Q: What does the ocean mean to you?
A: "Oceans are a resource to be treasured. All living creatures rely on the oceans for a variety of reasons and it is important to understand their impact on our daily life. They are however, more than what meets the eye. Much of our oceans are left unexplored and there are worlds to still discover. It is my hope that “An Ocean's Bounty: Inhale, Exhale, Discover” brings these topics to light."

This Earth Day, One World One Ocean is giving the ocean the attention it deserves with a special video collection of ocean photographs from our online community. Here is the ocean through their eyes. Happy Earth Day!
Megan Cook, 2012's Rolex Underwater Scholar, has spent the last year traveling the world, experiencing the ocean in every way imaginable. Feeding sharks and swimming with sea lions are just a few of the ways she broadened her horizons this year in an effort to pass along her excitement and knowledge about the ocean to people worldwide. "If we could get everyone on this planet to identify as an ocean advocate, the world would be a vastly better place." With such a breadth experience under her belt in just a year, Megan is an ocean hero to keep an eye on.

Today's episode is all about humpback whales!
---
Humpback whales have become famous for their long, complex, and haunting songs. All humpbacks are able to vocalize (for example, grunting). However, not all of them sing these elaborate melodies. Which ones sing? And why? Watch to find out!
---
The singing whales all have their own versions of the same tune; each season there is a new "hit single" that spreads between different humpback populations. The patterns in their songs are remarkably similar to human music.
---
Humpback whales make long migrations every year between the poles and the tropics. The cold water of the Arctic and Antarctic is rich in nutrients and a perfect place to feed on plankton, krill, and small fish in the summer. In winter, they escape the cold by visiting the tropics; there is little food for them there but the warm, clear waters are ideal for mating and calving.

Chilean seabass (Dissostichus eleginoides) are found in the Southern Ocean off of Chile, Argentina, South Africa, and New Zealand south of 40 degrees latitude, in the cold deep water up to about 2500m (8200ft).
Like many red-listed fish, they are slow to grow and reproduce. They mature around 6-12 years of age, though females grow faster and larger than males. It is thought that they can live to 50 years old. At full size, they can be 2m (6.5ft) long and 100 kg (220 lbs) -- and very ugly!
