Mike Mangini is a Grammy-winner, a brilliant teacher (who I studied with at the Berklee College of Music) and is best known as the drummer with Dream Theater since 2010. Mike's first two Rhythm Knowledge books had a massive impact on me (I read them in high school), so it's an honor to be involved in this third book. Rhythm Knowledge Volume 3 contains the most important exercises I've practiced over the last 10 years.

I've been learning to play Touch Guitar for the past year under Markus Reuter's instruction. It's been an incredible journey and here's what I learned!
ABOUT MARKUS Markus teaches remote 1-on-1 lessons for any & all "touch" instruments (Chapman Stick, Warr Guitar, Touch Guitar, etc.) and two-handed tapping technique for standard guitar as well. You can reach him here: info@markusreuter.com
ABOUT TOUCH GUITARS This video is more about the journey and learning process than the instrument, but in case you're curious: The Touch Guitar is an 8-string guitar, tuned in 5ths, and played with a tapping or 'touch' technique. Range is that of a 5-string bass, plus standard guitar. Scale length is 34" (bigger than guitar, smaller than bass). It's more similar to a traditional guitar than a Chapman Stick, in terms of sound, tuning/string layout, and single output (though they have many customizable options).
You can learn more about the Touch Guitar in my previous videos, or on their website: touchguitars.comMEINL Cymbals Unboxing & DemoShawn Crowder2021-12-08 | So stoked to join the MEINL artist roster! Been playing them for forever and LOVE these cymbals. Links below! (Sweetwater affiliate links)

A deep-dive into the rhythms of Dream Theater's new single, "The Alien". This song is loaded with time signature changes, odd meters, polyrhythms and some insane drumming from Mike Mangini. Protect you ears, while you can! Hearing damage is permanent and accelerated by long-term exposure to loud noises (like drums). In conjunction with National Save Your Hearing Day on May 31st, I went to get my hearing tested, and speak about my favorite solutions for hearing protection.
Thanks to EarPeace for their support. I've been loving their musician's earplugs for the last 6 months. They're running a sale for National Save Your Hearing Day (until 11:59 pm EST on May 31st, 2021). Use discount code MDW30 to get 30% off orders of $50 and above. It's valid for all items, excluding Last Call items that are already significantly discounted. I'd personally recommend a pair of the Music Pro earplugs (I use 16 dB reduction) and a set of interchangeable filters (16, 19 and 25 dB).

Is it possible to play 2 time signatures at once? Yeah, kind of. In this video we'll look at some musical examples, and break down Sungazer's song 'Ostinato'.
Can you hear two time signatures at once? Can you perceive multiple rhythms simultaneously? Or are we just hearing it all as a single "super-rhythm"? The answer affects the way we approach performing polyrhythms, polymeters, and multiple rhythms at the same time.

What are the costs and benefits of open-handed playing? Ambidexterity? Switching sides? Should a left-handed drummer learn to play on a right-handed drum set? We explore all of this and more in this video follow-up to my 30-day left-handed drumming experiment.
I spent the last 30 days playing a left-handed drum set. I'm a righty, but decided to challenge myself by strengthening my "weak" side. This was one of my most fun experiments to date!

How does one best develop solid rhythm and timing? Counting out loud is the most powerful practice tool at our disposal. Counting does wonders for our timing, precision, and consistency. Frank Zappa's "Black Page #1" is known for being difficult to play. But is it? If so, why? I decided to learn it to find out.
Here I document the process of learning "The Black Page" on the drums, from start to finish. I spent one week learning this piece before recording the final performance at the end of the video.
The drums are unedited and the MIDI backing track is 100% quantized. It's not easy to line everything up, but with practice, you can do it!
PS - For those interested in learning these types of rhythms, I highly recommend Mike Mangini's "Rhythm Knowledge" books. Volume 2, in particular, has a plethora of exercises pertaining to tuplets and counting that have helped me out tremendously over the years.
