During my six-year stint as KEGL's program director, we did a lot of contests. But none of them quite had the impact of this one. We have away a new Porsche 944 every month for over a year. Listeners would tune in each morning to hear us reveal what the "key song" would be. Then, every time we played it throughout the day, the 97th caller on our request lines would win $97 in cash and a key. Then, once a month, all the key winners in that cycle would be invited to a location (usually a mall) where we'd give each of them a chance to draw a key from the bucket and try it in the ignition. One was always keyed to start the car. And invariably, whenever the winner started the car, they would freak out, realizing they'd just won a $30,000 automobile. (Big money in 1985.) This was the promo I produced recapping our first 8 winners and announcing that we would be giving away 3 more Porshes in the next three months.
