Details:
You may have seen that video I posted recently where I open my MIDI art in a spectrogram. I thought it looked pretty cool, and since then I've been wanting to create a piece of music that's specifically designed to be a spectrogram drawing. After a few days of work, these are the results!
The creation process was similar to MIDI art (I actually first composed it as a MIDI art piece), with a few key differences:
1. Since this is a visual representation of SOUND (and not just MIDI data) I didn't have to limit myself to a keyboard and I could use my voice (whistling, singing) and as many different sound layers as I wanted for the arrangement.
All sounds here are performed either with my voice, keyboards or Therevox.
2. In a MIDI piano roll, all you see is the separate note blocks, but in a Spectrogram you can see pitch bends so I tried to utilize vibrato and portamento to create curved details in the dragon.
3. The types of sounds I used were very important - they had to be fairly dark, with few harmonics (especially on the low end) because brighter sounds have many more harmonics that show up in the spectrogram and obscure the drawing. The biggest challenge here was finding sounds that worked (without limiting myself only to boring sine waves).
BTW, I know some artists have hidden images in their music before using tools that convert photos to frequencies, but those just sound like random noises and I wanted this to sound like music. In other words, I couldn't rely on any "tools" and I created this from scratch (just like my MIDI art) using my experience in composition, counterpoint and music theory - as well as a healthy dose of trial and error to get the desired shapes. :)
I'm putting this in my "Live MIDI Art" playlist even though it's not MIDI art. It's similar enough and I think people who like those vids will enjoy this too.

This album is inspired by the Gameboy games from my childhood whose music had a huge influence on me (such as Zelda, Castlevania, Mario, Battletoads, Metroid and many more). This is the final song on the album, I'll probably be taking a break from producing 8-bit music for a while and moving on to other things. Thanks for all your support over the last year as I was working on this project!

I created a shorter version of this arrangement last year (you might remember that video). Ever since then I've been planning to make a full version, and now that I'm working on a Chiptune album (to be released soon) I had the perfect reason to finally finish it. Hope you enjoy!
The take in this video is the very first I played after turning on the camera. It's not perfect, there are a few wrong notes here and there but I didn't feel like doing 10 more takes to try and get a perfect one (it's quite fatiguing and tricky to play on a mini-keyboard). You'll have to forgive me. :)
Composed by Frédéric Chopin.
Arranged and performed by Gil Assayas (GLASYS).
I also wanna add that my motivation for talking about this is not just the impact on my own work - I consider myself very lucky to have the following and support that I do. Rather, it's years of seeing many extremely talented artists get discouraged and lose hope in the current industry, my feelings on the current situation as a whole and my worries about the future of art.

The light-up MIDI controller is called LUMI and was sent to me by Roli (2 units for 4 octaves). Other controllers I use in this video are the Sequential Prophet XL, Yamaha CP88, Nord Stage 2EX and Korg microKEY-61.
My DAW is Cubase. I use a variety of plugins for the sounds - Spectrasonics Keyscape, Steinberg Retrologue, Plogue Chipsounds (to name a few).
All the MIDI art is recorded live, and I don't edit the MIDI in any way (no quantization, no velocity editing, nothing). Sometimes I add a backing track to give the art some groove and context when I feel it needs it.
If you wanna see my step-by-step process for creating these (from composition to performance) check out the tutorial vid linked above.

This one was hard! I know I say that quite often, but this one in particular was a real challenge to compose in a way that sounds musical and still be possible to play live. Some big chords and awkward hand stretches were involved. Hope you enjoy!

This video starts with an original MIDI art composition (like all my other videos in this style), performed on a LUMI keyboard and recorded live into the Cubase piano roll. The sound I'm playing is a simple triangle wave with vibrato that I programmed in Retrologue.
The video then transitions into an animation I created to accompany my new single release "Gargoyle".
I made the animation by drawing every frame separately in the piano roll and putting it all together in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.
This is my first ever attempt at actually animating MIDI art! Even though it's short, it was a lot of work so I hope you enjoy it. Make sure to check out the full song on streaming platforms and let me know what you think!

When the creator of these instruments (Mike Beauchamp) told me he was working on a new model, I knew I absolutely HAD to get it. The new model (ET-5.3, bottom instrument in this video) has been dramatically improved and is an absolute joy to play.
I thought it would be fun to document this point in time where I have two of these instruments. Playing both in tune at the same time was quite the challenge and took a few days of practice.

Technical details:
Normally, you control the volume of the Therevox using the intensity keys on the left hand side. However, for this performance I needed to play both instruments simultaneously so I set the oscillators to "hold" (play constantly) and used two expression pedals to control the synths instead (one pedal per synth). The pedals are actually routed to filter cutoff - when the filter is completely closed, there is no sound. Halfway through the piece, I tweak the sounds by bringing in the second oscillators on both Therevoxes and increasing filter resonance.
I didn't add any effects to the recording - the reverb is the Therevox's built in spring reverb. The only processing I did was some panning and minimal EQ.
Composed and performed live by Gil Assayas (GLASYS).

Always wanted to do a Star Wars themed MIDI art piece, hope you enjoy! I call this one "The X-Wing Prelude". This was quite challenging to compose in a way that sounds musical.
I know it doesn't really sound "Star Wars-ish", but the Star Wars sound is orchestral and those types of sounds didn't really work for this dense composition - so I went with piano.
Technical details: Recorded live into the Cubase piano roll using the Sequential Prophet XL as a MIDI controller. The VST I'm playing is Spectrasonics Keyscape.
Composed and performed by Gil Assayas (GLASYS).

My arrangement stays pretty true to the Metroid Prime version until the synth solo which is my own addition to the theme.
All sounds performed live simultaneously in one take (no pre-recorded material, sequences or overdubs). I use keyboard splits, layering, velocity, aftertouch, expression + sustain pedals and the modwheel + sliders to achieve this.
The patches were programmed with my Sequential Prophet XL (bottom keyboard) as well as several VSTs such as: Spectrasonics Omnisphere, various libraries from Spitfire, Steinberg Retrologue, NI Battery 4 and more. The top controller with mini keys is a Korg MicroKEY.
Composed by Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano.

This is the longest and most challenging piece of MIDI art I've created yet. On my last live stream, I received some requests for a DQ slime and started working on it. I later finished it off stream, but felt like it was too short for an entire video - so I decided to create the entire Dragon Quest logo as well!
The DQ logo is very difficult to compose in a way that sounds musical. It has angled, overlapping letters (similar to the Pokemon logo) as well as a 3D look (like the Minecraft logo). I've already done the aforementioned logos so I had experience dealing with those challenges separately, but not together. This one took EVERYTHING I've got, and required around 5 days of work. Hope you like it!
