davidman001 Why is Japan obsessed with this Manga about food? And furthermore, why aren’t we obsessed with it too? In this video, I aim to answer the burning questions anime fans have been craving the answers to for years—is what I’d like to say, but unfortunately Oishinbo is a relic of Japan’s mainstream only, lost to the sea of obscure anime titles in western spaces. Which is a shame, because Oishinbo is really awesome. So awesome, in fact, that I went out of my way to research, script, and produce this entire 50 minute long video. I hope this encourages more people in the western community to check this series out.

The Forgotten Magical Girl From Space

davidman001 2025-03-17 | Only recently has the 2001 anime 'Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san' been uncovered from the massive pile of obscure/un-translated anime to western audiences. But what many may not realize is how massive the history behind this seemingly unassuming magical girl anime is. Spanning 34 years, starting way back in 1967, the ‘Comet-san’ franchise has undergone a plethora of different adaptations; 2 live-action TV-shows, a manga tie-in, crossover episodes with Ultraman characters, and an early 2000s adaptation sat directly within arguably the most innovative and exciting era for the Mahou Shoujo genre.

Because I immediately got some questions regarding spoilers, I want to preface that the "big" spoilers are all saved for the ending (which I have marked as a chapter). However, before this section, I do discuss plot specific moments as examples to illustrate my points. These aren't detrimental to the experience of Comet-san and the overarching plot, but if you wish to go in completely blind then that's for you to decide.

How Mr. Gimmicks OST Surpassed the NES

davidman001 2023-07-05 | Gimmick, developed by Sunsoft, originally released on the Famicom in 1992 and later for the PAL Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, under the name 'Mr. Gimmick'. Gimmick's music is well known for utilising a dedicated sound chip called Sunsoft 5b which allowed further musical capabilities for the composer Masashi Kageyama. But is the 5b the only reason why Gimmick's soundtrack is so great, or is there more to it than that? Find out in this video!
