Brooklands Museum Fly in 2022 at Mercedes-Benz World Andys Video 2022-10-22 | Brookland can trace its flying heritage back well over a hundred years and was Britain's (and posable Europe's) largest aircraft manufacturing centre. So although most people today associate its past with Motor Sport, its aviation past also deserves to be remembered and that is what the many fly-ins at Brooklands commemorate. This one on the 16th of October 2022 was the first in many years to be held on the site of the original 1951 Vickers built over a kilometre long runway. now sliced into two parts and adapted for vehicles use by Mercedes-Benz World. Andys Video 2022-08-23 | This third and last video taken of the former Phillips & Powis - later Miles Aircraft - factory at Woodley on 10th August 2022 shows notable areas inside the premises during the final stages of TMS' site closure. Their departure sadly brings to an end 83 years of continuous engineering activity in these buildings which made such an important contribution to both Woodley's history and to this country's aviation and automotive industriesACKNOWLEDGEMENTSOur grateful thanks to the management and staff of Thermal Management Solutions for allowing us to make this video record of these historic aviation buildings at this critical time'. HISTORICAL SUMMARY Phillips & Powis Aircraft (Reading) Ltd formed in 1928, opened Woodley Aerodrome and a flying school in 1929 and began aircraft design and manufacture on teaming up with F G and 'Blossom' Miles (Britain's first woman aircraft designer) in 1933. Initially specialising in wooden light aeroplanes and air racing machines, the firm achieved unprecedented success in the 1935 King's Cup Air Race. A leading producer of modern monoplane training aeroplanes for the RAF from 1936, the company's increasing success required almost continual factory expansion and a £2M Air Ministry order for an initial 500 Miles Masters in 1938 was the largest ever contract for a British training aircraft at the time. To prepare for mass production, besides expanding its production facilities and building a new HQ beside Headley Road East in 1939, P&P also introduced Britain's first 'Moving Track Assembly Line'. Renamed Miles Aircraft Ltd in 1943, the company already had a reputation for ambitious and innovative private-venture projects including the M.52 supersonic jet research aircraft (cancelled in 1946 by the government just before completion). By the time the business entered receivership in 1947-48, just over 6,000 Miles aircraft had been built at Woodley and another 1,115 at other factories - a remarkable achievement in just 14 years. Restructured as a general engineering company in 1948, it was progressively renamed Western Manufacturing Estate Ltd, Adamant & Western and then the Adwest Group. The latter gradually redeveloped and sold off most of the old airfield and factory for housing and other commercial uses before its remaining pre-war premises were taken over by Magal Engineering then by Arlington Automotive who recently sold the site to Goya Developments. Rear views of the former Phillips & Powis/Miles Aircraft Factory at Woodley Andys Video 2022-08-23 | This second of three videos was also filmed on 10th August 2022 and shows the two large industrial buildings at the rear of the site beside 'Viscount Way' and once opened directly onto the west end of the airfield. The first shed was 'Final Assembly' which housed the end of the factory's innovative Moving Track Assembly Line and still retains its original sliding doors through which numerous Miles Master and Martinet aircraft passed from 1939 to 1945. An adjacent smaller 'Wood Store' building was incorporated into this building after the war. The second larger building was the 'Dope Shop' which has lost its tall folding doors post-war but features typical 1930s 'north light' roofs. Newly-built aircraft were all painted here in individual spray booths created using mobile protective screens. They were then pushed outside briefly en route to an even larger adjacent 'Flight Shed' (unfortunately destroyed by fire when used as a warehouse in 1956). Bentley celebrates centenary of first ever race win at Brooklands Andys Video 2021-05-18 | 100 years to the day since the first race win for any Bentley, the actual winning car built known as EXP2 (experimental car number 2) returned once more to Brooklands to relive that famous moment and I was there to record this historic moment. Also present at the Brooklands Racetrack in Surrey were a number of other 3-Litre Bentleys to 'Wave the Flag' for British Racing excellent, especially with the Mercedes test track just yards away. This is an important part of the history of the Brooklands Banked Race Track as seen on TV programs like the Yesterdays Channels 'Secrets of a Transport Museum' and it is important that today's 'Bentley Boys' preserve these historic racing cars. Hayling island from above in 4K Andys Video 2021-03-10 | I received the email from BMFA to say that COVID restriction on flying had ended and so after months of only being able to fly from my Garden, I took my drone for a walk on Hayling Island's sandy beach and had a quick look around from the air. The BAE Systems Spares Logistics Centre At Brooklands 1990-2020 Andys Video 2021-02-08 | The huge BAE Systems Spares Logistics Centre at Brooklands recently closed myself and ‘aviation heritage consultant Julian Temple were allowed to visit and record the building as it is now. Julian has researched the building in depth and here is part of his findings.As a major manufacturing centre for most of the 20th century, Brooklands was Britain's most prolific location for aircraft design, production and testing with a total output of almost 19,000 aircraft of some 270 different types since 1907. Mass production of aeroplanes started here in 1915 with Vickers Aviation building BE2c military training aeroplanes as subcontractors to the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough. Ultimately over forty companies or individuals produced and tested aircraft here until 1970. Although some American aircraft factories produced more aircraft than Brooklands, nowhere else in Britain or Europe is believed to have a similar or greater claim to fame. Designed in the late 1980s when British Aerospace's last factory at Brooklands was closing down, a new 104,000 sq ft £15m 'Commercial Aircraft Spares Logistics Centre' officially opened in 1990, with former Production Control Manager, Mike Booth responsible for its completion. Brooklands was the chosen location with its proximity to London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports which usually handled parts needed urgently by overseas operators and 70% of those aircraft spares were destined for export, especially to the USA. Offering unprecedented customer service 24 hours a day, the new facility replaced nine existing stores in the UK and comprised three huge storage bays with a three-storey office area in the NE corner. It featured fully computerised automated handling systems in order to supply billions of pounds of urgently needed parts worldwide as quickly as possible and had 150 staff at its operational peak. The main airliner types supported were the BAC One-Eleven, BAe 146 and its later Avro RJ/RJX variants, BAe Jetstream 31 and 41, BAe 748 and its short-lived successors the Advanced Turbo-Prop (ATP) and the derivative Jetstream 61. Most of these were in airline service although some were operated by British and foreign armed forces. In late 1999 British Aerospace merged with GEC-Marconi to form BAE Systems. Unfortunately the major recession in commercial aviation after the devastating terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Centre on 11th September 2001 led to economies and redundancies at Brooklands. Later, the fully automated storage bay was closed as the high cost of upgrading its Swiss-made computer system could not be justified, but the majority of the warehouse carried on functioning normally. More recently, BAE Systems Regional Aircraft Ltd at Prestwick Airport in Scotland managed the Brooklands stores but, with fewer British airliners left in service and the original lease up for renewal at the end of 2020, the decision was taken to close the warehouse on 31st December. The BAE Systems Spares Logistics Centre's closure after 30 years of operational service therefore represents the end of Brooklands' important contribution to the origins and development of the British aerospace industry for more than 100 years.

New Zealand Holiday 2010 Our first trip to some parts of North Island (3 smaller videos joined) Andys Video 2021-02-04 | This was our first visit to New Zealand and we were there to visit English friends in Ngunguru who had recently emigrated and built a huge house on the peninsular they owned. First of all we did explore Auckland and went to see where the French Secret Service allegedly had blown up Green Peace's Rainbow Warrior. We explored the Bay of Islands and watched the huge number of Dolphins that chased the boat. It took me back to my youth when I would watch Jack Cousteau explore the area on a 'Black and White' TV and really started my interest in boats and the sea. I also recalled that versatile Minesweeper that became RV Calypso and the horror that finally befell this icon TV Star in later life. USA Holiday 2013 - Including LA, San Diego, MASH location, 10-4 Parade, Calico Ghost town Andys Video 2021-01-29 | A video for friends and family but also for Fans of MASH, Highway Patrol or anyone wanting some ideas where to go when visiting California. We go out onto the former MASH film set (not great video quality) and the we visit LA's City Hall and look down on the City. We explore a little of Malibu and meet up with Joe Spano, before taking part in the 10-4 Police Parade as guest of the organisers. We go out to visit the Hoover Dam so we can drive over the new bypass bridge, before driving out to Calico to explore a little of the Gold Rush town, before going to Dante's View to look down on Star War's Mos Eisley location. USA Holiday 1989 - Including LA, Tombstone, Old Tucson and the Titan Missile Museum Andys Video 2021-01-23 | One of my Videos for our family and friends showing our 1989 visit to California the Same day as the terrible San Francisco earthquake. This was the first time I had got to a place that I had wanted to visit since I had been a Teenager in the sixties spending long weekends in Cornwall. We landed in LA. but then drove down to San Diego. From there we went to Old Tucson and visited the High Chaparral film set along with other location used in films like Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, El Dorado and later Tombstone. We also went to the town of Tombstone to see the OK Corral and Boot Hill.Moving back into the Twentieth Century we stopped off Air Force facility Missile site number 8 and the popped into Edwards Airforce base (not allowed to film there). Then it was up to San Francisco arriving on Halloween Night we were surprised to see how hard the city's residence were trying to please what must have been some very traumatised children. Although it was now some two week since the earthquake you could still feel the tension and the huge amount of building damage. Then we drove back to LA and had fun playing on the fantastic beaches along the way. USA Holiday 1991 Exploring San Francisco from the air, visiting Alcatraz and Yosemite Andys Video 2021-01-19 | Yet another Holiday Video for the Family and friends. I also understand there is a grown group of people we don't know that like to see there places as they were a few years ago. Anyway this one starts with me at work and dreaming about California and soon we are there. We hire a plane and take a aerial drip around Frisco (long before I found out about Half Moon Bay) It had been 2 years since we had last visited at the time of the Earthquake and so we return to some of the damage locations to see how repairs were going (they were all long since done). We enjoy the wonderful Highway One before ending the holiday at Universal and Disney.
