Mama Luigi ReAnimate Project: Process Michael Ruocco 2017-02-21 | My friend Andrew Dickman started a ReAnimate animation collab for the (in)famous "Mama Luigi" episode of the Super Mario World TV show, and I couldn't help but join in to animate a shot. My shot comes from the intro to the series, where Mario grabs a magic feather which gives him a cape to fly with. Here's a little video showing my process/progress on the shot, from initial ruffs, through tie-downs, to clean up, color, effects and the final export. I did the animation in TVPaint and the background in Photoshop. My apologies if the video looks a tad blurry because all my initial exports during the process were exported out of the program at half resolution.
Grumpy King Walk (2012) Michael Ruocco 2013-12-04 | A little test I made when I was planning a short about a greedy little king, that I unfortunately (for some reason I can't recall) never went through with. At the time, I was pretty inspired by the graphic, stylized animation popularized by studios like UPA in the 50's, and was testing out stylistically how the short might look. Personally, I'm more satisfied with the actual animation of the king than anything else.

Orphans Benefit Comparison Michael Ruocco 2010-09-10 | Here's a side-by-side comparison of "Orphan's Benefit", a black-and-white ∂isney cartoon made in 1934 (left), and then remade in color 8 years later in 1941 (right).I don't understand why they did this. Why would they put so much time, money and effort into a remake when they could use that same energy on making something original? Was it because of the big Disney strike that happened a few months earlier? Were they planning a package feature of remade shorts which never fully came to fruition? If anybody has any information on the history of this, I'd love to know more. I apologize for the interlacing issues in the video. Hells Bells Michael Ruocco 2008-09-03 | Although the "Skeleton Dance" is considered by many to be one of (if not 'the') main highlight of Ub Iwerks' animation career, "Hell's Bells", to me, is just as equally amazing, animation-wise & music-wise. This cartoon was released in November 1929, only about three months after "The Skeleton Dance". This cartoon never fails to entertain & inspire me. The highlight to me is the dance cycle of the three devils around 2:40, it always makes my jaw drop.
