We spent 2 weeks sailing around the East Caribbean islands of St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, joined by a different set of guests each week. We set the sails and fly out of Lamlash, heading north to scenic Lochranza for a day of exploring. Hosting a pirate perfumer, marine biologist, and 35 school kids on Bessie Ellen Going The Whole Hogg | Kim & Del 2024-12-21 | During Bessie Ellen's changeover days at Pembroke Dock, we hosted some special guests on board, including marine biologist Sam Williams from The Darwin Centre, 35 local school kids, and perfumer @SarahMcCartney4160. Amongst all the excitement, we also had the usual changeover tasks to complete, like laundry, supply shopping, deep cleaning, and voyage planning. The dramatic cliffs on the northeast of the island were teeming with birdlife, while golden beaches in the southwest were the perfect place to relax and dip feet in the chilly waters lapping the shore. Then, skipper and owner Nikki Alford heard that the High Orchard Bridge, one of many along the Sharpness Canal that must lift to allow ships to pass through, was broken. Suddenly Nikki, the crew, and the team at Nielsen's Shipyard had just a few days to completely remove Bessie Ellen's masts and rigging, lay them on the deck to pass under the bridge, and replace it all again on the other side of the bridge. It took a mammoth effort from all involved to complete the task in record time and get Bessie ready for her departure on 19th April 2024. We spent two nights at Gokyo, climbing up Gokyo Ri (5340m) on the second morning for spectacular views over the lakes and surrounding mountains. The weather wasn't great on the day we crossed Renjo La (5388 m), the third and final of the Three Passes, but we decided to trek anyway as it was due to get even worse in the coming few days. Many people stay at Lungden (4360 m) after crossing the pass, but we decided to have lunch here and continue down the valley all the way to Thame (3800 m) instead. The following day we continued to Monjo, via Namche Bazaar, then on to Lukla on the last morning. We flew to Manthali/Ramechhap the following morning. This airport is used during peak season, and it's a 4 hour drive from Kathmandu. You can auto-translate into many other languages too. We did the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal in April 2023 in partnership with Kathmandu-based trekking agency Himalayan Masters. We trekked with guide, Govinda Rai, and porter, Prakas Tamang. It was part of a longer trek through the Khumbu region on the Everest Three Passes trail.The Classic EBC trekking route and the Alternative/Everest Three Passes trekking route diverge at Dingboche. The classic EBC trail goes direct to Lobuche in 1 day, but it's also possible to get to Lobuche via a more challenging high pass called Kongma La over 2 - 3 days. This is the route we chose, and it was spectacular! This film starts in Dingboche, on Day 6 of our trek, and we continued up the valley to Chukhung. We spent two nights at Chukhung, doing an acclimatisation hike up to Chukhung Ri at 5380 m on the second day. This helped our bodies to acclimatise to the high altitude, and put is in good stead for the pass crossing the following day. We left Chukhung around 630 am, prepared for a long day climbing 5 hours up to Kongma La at 5514 m, then another 3 hours down to the Khumbu Glacier and Lobuche on the opposite side. We took food and enough water to last the whole day, as there is nowhere to eat or fill water on the way.At Lobuche we rejoined the Classic EBC route, continuing to Gorak Shep the following day, the highest settlement on the route at 5160 m. The facilities are very basic here. Most people visit EBC after lunch, then do a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar the following morning. We recommend doing this trek anti-clockwise, crossing Kongma La first, and be sure to acclimatise properly before crossing your first pass. We joined the trail directly after our Langtang Valley trek, adding an extra 6 days to our route and ending at Kutumsang. Along with our guide, Govinda Rai, we trekked from the Langtang/Gosainkunda trail junction near Pairo to Gosainkunda lake (4400 m) over 3 days via Thulo Syabru and Laurebina. We spent 2 nights at the lake, then crossed the Laurebina Pass (4646 m) to Ghopte, and trekked to Kutumsang on the last day. It's possible to continue trekking another 1.5 days to Sundarijal, close to Kathmandu, or take a bus or private jeep from Kutumsang back to Kathmandu, like we did.Part of a group of high altitude alpine lakes, Gosainkunda (4400 m) (also spelt Gosaikunda) is a spectacular sapphire jewel in the mountains of Langtang National Park. The entire area has huge importance within Hindu mythology, and Gosainkunda, home to major deities, is the most prominent and significant lake. Countless pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area to bathe in the lake’s holy waters, with those numbers swelling during the Ganga Dashahara and Janai Purnima festivals. We learned the ropes, indulged in outstanding food, and explored the islands of Mull, Colonsay, Oronsay, Jura, Luing, Easdale and Kerrera. We slept onboard, along with 10 fellow guests, 3 crew members, skipper Nikki, and salty sea dog/chief dolphin sniffer, Bracken. The character of the boat, beauty of the Hebrides, excitement of learning new skills, and wonderful hospitality made this sailing adventure one of our most memorable trips to date.
