As part of US Air Force investigations, Joseph William Kittinger II, a tough, wiry pilot (nicknamed “Little Joe” because of his short stature), with a shock of orange hair and an engaging smile, made the highest, longest, fastest sky dive in history. His record, finally broken in 2012, stood for more than half a century.
