The Lady Bird Diaries Post Screening Conversation

TheLBJLibrary 2023-10-13 | Oct 3, 2023 - Friends of the LBJ Library were invited to join us for an advance screening of the new Hulu film The Lady Bird Diaries, largely based on the incredible audio diaries the First Lady kept beginning in 1963, shortly after the Kennedy assassination, through the end of the presidency in 1969. The film premiered at SXSW in March 2023 and will debut on Hulu this fall. After the screening, the film’s director Dawn Porter and producer Kim Reynolds joined Abby Johnston, editorial director of The 19th*, for a discussion.

Participants featured Ben Barnes, former Texas Lieutenant Governor and LBJ protégé, and Luci Baines Johnson, the president's daughter.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States, died in 1973 and is buried at the LBJ Ranch, near his birthplace in Stonewall, Texas.

About the speakers:

Susan Ford Bales is the daughter of President Gerald R. Ford and Betty Ford. Susan was raised in Alexandria, Virginia and attended Holton Arms School and the University of Kansas, where she studied photojournalism. She is the author of two novels set in the White House, Double Exposure: A First Daughter Mystery, and its sequel, Sharp Focus.

During her high school years, Susan lived in the White House and served as official White House hostess following her mother’s surgery for breast cancer in 1974. In 1984, she and her mother helped launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Susan subsequently served as national spokesperson for breast cancer awareness. Since the founding of the Betty Ford Center in 1982, Susan worked side by side with her mother on projects at the Center and was elected to the Center’s Board of Directors in 1992. She succeeded her mother as Chairman of the Board from 2005 – 2010, and currently serves on the board of directors of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

Susan has served as a Trustee of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation since 1981 and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Foundation’s programs committee. Susan’s work with the Foundation centers on promoting the ideals of integrity, courage, and candor that were the hallmarks of her father and his distinguished service as a naval officer in World War II, member of Congress, and as vice president and president.

Richard Hyde is His Majesty’s Consul General in Houston and has been in this role since June 2019. As Consul General, he has overall responsibility for leading the UK’s engagement in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. His business priorities and responsibilities include developing political ties between the UK and the consular district; enhancing trade and investment partnerships; promoting science and innovation links and supporting the delivery of consular services to the many British nationals who have made this region their home.

As a career diplomat, Richard has served in a range of diplomatic and commercial positions around the world, including as Director, Caribbean and Central America at the Department for International Trade, based in Caracas, Venezuela and later San Jose, Costa Rica; Head, Advanced Manufacturing Investment team at UK Trade and Investment in London; British Deputy High Commissioner (Consul General) Hyderabad, India; and British Deputy High Commissioner (Consul General) Bangalore, India.

Pablo Marentes González has served as Consul General for Mexico in Austin since 2019. Formerly he was a Professor in the Political and Social Sciences Department at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and former consul general in New York and San Francisco.

Adriana Cruz serves as the Executive Director of the Economic Development and Tourism (EDT) division within the Office of the Governor. Cruz joined EDT with a robust background in economic development and business, having most recently served as the President of the Greater San Marcos Partnership.

William Inboden is Executive Director and William Powers, Jr. Chair at the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas-Austin. He also serves as Associate Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, Distinguished Scholar at the Strauss Center for International Security and Law, and Editor-in-Chief of the Texas National Security Review. Previously he served as Senior Director for Strategic Planning on the NSC at the White House. Inboden also worked at the Department of State as a Member of the Policy Planning Staff and a Special Advisor in the Office of International Religious Freedom, and as a Congressional staff member in both the US House and Senate. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and member of the CIA Historical Advisory Panel and State Department Historical Advisory Council. Inboden's recent book, The Peacemaker: Ronald Reagan in the White House and the World, published November 2022, is an in-depth account of how Reagan's foreign policy won the Cold War and laid the foundations for the 21st century.

Elizabeth R. Varon is Langbourne M. Williams Professor of American History at the University of Virginia and a member of the executive council of UVA's John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History. Varon grew up in northern Virginia. She received her PhD from Yale, and has held teaching positions at Wellesley College and Temple University. A specialist in the Civil War era and 19th-century South, Varon is the author of We Mean to be Counted: White Women and Politics in Antebellum Virginia (1998); Southern Lady, Yankee Spy: The True Story of Elizabeth Van Lew, A Union Agent in the Heart of the Confederacy (2003), Disunion!: The Coming of the American Civil War, 1789-1859 (2008) and Appomattox: Victory, Defeat and Freedom at the End of the Civil War (2013). Southern Lady, Yankee Spy won three book awards and was named one of the “Five Best” books on the “Civil War away from the battlefield” in the Wall Street Journal. Appomattox won the 2014 Library of Virginia Literary Award for Nonfiction and was named one of National Public Radio’s “Six Civil War Books to Read Now.” Varon’s public presentations include book talks at the Lincoln Bicentennial in Springfield; and at Gettysburg’s Civil War Institute; and on C-Span’s Book TV. About Ivan Schwartz:

Ivan Schwartz is the founder and director of StudioEIS. He is a sculptor, painter, and designer, with a keen interest in American history and the use of sculpture in the development of our national symbols.

With a degree in sculpture from the College of Fine Arts at Boston University, he was the recipient of a distinguished alumni award from Boston University in 2003 and has shown his work in New York since 1981. Ivan was a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts until the end of 2009 and was a founding board member of Art Omi, an international arts workshop. He was also President of Innovators in America, 2009-2011, working closely with Sir Harold Evans and Sarah Frank. Ivan’s visual memoir, Scratching the Surface, was published in 2021.

About the speaker:

Avril Haines was sworn in as the Director of National Intelligence on January 21, 2021. She is the seventh Senate-confirmed DNI in our nation’s history and the first woman to lead the U.S. Intelligence Community.

DNI Haines has deep national security experience. During the Obama administration, she served as Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor from 2015-2017, during which time she led the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee. From 2013-2015, Haines was the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. She was the first woman to hold both of these positions. She initially joined the federal government as a civil servant and over the last two decades has worked in all three branches of government, in and outside of the intelligence community, and in academia as a research scholar at Columbia University and a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

DNI Haines most recently led the Transition’s National Security and Foreign Policy Team and served as a member of the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service.

DNI Haines received her bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Chicago and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Charlie Laderman is a senior lecturer in international history at the War Studies Department at King’s College, London, and a visiting research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. His first book, Sharing the Burden: The Armenian Question, Humanitarian Intervention, and Anglo-American Visions of Global Order (Oxford University Press, 2019), was awarded the 2021 H. Wayne Morgan Prize for the best book on the political history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He is the co-author, with Brendan Simms, of Hitler’s American Gamble: Pearl Harbor and Germany’s March to Global War (Basic Books, 2021).

Peter Baker is the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, a political analyst for MSNBC, and the author of several books on the presidency, including Days of Fire and The Breach. Susan Glasser is a staff writer for The New Yorker and a CNN global affairs analyst. Their first assignment as a married couple was as Moscow bureau chiefs for The Washington Post, after which they wrote Kremlin Rising. They also co-authored The Man Who Ran Washington, a New York Times bestseller.

The Divider is, at least for the moment, the definitive account of the Trump presidency. Sweeping across four years of nearly constant crisis and controversy, the book examines one of America's most enigmatic presidencies, which included two impeachments, dramatic international events, a constantly shifting array of advisers, and the insurrection of January 6, 2021.

This conversation took place on December 13, 2022, at the LBJ Presidential Library.

About Doris Kearns Goodwin:

Doris Kearns Goodwin is a renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times #1 best-selling author. She is best known as a preeminent public intellectual, presidential historian, and biographer frequently seen on television putting today’s news into historical context.

Her first book, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, became a national bestseller and achieved critical acclaim. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. Her bestselling book The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys was adapted into an award-winning five-part television miniseries. The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Golden Age of Journalism was awarded the Carnegie Medal.

About Don Carleton:

Don Carleton is the executive director of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History and J. R. Parten Chair in the Archives of American History at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of twelve books, including The Governor and the Colonel: A Dual Biography of William P. Hobby and Oveta Culp Hobby, Red Scare, A Breed So Rare, and Conversations with Cronkite. He is also the executive producer of two PBS documentaries: When I Rise (2010) and Cactus Jack: Lone Star on Capitol Hill (2016). In 2015, the Texas Democracy Foundation honored him with its Bernard Rapoport Award.

Grover Cleveland hardly ranks among the most celebrated or accomplished of American presidents. Like Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and other presidents of the late 19th century, Cleveland held office at a time when Congress dominated national political life and few Americans expected much of their chief executive. And yet closer inspection reveals a most remarkable president -- and not only because he is the only one to hold two non-consecutive terms.

Troy Senik is a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush and a co-founder of the digital media company Kite & Key. Troy is also author of A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbably Presidency of Grover Cleveland (September 2022).

The nine justices are unelected, serve for life, and, until 1981, were all men. But their actions have helped define the American way of life for more than two centuries.

Join us for a talk about significant recent decisions, a historical view of the court and term limits, the power of the court, and what we anticipate this term.

About the speakers:

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is a Professor of Constitutional Law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). She teaches classes in Constitutional Law, Race and the Law, Evidence, and Gender and Justice. She is a civil rights attorney who litigated cases for Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama, Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc. Professor Browne-Marshall is a legal commentator who covers the United States Supreme Court and major cases. She has given commentary on Supreme Court decisions, impeachments of Donald Trump, police-involved civilian deaths, criminal law, racial justice, and constitutional questions on media such as CNN, NPR, BBC, MSNBC, CBS, WVON as well as newspapers nationwide. Professor Browne-Marshall is a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Professor Leah Litman teaches and writes on constitutional law, federal courts, and federal sentencing. Her research examines unidentified and implicit values that are used to structure the legal system, the federal courts, and the legal profession. Litman’s recent work has appeared or will appear in the California Law Review, Michigan Law Review, Virginia Law Review, Texas Law Review, Duke Law Journal, and Northwestern Law Review, among other journals. Her writing for popular audiences has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and Slate; she also is a regular contributor to the Take Care blog. She is one of the co-hosts and creators of Strict Scrutiny, a podcast about the U.S. Supreme Court, and a co-creator, with Emily Prifogle, of Women Also Know Law, a tool to promote the work of women and non-binary academics.

Stephen I. Vladeck holds the Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law and is a nationally recognized expert on the federal courts, constitutional law, national security law, and military justice. Professor Vladeck has argued over a dozen cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Texas Supreme Court, and various lower federal civilian and military courts; has testified before numerous congressional committees and Executive Branch agencies and commissions; has served as an expert witness both in U.S. state and federal courts and in foreign tribunals; and has received numerous awards for his influential and widely cited legal scholarship, his prolific popular writing, his teaching, and his service to the legal profession. Vladeck is the co-host of the National Security Law Podcast, CNN’s Supreme Court analyst, and a co-author of Aspen Publishers’ leading national security law and counterterrorism law casebooks. He is currently writing a book on the rise of the Supreme Court's "shadow docket," to be published in May 2023.

Paul Gregory is an expert on Russia and is currently a research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. A pioneer in the study of Soviet and Russian economics, his textbook on the Russian economy was used to teach more than two generations of students. But Gregory’s latest book is on a subject that he has been reluctant to address for nearly six decades: his relationship with Lee Harvey Oswald and his young wife Marina. Gregory was one of the few people who actually knew them. His inside account of the Oswalds’s marriage offers a disturbing portrait of Lee Harvey Oswald, whom Gregory believes acted alone in the assassination of President Kennedy.

We talked to Gregory about the Lee Harvey Oswald he came to know, someone who possessed the motive, cunning, and killer instinct of a murderer who was desperately vying for a place in history.

In a time of unprecedented challenges to women’s rights and equality, it has never been more urgent that their voices be heard.

The program was presented by the LBJ Foundation, All In Together and The 19th News.

The evening included:

Women and the State of American Democracy: a broad-ranging discussion about the state of women in American democracy. How does a democracy change when women are more fully engaged? What are the issues that women most care about, and where is the U.S. relative to nations abroad in the full participation of women in electoral politics?

The Women of Afghanistan —and the World: a conversation exploring how a once burgeoning democracy has changed since the Taliban regained control of the government, relegating women to a subjugated state. How has Afghanistan society changed? And what nations across the world stand as beacons for what is possible for women in democracy?
