Lifecasting Tutorial: Dress Form Cast In Flexible FoamBrick In The Yard Productions2024-10-18 | Lifecasting Tutorial: Dress Form Cast In Flexible FoamSilicone Creature Sculpt Part 1: Armatures & EyeformsBrick In The Yard Productions2024-10-09 | This is part one of my new series of videos of sculpting, molding, casting, and finishing a silicone creature. In part 1 I explain the use of eyeforms and a foam armature. I sculpted my little creature with Monster Clay. The eye forms were molded off the acrylic forms using TC-5110F silicone. I then cast up the eyeforms using fast setting TC-808.
It is October, which means it is time for some costume related fun! In the next few videos I will be covering the process of sculpting, molding, casting, and painting a little silicone creature. Many of you have asked about tutorials on silicone casting and painting, so here you go! I will be posting these new videos outside of my usual Monday schedule, so get ready to learn! This is a 2 part tutorial on how to make a simple brush-on mold of a Hydrocal Lifecast. In part 2 I explain how to make a simple 2 piece mother mold or support shell over a silicone mold. This is an easy way to mold and reproduce a lifecast or head bust. At the end I cast a hollow TC-808 resin cast.
This is a simple brush-on mold technique using a combination of TC-5130F and TC-5110F. I used soft, TC-5110F for the ears to allow for easier release, and firmer TC-5130F for the rest of the mold. Both are fast silicone formulas so this allows for a quick brush up mold. In part 1 I make the brush on silicone mold, thickening the two silicone formulas with SC-5001 thickening agent. in part 2 I make a simple support shell/mother mold using plaster bandages.
For the record, this mold took right about 5lbs of silicone, so about $65 working out of a 16lb kit.
These common mistakes lead to bubbles, warped parts, and oily parts that will not take paint.

If you missed part one, I will link it in the endscreen. In part 2 I cast a silicone positive from the TC-5130F mold I made in the first video using Zip 301 as a release to keep the silicone from sticking to the silicone mold. Both mold and cast silicone are platinum silicones. The resulting TC-5110F pattern is then put into a foam core box and a TC-808 resin mold is poured using Paste Wax and E236 to keep the liquid resin from sticking to the mold box. The finished TC-808 resin mold may be used to cast many accurate silicone parts using platinum silicone. The first mold, made in part 1, may be used to cast Polyurethane skin materials such as F-105. This process is a great way to make molds for reproducing tattoo practice skins and suture pads.

The end result of this process is 2 molds: one silicone and one resin. We used TC-5130F fast silicone to mold a Monster Clay pattern. The resulting TC-5130F mold is then used to cast a TC-5110F silicone part. Zip 301 Mold Release was used to keep the TC-5110F from sticking to the TC-5130F mold. In part 2 we use the TC-5110F silicone part to create a hard, TC-808 resin mold. The final mold can be used to produce silicone parts for medical simulators, tattoo practice skins, special effects skins, and other silicone skin applications.

Just to make this interesting, I cast silicone into silicone. The original mold was made with TC-5110F fast setting silicone. I cast the coffee cup in TC-5130F (also fast) silicone. To keep the two from sticking, I applied petroleum jelly to the inside of the coffee cup mold and then sprayed it with Zip 301 Mold Release. If done properly, the petroleum jelly will not obscure the detail in the mold. I apply the petroleum jelly heavily, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, and then wipe off the excess. I then spray the mold with Zip 301 mold release and allow the release dry/outgas. Once the mold is properly released, I am ready to pour my silicone.
This is a new formula that does exactly what the old formula did and then some so I decided to remake the mold. I used TC-5110F (Fast) to make the mold. TC-5110F is a platinum silicone that will accept a wide variety of casting materials. In a follow up video we will be showing different casting options.
Molding a ceramic pattern is tricky. Ceramic patterns can easily bond to silicone if not released properly. I used Zip 301 mold release to keep the silicone from bonding to the patterns cup.
If you need a better degassing setup than what I am using here, Centerpointe offers an industrial scale Vacuum cart. A vent system is sometimes necessary to minimize air bubbles in thin walled, cast resin parts. In this video I mold a thin knife blade to illustrate the use and function of vents. Vents can be very helpful when casting resins, rubber materials, and expanding foam. A silicone mold with proper vents will make casting bubble free parts much easier with or without pressure casting. I used low viscosity TC-5130 silicone for the mold and high strength TC-808 Jet Black for the cast. You can find links to the products below:
