Xiegu x6100, NJQRP Annual Skeeter Hunt - QRP Field of Dreams Ham Radio QRP - K0KLB 2025-08-21 | Its the 14th annual New Jersey QRP (NJQRP) Skeeter Hunt. This is my 3rd time participating and as always, it's a fun event. The Skeeter Hunt is an annual (4) hour sprint of both calling CQ and/or hunting.. I only use the SSB mode but there are many more CW operators who participate. SSB is allowed 10w max power and CW is 5w. I cold called (no spotting) CQ for the entire (4) hours using the allowed 10w SSB power and made 105 QSOs.My antenna was a home brew inverted V dipole (or some call it a doublet) fed with 450 ohm window (ladder) line. It worked very well on top of my 40ft Spider Beam mast. Two weeks ago when I performed a test run, it was tuned ready to go. But at the last minute I decided to cut, strip back and re-solder the (23ft) wire legs to the window line feed point to assure connection was in good condition. Thankfully I tested the SWR with the rig expert before I started the event. I didn't expect there to be that much movement in the dip, but there was. Luckily I was prepared with my home made window line extensions to extend the feed line and bring the dip back to the band.I used my Xiegu x6100 this year and it did a wonderful job. "To balun or Not to balun", that is the long standing question.. My rookie mind has a hard time visualizing what RF is being radiated via the metal bar (strap) from the coax shield over to the second hamstick, so I decided to go ahead and make a modification and install a 1:1 Balun at the top to balance feed each individual hamstick.. Xiegu x6100, AX1 Portable, WSPR test - 5w SSB Iowa Ham Radio QRP - K0KLB 2024-11-24 | We took the Xiegu x6100 for its first maiden voyage out portable with the Elecraft AX1 antenna. ** The only way to know if something works for you is to get out and experiment with it yourself ** I've heard good and "not so" good reports from folks who have used the AX1 "compromised" antenna. My results of the AX1 and x6100 combination are that they worked very well together. Granted, not as well as a DiPole or other wire antennas, but good enough to get on the air with a small station foot print, compact, easy to carry and set up. Next adventure will be a POTA activation and some HT walk abouts..All in all, we spent an hour videoing the process and making some calls.. It was a great day to be outside and spending time with the dog and a radio.. We tested it and made some nice contacts.. However, I wanted to bring it back out and see how it would perform on other bands across 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters.. The idea was to tune up, run a WSPR test to look at Propagation/Radiation direction and then try to make a contact.. Many folks ask me if that wire connection really helps or not ? .. I honestly don't know, but to a Rookie like me, it kind of made sense, right?.. The Idea came from Ray K6RBM as I was struggling with making calls using a Ham Stick on the roof of the car.. He suggested the use of the tailpipe to provide additional ground plane.. 1.5 Wave Dipole QRP SSB 1w - Iowa Ham Radio QRP - K0KLB 2023-11-10 | Hey.. I'm using a real antenna.. Imagine that, LOL... I know this is nothing new as we all know Dipoles are great antennas.. but, I'm not a big DiPole fan.. Main reason being, I find them hard to deploy in a portable environment.. However, This one was worth the time it took to set up.. It was actually pretty easy.. Just a spider beam, ladder line and 2 wires.. I enjoyed playing with it and thought I’d share the results of the adventure.. Thanks for watching.. 73Look for the WSPR test results of this antenna in the video.. Never done a Premiere before and have no idea what to do but thought I'd try it once just to see how it works.. thx for understanding.. k0klbA NOTE FROM LEON (KC1LBL): As a side note, I'd like to add that in my sketch of the design, the current nodes indicate intensity, not phase. In this design I made no attempt to make the three 1/2 wavelengths operate collinearly, which would require a different feeding technique. But as your successful experiment demonstrated so well, a 1+1/2 wavelength dipole does not have to be collinear. Although the theoretical pattern contains six lobes (three on each side of the wire) with notches in between, in the real world ground reflections fill in the notches thus providing good omnidirectional performance, as your WSPR test confirmed. The goal here is to put up a simple structure that has good radiation efficiency on 60 through 15 meters, and maybe beyond depending on your antenna tuner. It can even be tuned on 80, although there the radiation efficiency will be somewhat reduced.

In a situation where we don't have any trees or a fiberglass pole to launch the wire on, this works well for getting the wire above the ground 8 to 9 feet and make some calls. Pretty good early in the morning, but Signals dropped out and got weaker after 10am.. Could have been band conditions due to recent solar flares or the fact that I was using a antique tractor for an antenna? LOL.. Green rust may have had a 12db gain?.. Tailpipe and a Hamstick - POTA QRP SSB 1w - Iowa Ham Radio QRP - K0KLB 2023-05-13 | Performing Test's with the Shark Hamstick.. I just wanted to see how the hamstick, mag mounted to the roof of the car (without any radials) would perform for those situations where I want to keep my set up simple, quick and with a small footprint.Over a period of 2 evenings (May 9 & 10, 2023), the first night we had no response to my 1 watt CQ calls.. The second evening I returned to the park and made one change by installing a wire between the mag mount base to the tailpipe of the car and tried it again.. The results were much better. While we have been in the midst of some Solar Storms and less than ideal band conditions, we still made a few contacts..
