Ultrasonic Cold Brew Coffee in Under 3 Minutes UNSW 2024-05-06 | Engineers from UNSW have now developed a new way to make cold brew coffee in under three minutes without sacrificing on the taste experience. The process developed by the UNSW team - led by Dr Francisco Trujillo - involves using an ultrasonic reactor to speed up the brew of the grounded coffee beans, with the research published in Ultrasonics Sonochemistry. Fans of cold brew coffee often rave about the smoother, less acidic and less bitter taste compared to a regular hot brew. Nuclear Materials | Patrick Burr UNSW 2024-05-06 | Nuclear fusion promises to provide humankind with abundant, carbon-free, reliable energy for millennia. But harnessing the power of the sun right here on earth is no easy feat. While scientists have managed to achieve fusion reactions, they’ve only lasted milliseconds and produced just enough energy to boil a kettle. The problem? The materials needed to withstand the extreme temperatures of the fusion process don’t exist. Patrick Burr is working to solve this problem by designing new materials that will not only enable sustained fusion reactions, but will help make the current generation of nuclear fission reactors more efficient. Understanding how the world around us is built on an atomic level, is the first step. In 10 minutes, Patrick will outline how much a difference the right materials could make, resulting in better utilisation of the incredible energy density of uranium, more nuclear power, and less nuclear waste. Patrick Burr Patrick Burr is an Associate Professor Faculty of Engineering at UNSW Sydney. The aim of his research is to discover the degradation mechanisms of materials used in energy applications, to aid the design of new materials with improved resilience to degradation processes. His focus is on nuclear materials (fusion and fission) as these are subject to the most extreme conditions and therefore pose the greatest challenge, but he continually transfer the knowledge to solar cells, solid electrolyte fuel cells, electrochemical capacitor and batteries.

Understanding Tourette Syndrome | Valsamma Eapen UNSW 2024-04-07 | Despite being first recognised over 200 years ago, it took until 1980 for Tourette Syndrome to make it into the diagnostic manual for mental disorders – and it's still widely misunderstood today. Only a third of people with Tourette’s experience the uncontrolled swearing so commonly associated with the condition. A range of lesser-known, complex symptoms and comorbidities mean Tourette's can be easily overlooked by parents, teachers and even health professionals. In 10 minutes, child and adolescent psychiatrist Valsamma Eapen will bust the many myths about this widely misunderstood condition. Learning to Love Tax | Ann Kayis-Kumar UNSW 2024-03-25 | Of all the dirty words, ‘tax’ is perhaps one the most widely misunderstood. No one likes to part with their hard-earned wages, but tax is key to addressing some of our biggest social and economic inequalities. It’s time to wrench our heads from the sand and start paying attention to tax policy. By better understanding where our tax dollars go, we can vote to improve taxation to create a fairer Australia – and maybe even learn to love it. Associate Professor Ann Kayis-Kumar is author of Taxing Multinationals (Oxford University Press, 2019). Ann's research conceptualises tax as a mechanism to achieve social justice across the taxpaying spectrum. She is the Founding Director of UNSW Tax and Business Advisory Clinic, an international award-winning platform for experiential work-integrated learning, innovative grassroots research and catalysing social impact across Australia. She has provided expert evidence to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Tax and Revenue, and consultancy advice on investigations by the Inspector-General of Taxation. Ann serves on industry-level committees including the ATO's Small Business and National Tax Clinic Stewardship Groups, the Law Council of Australia's Taxation Committee, and the Tax Institute’s NSW Technical and SME & Tax Practitioner Committees. She is also Vice President of the Australasian Tax Teachers Association, and former Deputy President of the UNSW Academic Board.

Platypus juvenile found in Royal National Park UNSW 2024-03-20 | 10 months after the reintroduction of platypuses to Royal National Park, a juvenile platypus has been found - confirming breeding has occurred within the new population introduced last year. The little platypus is in excellent condition, weighing 850g and is estimated to be about six months old. Her age aligns with the conclusion of the platypus breeding season and means she would have only just emerged from her burrow. The platypus will be named by the local Indigenous community.In May 2023, 10 platypuses were translocated from Southern NSW to Royal National Park - where they had previously been locally extinct for the last 50 years.
