We viewed a herd of elephants browsing on a small acacia tree they had recently toppled. The herd included a very large bull, estimated by our guide at 40 - 50 years old, the matriarch who controls the herd, and several other adults, juveniles along with a small baby elephant. It was interesting that the decision to leave the area was made by the matriarch not the bull. According to our guide, her job is to make the decisions while his job is to defend the herd.
This experience was part of The Great Southern African Safari organized by G Adventures working in partnership with National Geographic Expeditions.
