On a multi-model automotive assembly line, speed and accuracy are critical to ensure maximum line uptime. At Subaru of Indiana Automotive, associates run multiple vehicle models simultaneously, working with tooling that can differ by just a few millimeters between variants. The right tool has to be obvious. Subaru turned to color coding to simplify tool selection for its operators.

3D printed ABS provided color for low volume custom parts, but did not meet the durability that automotive manufacturing requires. On a factory floor where tools are picked up, set down, and reused hundreds of times a shift, Subaru needed a stronger solution.

Onyx GF provided the necessary strength and color coding ability, running within SIA's existing Markforged ecosystem for seamless integration. For a global manufacturer running multiple models at once, color-coded tooling is only effective if the tools themselves can withstand the rigors of the factory environment.
