Running Up That Hill Cover | Kate Bush | Hounds of Love | Stranger Things

Stephanie Forryan 2022-06-16 | This cover of Kate Bush's 1985 hit "Running Up That Hill" from the album "Hounds of Love" was inspired by Max's favorite song in episode 4 ("Dear Billy") of the Netflix series "Stranger Things". Sadie Sink (who plays Maxine Mayfield) did an amazing job portraying this character's inner journey and confrontation with Vecna/Henry/One, which inspired this emotional take on the original song.

It makes me so happy to see Kate Bush experience the revival of a beautifully crafted song like this one! It's gone No. 1 in Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden and Austria, No. 2 in the UK, and reached the top ten in the US. Kate Bush even talked about it on her website, saying:
"You might’ve heard that the first part of the fantastic, gripping new series of 'Stranger Things’ has recently been released on Netflix. It features the song, ‘Running Up That Hill’ which is being given a whole new lease of life by the young fans who love the show - I love it too! Because of this, Running Up That Hill is charting around the world and has entered the UK chart at No. 8. It’s all really exciting! Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song. I wait with bated breath for the rest of the series in July."

Stephanie sings Demons by Guster | Testing a Vintage AKG D19C Microphone

Stephanie Forryan 2022-04-14 | Today I got to play with a vintage microphone: the infamous AKG D19C (also known as the "Beatles mic")! So I took it for a test run with an old favorite song of mine: "Demons" by Guster.

One of the musicians I coach was kind enough to lend me this microphone so I could see what it sounds like (many thanks!). I'll be sharing my full thoughts in a review, but what I'll say here is that different microphones often teach me about different facets of my voice and production capabilities. So if you have the opportunity to borrow gear from friends or colleagues, use it!

There were many highlights and small joys in 2020, despite all the hurdles and disappointments the year held. This moment was one of those bright spots. One day in the height of summer, I got a message from Thomas, who invited me to an evening video session in Berlin. I took him up on his offer. Within 15 hours, I had written and recorded this song, all sparked by his message and the lovely filming experience he set up.

I woke up that morning and sat on a balcony overlooking the capital city, sipping coffee and listening to the sounds of the neighbourhood waking up. It was several months into the pandemic and I was just beginning to realise the extent of my losses and how many more blows were likely yet to come. As always when I am struggling with any emotion, my guitar, a pen, and paper became the key to letting it all go.

I thought about my years in Berlin, the spirit of the once-divided city, and the times we were all living through as I picked up my guitar. My fingers quietly began searching for patterns that resonated with my mood. I began to hum as the sun started to press its way through the clouds, and my pen began to scratch words into my notebook. This is the song that came together there, during this pandemic, in the heart of a city that managed to put itself back together after being ripped apart.

That evening I sat on the banks of the Spree River and watched the Berlin Cathedral become a silhouette as the sun set. I saw people with masked faces meander by, their smiling eyes and muffled laughter showing a hundred different happy moments. The air was warm, the lights of the city rose to greet the darkening sky, and I met Thomas.

As we set up our equipment, we talked about the times, our lives, and our art; it was such an easy moment of connection - one that probably never would have happened if this virus hadn’t thrown our lives into disarray. A new friendship, a new song, a new beginning, all opportunities that popped to the surface when the world turned upside-down. And, thanks to Thomas’ talent, we were able to capture that moment and share it with you now.

Watching this reminds me of the thousands of small joys that I had this year, and that if a whole city can rebuild itself after being blown apart, I will be able to put all of my shattered plans back together when this is all over. They will be different, but they will be beautiful.

Here’s to 2020 - a year of hard lessons and small joys. And here’s to all the wonderful potential that 2021 holds. Happy New Year!

When I Was A Boy | One-Woman Band

Stephanie Forryan 2020-06-25 | This has always been one of my favorite songs by Dar Williams because it approaches a complex topic with such sweetness and humanity. Gender equality, socialization, and sexism are complex matters that affect us all. And they are issues that need to be approached with compassion and empathy. The song "When I Was A Boy" does just that with a disarming tenderness.

So when Philipp Stroh approached me to be on the "Mean Stream Show with Phillipp Stroh" and talk about "the female experience", this song popped into my head after years of lying dormant. I feel like I could have written the first verse myself - Peter Pan was my childhood hero and I spent my free time practicing to be a Lost Boy by climbing every tree I could find. I was fearless and fierce. I still am in some ways, but I often rely on a "nice man to walk me home" to stay safe nowadays. Something "Lost Boy me" would never have believed she would need.
And the twist of the last verse is a gentle reminder that we all lose when we encourage people to live according to stereotypes. So I thought I would also publish my cover of this Dar Williams song as a one-woman band performance. I hope you like it.

The most popular version of this song is probably American blues singer, guitarist and songwriter Bonnie Raitt's version from her album, "Luck of the Draw."

This song has always had a special place in my heart and I I was inspired to cover it now. Because even in these days of turmoil and pandemic, when my country is divided and burning, when people are crying "I can't breathe", and there is so much pain, loss, injustice and uncertainty, life continues to go on in the background - including the everyday heartbreaks. So the music must continue too.

As a side note: it has been brought to my attention that I look like I am wearing a funny hat in this video... that was not intended to be a fashion statement. Update: I've received a lot of questions about the effect I'm using on my voice. It's not an effect - that's a vocal technique. It's the first time I ever tried it, and it will probably be the last because it is HARD to sing that way for a whole song! 🤣 But it was fun to try it once. Kudos to Tiny Tim for singing like that on the regular.

Stephanie Forryan 2020-03-27 | Welcome to this parody of Mr. Sandman by my temporary crisis band: Stephanie and the Quarantines! The world seems like a very strange place nowadays. I don't leave the house very much since we're all under orders to shelter in place. So when I DO go out, it's bizarrely empty out there - it's eerie and strange. And EVERY time I leave the house, for some reason, the song "Mr. Sandman" always starts playing in my earbuds. And every single time, I think "Wow, this is great elevator music for the apocalypse". And THAT is why we decided to do this song today.

Just like many of my colleagues, my gigs have been cancelled and I've lost work for the next several months. That's rough, but it also has an up-side: We finally have time to collaborate! So today, I had a virtual jam session with Axel Kowollik from Germany and Bruce Davidson from England! We each recorded our own parts in our separate studios and I spliced us all together (it may have been the most hygienic recording session of all time). We made a parody of the Chordettes song "Mr. Sandman" from their 1954 release.
