew I had to do it properly some point down the line.The arrangement was actually finished around the end of September, but it took me until now to actually finish putting it together - a bit more by the books, but it was a lot of fun writing and learning the sax soli on this, both for alto and tenor! For my first project back from being sick, after doing some searching around the internet, I decided to try my hand at a full English version of it! Considering I'm still new to the art of lyric translation, I'm pretty happy with how the second verse and chorus came out, and it was fun to build an instrumental like this with forward motion in mind.The video was super fun to film too - I went upstate to visit family for a weekend and they were gracious to allow me to film on their property during a beautiful sunset. My friend Kyle Brook did a take on this song a number of years ago, and it's been stuck in my head ever since. I've always known I wanted to do something from the Cave Story OST, let alone this song, but I just needed the right idea.Enter that piano motif - a super on-the-spot idea that suited that homey feeling I got from the Mimiga Village, and one that could lead to a lot of fun musical interplay. I got right to work and within two days, this cover was all planned out and recorded, I'm definitely pretty happy with how it turned out!One of the biggest new experiments for me on this cover was trying to do it without a full drum kit, and not using Superior Drummer for more than a kick or snare. I have so many little percussion instruments, and I wanted to see how well I could build a groove using a smaller set of instruments. Considering that drum programming is one of my least favorite parts of the video making process, it was a treat in many ways to try out and I'd love to experiment further with it using instruments like a cajon. Clearly, Peaceful Days is no exception. I first discovered this tune through PPF's cover from 2017, and when I revisited it recently, I immediately thought to turn it into a cheesy 80s fusion ballad.I took a lot of inspiration from bands like Casiopea and T-SQUARE in my arrangement and reharmonization of this song, particularly the former's "Twilight in Upper West", and experimented with synth sounds from the Yamaha DX7 and different forms of reverb, both of which were prominent in 80's production. I had a TON fun putting the video together too, using a lot of editing techniques to make it look like it came from an old VHS. Also dat bandana. But here it is! This would've been done sooner, but life's gotten in the way of a lot of things and I wanted to really make this sound great. That being said, some of my first musical memories involve playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog on my GBA while waiting for the barber. Tunes like Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone would get stuck in my head as I struggled to get through those levels.When it came time to plan for t̶h̶e̶ ̶e̶x̶t̶r̶e̶m̶e̶l̶y̶ ̶s̶u̶c̶c̶e̶s̶s̶f̶u̶l̶ Sonic Month, I knew I wanted to tackle one of Masato Nakamura's iconic compositions, and I felt like I could have a lot of fun with this one! I knew I wanted it to be a large-scale collaboration since those have traditionally turned out well for me, so I decided to challenge myself to arrange for big band, streaming a lot of the process live on YouTube.I can't pinpoint any specific influences for this arrangement, but I took a page from Tee Lopes' book and borrowed some reharmonizations from his 2012 rendition of this track during the B-section. It was cool to put some new percussion to use, namely my cabasa and Alejandro's guiro, and try out a new video style! Though you already may have seen it with my Believe cover, I tried out this style here first, and though I likely won't do it for every cover, it was great to try out and served this cover remarkably well with the number of shots I had on screen - as many as 19 at once!And on the subject of shots, of course, I would be remiss if I didn't endlessly thank my 10 incredible collaborators, without which this would not have been possible. From Carlos' burnin' solo near the end and Alejandro's wonderful mix and master, to Daniel covering for three trombone parts and Noah staying on me to get this video done, this project would not have come out nearly as well as I think it did without their invaluable help, and you should absolutely go check their stuff out. The Polar Express has been a part of my life for years, and I've always loved Josh Groban's beautiful rendition of this tune. I wasn't necessarily sure where to start when I took to recording my version of Believe, but as I went along, I was surprised to see how quick it all took shape.Some of my best arrangement ideas happen by pure accident, and such was the case with Believe, with the modulations during the second verse coming from just noodling on the piano. The second one up to F Major is a particular favorite! The album was originally conceived as a pitch for the Super Mario 64 Fan Remake that was taking the internet by storm around the time I started my YouTube channel properly, and that included re-arranging music into a different rendition for every single level in the game, so this rendition of Whomp's Fortress was on the cards for that from the very beginning. I not only wanted to see this arrangement through to the end, but also wanted to reflect a piece of the project's origins in its final release! Looking back on it now, the instrumentation reminds me of the Broadway musical Hamilton, which I am also very fond of... Maybe I should try stuff with that!But anyway, I decided to call on my good friend Joshua Taipale to play guitar on this one, and he did a great job, as always. This is definitely more of a by-the-books cover, and in the future, I hope to deviate much more from the source material. So when Sebastian Wolff, head of the Materia Collective, announced that he wanted to do an Ori and the Blind Forest remix project in honor of the Definitive Edition being released on its anniversary, I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to participate in this tradition! We only had three days to complete a track, and the outcome was a 37-track album with over 50 musicians involved... in just 3 days. It's crazy to think what a hard deadline can do to people's work ethics.I've wanted to do a piano and sax duet for awhile, so I figured that with such a short amount of time to work, I would be able to do something simple like that. Since I haven't played the game yet, I went through a chunk of it until I found this song that I felt would work very well with that set of instruments. Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Ending Theme - Piano Cover || Charles Ritz Charles Ritz 2015-06-24 | Ladies and gentlemen, after over two months of waiting, I'm thrilled to announce that I was a member of the sound team for Sweet Dream! This is a celebratory short made by SonicpoX for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise's 24th anniversary, and I arranged the main orchestral remix heard throughout the animation, along with setting the initial score for the first scene.You can hear the full remix I did for the project, with a bunch of my friends, over here:So, I couldn't help but put together a piano cover to celebrate the release! That lack of a pedal is still there and it bites me in the butt right near the end, but regardless, I think this came out alright, all things considered. I likely won't be doing another piano cover until I get a pedal, for the sake of realism, and maybe try to find a new camera angle. I definitely hope to start doing a lot more of these as means to fill the gap between my bigger and fuller remixes, and as means to just improve my playing.I've always had a soft spot for this song, and I felt that it was a really nice choice for a first live piano cover. It was fun to take a lot more creative liberties with this one, and see how into it I could get. You may notice that I'm a bit confined with my range, and my sound isn't the most realistic, and that's because as of now, I'm lacking a pedal, so I can't mess around in those lower ranges in the way that I usually do, because otherwise, I'd be all over the place.
