Anja Community Reserve, Madagascar wildlife Dieuws wildlife 2020-02-27 | The Anja Community Reserve is a woodland area and freshwater lake, situated at the base a large cliff. Much of the reserve is dominated by fallen rocks and boulders and there are two small caves providing habitat for bats and owls. This reserve has much sheltered habitat in the pocket of forest that has established between the vast boulders.The reserve was created in 2001 with the support on the UNDP to help preserve the local environment and wildlife, and to provide additional employment and income to the local community.The reserve is home to the highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs, in all of Madagascar. The people, who have a belief in not eating the them, used to sell the them to outsiders. Loggerhead turtle Dieuws wildlife 2020-10-30 | SAD STORYGreece is one of the few places in Europe where you can find loggerhead turtles nesting.Unfortunately more and more nesting beaches are illegally used by bars for tourists.They use machines to clean and flatten the beaches and nesting sites so that tourists can walk easily and they can built there beach-bars. Which makes it harder for the turtles to find a quiet place to lay their eggs, and hard for the youngsters to hatch and walk to the sea.If you want to help the turtles in Greece please donate to ARCHELON @archelon_greece , a organisation that protects nesting locations on the Peloponnese beaches and does important research.
Spider wasp greece Dieuws wildlife 2020-10-30 | Although this spider looks dead laying on his back, in fact it has been paralyzed by this Spider Wasp.The wasp itself is an nectar-feeding insect. So why paralyze the spider? their larvae feed on them!These wasps are solitary wasps. Females searches the ground and vegetation for a spider, and upon finding one, stings it, paralyzing the spider.Once the spider is paralyzed, the female makes a burrow or flies/drags the spider to a previously made burrow. And puts the spider in there. Normally a single egg is laid the spider, and the burrow is closed so the larva can develop without disruption. All this time the spider is awake but paralyzed. And slowly eaten alive.
Glass lizard Dieuws wildlife 2020-10-30 | A real dragon in Europe! That's what I thought when I saw my first Sheltopusik ever! They are also called European legless lizards because, as the name suggests, it is a lizard with no legs!They can reach a length of 135 cm! And I thought this one was massive with his (yes, we saw his hemipenis) length of 60 cm.This footage looks a bit grainy unfortunately. This is because I filmed this just before sunset with only the natural light, so I used a high ISO, and the fact that Instagram makes your footage worse when uploading.
nose horned viper Dieuws wildlife 2020-10-30 | Vipera ammodytes, also known as Horned Viper, Long-nosed Viper, Nose-horned Viper or Sand Viper, is found throughout southern Europe and parts of the Middle East.It is reputed to be the most dangerous of the European vipers due to its large size, long fangs (up to 13 mm) and high venom toxicity.The specific name, ammodytes, is derived from the Greek words ammos, meaning "sand", and dutes, meaning "burrower" or "diver", despite its preference for rocky habitats.We found this viper in a eucalyptus forest on the Peloponnese peninsular in Greece.And her tail is one of the most yellow colored tails I ever saw on a Vipera ammodytes.HOWLING FROM JACKALS I FILMED THERE.

Although introduced, this species has established his own breeding population on the Peloponnese.African chameleon in Greece!I knew that we had a chameleon species in Europe. But that we had two different species I did not know before I went to Greece.
cat snake Dieuws wildlife 2020-10-30 | his is an European cat snake (Telescopus fallax).They get their name from the cat-like eyes with vertical pupils.The European cat snake is venomous, but because it is rear-fanged (fangs are located at the back of the upper jaw), it rarely injects its venom in defensive biting, and is therefore considered no threat to humans. It feeds mainly on geckos and lizards.Cat snakes love to climb walls to find geckos at night. So that is exactly where we looked to find this individual.
Thunder Timelaps, lightning luck Dieuws wildlife 2020-09-10 | UNEXPECTED LUCK! 🔽background story🔽When driving from one location to the next, we stopped aside the road to save a Marginated Tortoise! from being killed by traffic. Looking at the view and the approaching weather, I decided to make a timelaps of the rainclouds rolling in.After about 20 minutes filming it started to thunder. But busy with the timelaps, I could not switch to slowmotion to film the lightning.So when I watched a lightning bolt hit the water perfectly, I was frustrated I did not switch from timelaps to slowmotion.Watching back every frame of my timelaps, there was one frame where the lightning bolt perfectly hit the water.Traveling lightweight as a cinematographer can be extremely frustrating. Especially because nothing happens most of the time or everything happens at once. And than you wished you brought your extra cameragear.
turkish gecko Dieuws wildlife 2020-09-03 | Planning a sequence in my head🔽background story🔽When thinking of filming geckos one of the shots in that sequence is trying to film them while they're cleaning their eyes with their tongue. Sometimes you can film this behaviour within seconds and sometimes you have to wait for more than 45 minutes!The first night out in de field, we searched for a variety of animals. This Turkish gecko was one of the animals we found. So I had my sequence in my head. I really loved filming this individual, because she was very relaxed and easy! Unfortunately, she was so relaxed that waiting for her to clean her eyes took a bit too long for me.After 30 minutes of waiting and filming from different angles, she finally started licking, her nose to be precise... She stopped after a split second! I finally lost my patience. So next time hopefully more luck.
Wiggling Spaghetti à la snake! Dieuws wildlife 2020-08-25 | I was amazed when I encounterd this freshwater crab ( Potamon sp. ) eating a living Grass snake ( Natrix natrix ).The crab was chewing his way from the tip of the tail to the head. He was already past the cloaca of this snake meaning that he is already busy eating organs like bowls and vital bloodvessels.I was travelling with two herpers and we knew immidiately that we were watching something extraordinary. After some research, I could not find a record of a Natrix being eaten by a freshwater crab in Europe.

Net-casting spider, Deinopis, 4K, Madagascar Dieuws wildlife 2020-03-15 | Instead of building a net to hang it, this species of spider build a net to cast away capturing it’s pray. They first spin a small upright rectangular cribellate web. This is then detached from its supporting threads and held horizontally above the ground by the spider's long front two pairs of legs while the spider hangs almost vertically. Passing prey is then captured by dropping the "net" over it (wiki). A crazy looking frog which uses his mossy look to camouflage itself at daytime. I love taking close-ups of special features of animals. helmet vanga, Madagascar, gh5, 4k, bird watching Dieuws wildlife 2020-03-05 | Running through the jungle with all my gear on my back, I was thinking about how amazing it would be if I would encounter one of the most amazing birds of Madagascar.That morning we set out in search for this icon among the birds. And while our guides were on the search off the trails we where asked to stay put and wait. Otherwise we would scare the bird away. After waiting for what seemed to be half a day, one of the guides came running out of the jungle on his flip-flops and told us to follow him. So the chase began and after running, stumbling and getting stuck with my tripod we finally were in the middle of a group of Helmet Vanga’s. A few adults were there with their offspring just chilling and doing their own thing while I was huffing and puffing trying to get my camera in the best position between all the lianas and plants. And suddenly there it was! I filmed this species onsite while other males where singing for there territory.I wanted to not only film the whole frog but also zoom in on some of the amazing detailed colors.It was a hell of a job to get steady footage from these little beauties.They are like ADHD frogs so active and jumping around.But in the end I managed to get a few detailed shots.Some background information about this species:In fact there are 15 poison frogs on Madagascar. I watched this Water-rat (endemic to Australia) killing, washing and eating a poisonous Cane toad ( introduced species to Australia). Luckily he knew what to do with this amphibian.Cane toads are a big problem in Australia. They are native to South and Central America, but has been introduced to Northern Australia.The cane toad has poison glands, and the tadpoles are highly toxic to most animals if ingested. Yasuni NP butterflies, Ecuador Dieuws wildlife 2017-11-16 | SLOW-MOTION butterfliesI still can look at this shots for minutes, just mesmerized by all the movements, colors and sizes. It was mind-blowing! What do you feel while watching this video? Naming butterfly species is appreciated to!On our way to the research center PUCE in Yasuni NP it became clear that there were a lot of butterflies here. We drove for almost 2 hours through butterfly-clouds before arriving at the center. And there, on a open field with mud, butterflies gathered to get the minerals from the mud. It is a great way to film animals that are a bit camera shy. I set this camera up every night for a view years already but never where lucky enough to film endangered animals.
