On February 20, 1962, John Glenn's shuttle launched out of Cape Canaveral, FL into outer space where he not only became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth, but continued to do so circling the planet three more times during that flight. Aboard NASA's Friendship 7 shuttle, Glenn travels through space for 4 hours and 56 minutes before beginning his decent through the earth's atmosphere.
