As part of our On the Record series, we nabbed pop singer JoJo to talk about the album that had the biggest impact on her. She said D’Angelo’s Voodoo “blew my mind. It was so rich in songwriting and musicality, subject matter -- it just changed me.”
If you’ve been wondering what JoJo’s been up to lately, you’re not alone. The singer first dipped her toes into the entertainment pool with children’s TV shows like “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” and “America’s Most Talented Kids.” She went on to grab the attention of pop fans when she was a mere 13 years old with “Leave (Get Out)” -- the song catapulted her to the top of the charts and she became the youngest single artist to have ever charted a No. 1 single. A couple more hits followed, but then JoJo seemed to vanish right before our eyes.
As she spent time weighing whether she should go to college or pursue music, a lot of her time was also spent battling with her label. Eventually able to extricate herself from her contract, JoJo, now 24, has signed with Atlantic Records and is set to release III, also dubbed “Tringle” (she’s releasing three singles from the album at once).
