Seagulls in Feeding Frenzy in Bay of Colwyn Bernard Wellings 2014-10-14 | In early October 2014 the seagulls (herring gulls) were diving into the sea off Rhos-on-Sea. This is unusual for seagulls, although common for terns, gannets and other seabirds. The previous week there had a been a big mackerel run at the same location, and the initial thoughts were that the gulls were feeding on the white bait or indeed the mackerel. But I thought this could not be the case as the target was static. I took my camera down to the low tide mark to check it out and discovered they were feeding on starfish. The seagulls would swim in shallow water before plunge-diving to the larder below. They must have eaten several thousand star-fish over the course of the few days when the water levels were just right. Llandudno Ultra Marathon Race - Commonwealth Championships -Wales 2011 Bernard Wellings 2011-09-23 | Llandudno Commonwealth ultra marathon championships took place on Gloddaeth Street Llandudno 23 - 24 September 2011. A dedicated number of supporters encouraged the runners throughout the day and night, and the Llandudno town mayor and a few local dignitaries turned up. About 50 runners set off at a steady pace, and they are expected to run between 120 and 130 miles in the 24 hours, but I noticed a few runners started walking after the first lap, approximately a 1/4 of a mile. Hmm! When I left the front runners were from New Zealand, Canada, Wales and Australia. Athletes run a looped course for 24 hrs and the winner is he or she who runs the furthest. The winner was England's Lizzy Hawker (25), who finished the Gloddaeth Street course two laps ahead of second placed John Pares from Buckley, Flintshire. John won the gold medal and the title for Wales. Lizzy set a world best performance for a woman, also breaking the British and Commonwealth 100 mile (161km) record and became the world record holder. LLANFAIRFECHAN WALK TEMPLE OF DOOM PROJECT Bernard Wellings 2011-08-24 | The expedition to find the Welsh Stonehenge, or the Temple of the Druids, set off in terrible conditions. It did not bode well with Bryn Dinas Hillfort dark and barren looming over the valley. A wraith like figure screetches from the mist covered hilltop. But we take no heed and trudge onward ...although feeling we were being watched. Yes, strange inhabitants looked out from the vegetation but I ignored Brian and Bill and kept to the trail. The mist came rolling down the hills from all directions and we had to move on. The sounds from the Roman Road added to the sense of foreboding, was that the sound of Roman Legions marching through the moors? At one point we abandoned Brian but thought better of it and returned to his aid. We were rewarded for our good behaviour and the gods led us to Wales' own Stonehenge, or was it the Temple of the Druid's... The short walk offers the opportunity to continue through open meadowland to the famous Swallow Falls, or just to play on the banks of the beautiful River LLugwy. Views From North Wales Coastal Cycle Path - Angel Bay Bernard Wellings 2011-08-15 | Find more info at http://www.walesdirectory.co.uk/tourist-attractions/Mountains/Wales10000.htm . A five minute detour from the North Wales Cycle Track leads to the Rhiwledyn Nature Reserve and Angel Bay on the huge limestone headland of the Little Orme. Known as Porth Dyniewaid on the OS map - locals always call it Angel Bay. Its a great place to have a picnic - enjoy the sea views and the abundance of seabirds, there is a continual stream of cormorants passing by the headland. Dolphins, porpoises and seals are often to be found at Angel Bay, but unfortunately never when I have my camera at the ready! It is a bit of a scramble down to the small beach but it is pleasant to simply sit on the headland and enjoy the views. Or take your fishing rod and try your hand at fishing off the rocks.

Those pesky seagulls are at it again. Although this time they aren't pinching ice creams and bags of chips from holidaymakers at the seaside. No, in this video the seagulls are enjoying a healthier diet albeit pre-packed fast food. Yes the seagulls in North Wales, Old Colwyn to be precise, make a meal of the abundant supply of mussels that wash ashore after rough weather. The only problem they have is opening the packaging, which could be tricky if you dont have any hands. But our Welsh seagulls have it cracked, literally. Taking the RAF as their model they load up with their cargo on the beach, gain some height and then its "bombs gone" and the missiles, sorry mussels crash to the floor and split open revealing a tasty morsel of fresh sea food. All well and good with the seagulls doing what comes naturally, unfortunately it does have the side effect of creating a "bomb alley" of this section of the North Wales Cycle Path in Old Colwyn. I haven't actually been hit by one of the bombs as yet but at times I have had to dodge them, and cyclists would be well advised to miss the sharp pointed shells if they dont want to puncture their trip to the seaside.

North Wales Cycle Path at Pensarn and Llanddulas Bernard Wellings 2011-08-12 | The North Wales Cycle Path between Pensarn and Llanddulas is a lovely section of the route. Once you have passed the Pensarn section with amusements and tea rooms there is a pleasant ride through to the beach at Llanddulas. It is a good tarmac surface for cycling and is nice and flat. The beach with its ancient wooden breakwaters invites you to leave your bike and take a stroll along the wide stretches of sand.
Aber Falls Waterfall Bernard Wellings 2011-08-09 | It is just a short walk from the village of Aber, Abergwyngregyn, to a fine viewpoint of one of Wales' most beautiful waterfalls and the surrounding hills of Moel Wnion, Gyrn, Bera Mawr, Bera Bach, and Drosgl. The falls themselves are a most impressive site, and indeed a most impressive sound, but I've not seen a photograph yet that does them justice. You would be forgiven for believing that the milky white water was just that .....milk. And I am surprised that they have not been named Rhaeadr-Llefrith, Milk Falls, as the contrast between the granite rock face and the aerated water looks nothing less than if a milk tanker was spewing it's load over the cliff edge.
